Flying Lotus, (born Steven Ellison) is an experimental multi-genre music producer, disc jockey, and laptop musician from Winnetka, California. His debut album, 1983, was released on Plug Research Records in 2006. He is most famous (yet also uncredited) for much of the bumper music on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block, and he has also contributed remixes for fellow Plug Research artists, including Mia Doi Todd. His great-aunt is the late Alice Coltrane. He is affectionately referred to as FlyLo by fans and critics.

M.A.S.K. (Making Art Sound Kool) was the first official release from the Waco, Texas trio, Strange Fruit Project, in over 3 years. After a few months they released the acappellas & instrumentals for all the producers and DJ’s of the world. Brazil took notice.
Laudz, an up & coming producer representing Curitiba, Brazil, was inspired to add his touch to the group’s release. The remix EP showcases his knack for infectious melodies and larger than life production. There is no doubt Laudz took these acappellas and made them his own.
As a member of the Elementality family, Laudz has produced tracks for artists like Silent Knight, MadKem & M. Josephine as part of DJ K.O.’s Living Out A State of Mind EP series.

Chris Alfaro is Free the Robots. The genre-defying artist pulls together heavy doses of traditional jazz, psych, electronic and hip-hop, with progressive melodies and devastating drums into a rich pot of sound. His techniques create harmony between genres with the blending of obscure samples with analog and digital compositions.
Initially started as a side project by Chris Alfaro in 2003, Free The Robots has quickly garnered a worldwide audience. Combining dusty swap-meet samples, futuristic synthesizers and live instrumentation, Free The Robots has created a unique harmony of past sounds and future ruminations. Much like his L.A. contemporaries Flying Lotus and Nosaj Thing, Free The Robots knows no genre boundaries.
Ctrl Alt Delete, which also features Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta, has been a long time coming. Originally signed to Alpha Pup over two years ago, Free The Robots has put his heart and soul into this album. Meticulously constructed, the album is a culmination of countless late nights at Low End Theory Club, combined with a spirit of fearless experimentation. Now, after thirty long and tormented years, this legendary album is finally going to be released on the Pieranunzi Series launched by EGEA Records. Soft Journey was written by Enrico after the confirmation that he would have recorded soon this album with Chet, then came Brown Cat Dance , a hard bop blues tune. Chet’s pairs with the great pianist for an album of mostly original tunes. The absence of standards, along with some great arrangements, gives the CD a fresh, breezy feel. Here, Enrico introduces Chet to Night Bird , a somewhat unusual minor blues that will become a regular until his last days. Baker sings on an odd Animali Diurni , a chance to shine as the magnificent jazz singer he was. Chet Baker once again reinvents “My Funny Valentine” by playing muted trumpet, something he rarely did for that song. They rehearsed the repertory for several days and then recorded it. But in those days jazz market distribution mechanisms were very rudimentary and so, despite its highly favourable critical reception, this album remained an obscure find for true enthusiasts only. Now, after thirty long and tormented years, EGEA Records, in the year of the 20th anniversary of Chet s death, releases this album which according to both critics and musicians is the most memorable of Chet s late career. Recorded in Rome on December 4, 1979 and January 4, 1980.

John Klemmer – Blowin’ Gold

A great session from John Klemmer — a real giant on the tenor, with a sound that long deserves to be revived! Klemmer’s blowing here on straight tenor and with some electronic effects on the horn — and he’s working with a hip Chicago soul jazz combo that includes Phil Upchurch on bass, Morris Jennings on drums, Pete Cosey on guitar, and Richard Thompson on piano and organ. The cuts are all pretty straight for Klemmer — and have that wonderful mix of styles that you’d find in the Cadet studios of the late 60s, with bits of rock, soul, and funk working their way into the mix. Titles include “Excursion #2″, “My Heart Sings”, “Third Stone From The Sun”, “Free Soul”, and “Children Of The Earth Flames”.

Enrico Rava – Italian Ballads

On this CD, the lyrical trumpeter Enrico Rava performs themes from Fellini movies, operas and classical music, along with three originals by band members. Despite its title, not all of the selections are taken at slower tempos, but there is an emphasis on memorable and haunting melodies. The results, which do not quite fit in as avant-garde or world music, are certainly jazz. Rava, guitarists Domenico Carliri and Roberto Cecchetto, and guest Richard Galliano on accordion get some individual improvisations, generally remaining within the mood of each piece while stretching its boundaries a bit. Barbara Casini’s occasional vocals in Italian are a strong asset, and she comes across much closer to a bossa nova singer than to an opera star. Definitely an intriguing set.

This 1963 session was Henderson’s debut as a leader, and it introduced a strikingly individualistic tenor saxophonist, with a distinctively muscular sound and approach, as well as a talent for finding a personal route through the dominant tenor styles of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. At the time of the session, Henderson worked regularly in a quintet with the veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham, and the two enjoyed a special chemistry apparent on several Blue Note recordings under their individual names. One unusual facet is the hard-bop take on the then emerging bossa nova, apparent in the first recording of Dorham’s now standard “Blue Bossa,” on which Henderson’s thoughtful construction is apparent, and the saxophonist’s own coiling Latin tune, “Recorda Me.” Pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Butch Warren, and drummer Pete LaRoca provide more than solid support for a date that’s as often reflective as it is forceful.

The Detroit Experiment – The Detroit Experiment

In this talent-packed project, a varied cast of Detroit players were thrown into a studio for a few days to see what would happen. Produced by techno pioneer Carl Craig, the lineup includes jazz heavies (reedist Bennie Maupin, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, pianist Geri Allen, and violin sensation Regina Carter), Motown session players (guitarist Percy Hughes and drummer Ron Otis), and various hip-hop and electronic people. The result is a tidy musical package crammed with rich ambient textures, percolating rhythms (stellar percussionist Francisco Mora sees to that), and strong grooves that still leave enough room for the jazz folk to solo comfortably. The master-teacher was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He is one third of Sa-Ra Creative Partners. Shafiq has an impressive resume. He has produced for a vast array of artists from Ice-T, Body Count, Lord Finesse, D.X.T., Afrika Bambaataa, Prince, Duran Duran, J5, Erykah Badu and Bilal. His depth in this music is uncomparable. From Cleveland to the South Bronx to Los Angeles, he makes a dent everywhere he goes. This mix sees him on fire at the house. Lots of different musics as you would expect from a Mochilla mix cut, and pasted together the way Shafiq does. From disco to post-punk to psychedelic to old school hiphop and that’s the first five minutes. Try to listen without getting up from the seat you are sittin in.

My new instrumental EP is out now so I figured you and your readers would enjoy it especially since I’m giving it away for free. These 5 tracks are all original Hip Hop compositions influenced by European Jazz and Electronic composers of the late 60’s, early 70’s and early 90’s. Because I’m more known for my sound design and sampling skills, I wanted to demonstrate a bit of my compositional range as a multi-instrumentalist who plays the drums, bass, guitar and keyboards. This EP is pretty much a precursor of what is yet to come from me musically as a fully self-contained Composer/Producer.

Rob Swift, one of the more innovative (and ultimately celebrated) turntablists of the past decade, has waited four years to release The Architect, his first album since gaining national attention with Mike Patton in the band Peeping Tom. The Jackson Heights, Queens, native has been working on incorporating classical music into hip-hop, and odds are he won’t do it in a way that’s particularly similar to how it’s been done (read: uncreatively) in recent major-label hip-hop singles. The Architect will be Swift’s first album since 2005’s War Games (though his earlier albums havehad several re-releases since then), and it will be Swift’s first release on Patton’s Ipecac Records, which, for an interesting juxtaposition, released the Melvins’ Chickenswitch right before The Architect.
