Milt Jackson – Olinga

Originally out on the CTI label, this set features vibraphonist Milt Jackson with some of his favorite musicians (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Mickey Roker, and Jimmy Heath on tenor and soprano) along with an occasional string section. The performances are pretty straight-ahead for CTI, with Bags and company performing the ballad “Lost April,” Dizzy Gillespie’s “Olinga,” a Walton original, and three recent songs by Jackson. Although Cedar Walton does not sound as formidable on electric piano as on acoustic and the other solos overall are a bit safe, this is a nice album.

Hubert Laws (born November 10, 1939) is an American flutist with a 30-year career in jazz, classical, and other music genres. Laws is one of the few classical artists who has also mastered jazz, pop, and rhythm-and-blues genres, moving effortlessly from one repertory to another. In June 2010, he received a NEA Jazz Masters lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Ann Peebles (born April 27, 1947) is a singer and songwriter, best known for her Memphis soul albums of the 1970s on the Hi Records label. Two of her better known songs are “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” and “I Can’t Stand the Rain”, popularised by cover versions by Paul Young and Eruption respectively. “I Can’t Stand the Rain” was written by her husband, Don Bryant, former radio broadcaster, Bernard “Bernie” Miller, and Peebles.
Peebles was discovered as a talent by Gene “Bowlegs” Miller of Hi Records during a 1968 trip to sit in singing with him at a Memphis, Tennessee, nightclub. A popular local bandleader, Miller was known for also helping other musicians, such as members of the Hi Rhythm Section, get their start in the Memphis music industry. Peebles soon began penning and singing hits for the label, co-writing with label staff songwriter Don Bryant, whom she later married in 1974. Peebles released a number of commercially successful and critically well received albums produced by Willie Mitchell on Hi Records throughout the 1970s, until the rise of disco music in the late 1970s took her music out of the limelight. Hi Records was sold in 1977, but Peebles reunited with Willie Mitchell in 1989 to produce her comeback album, Call Me.
In 2006 she released the album Brand New Classics, which consisted of re-recordings of some of her songs in an acoustic style.

Giorgio Gaslini – Multipli

Giorgio Gaslini is an Italian jazz pianist and composer.
He began performing at 13 and recorded with his jazz trio at 16. In the 1950s and 1960s Gaslini performed with his own quartet. He was the first Italian musician mentioned as a “new talent” in the Down Beat poll and the first Italian officially invited to a jazz festival in the USA (New Orleans 1976-77). He collaborated with leading American soloists, such as Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, Eddie Gomez, Max Roach, but also with the Argentinian Gato Barbieri and Frenchman Jean-Luc Ponty. He has also adapted the compositions of Albert Ayler and Sun Ra for solo piano, which the Soul Note label has issued. He also composed the soundtrack of Michelangelo Antonioni’s La notte (The Night, 1961).
From 1991 to 1995 Gaslini composed works for Carlo Actis Dato renowned Italian Instabile Orchestra. As to contemporary music, he composed symphonic works, operas and ballets represented at the Scala Theatre in Milan and other Italian theatres, in addition to music for the stage and about 20 film scores. He has been deemed a godfather of hardcore improvised music in Italy and has been the first holder of jazz courses at the Santa Cecilia Academy of Music in Rome (1972-73).

Freddie Hubbard – Open Sesame

Open Sesame is the debut album by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard released on the Blue Note label in 1960. It features performances by Hubbard, Tina Brooks, McCoy Tyner, Sam Jones and Clifford Jarvis. Open Sesame is not only a very good CD: it dramatizes history in the making. The trumpeter was not unknown then, but he was still in his early years; so was pianist McCoy Tyner, for whom a momentous association with John Coltrane was just around the corner. Indeed, the best-known musician at the time of this recording was bassist Sam Jones, and while he went on to bigger things with Cannonball Adderley and then Oscar Peterson, it was Hubbard and Tyner who would emerge as unambiguously major figures. That by rights should also have characterized tenorist Tina Brooks, but this superb player (his work on “But Beautiful” here is exquisite) never got the recognition he deserved, dying almost forgotten in 1974 at the age of 42.

Kankick is a hip-hop producer from Oxnard, CA. The Kankick sound is dusty, crunchy and blunted, and just the right tempo to get the proper head nod going. He started out in the science of hip-hop beat making in 1988, as a freshman in high school when he hooked up with Madlib who was a sophomore at the time. Live From The MPC 60 serves as a good starting point for fans of Ayatollah’s soulful production who haven’t explored his instrumental output. With 66 tracks totaling over 150 minutes of music, Live is the definitive Ayatollah instrumental collection, a dream come true for beat junkies. While most producers have swtiched to a computer-based setup, Tollah continues to churn out head-nodding concoctions on his vintage Akai MPC 60, saving each beat on an old-school floppy disc. Though he’s been perfecting his craft for over 15 years, Tollah doesn’t feel like his work is done. “I want to give more to the world,” he explains. “I’ve been sitting on a lot of material. I wanted to get it out at all costs.”

Gene Harris – Astral Signal

A masterpiece from Gene Harris an album that’s probably been his biggest influence on the sound of soul in the 21st Century, and for good reason too! The set moves way beyond both Harris’ acoustic piano roots in the Three Sounds, and his other electric sides of the 70s into sublime spacey territory that’s wrapped up in soul – as much a pinnacle of his musical vision as early 70s records were for Herbie Hancock or George Duke! The vibe here is a bit between the looser styles of Duke’s MPS recordings, and the tighter grooves of the Mizell generation and arrangements are by Harris, Harvey Mason, and Jerry Peters, the latter of whom really adds some great elements to the record.

Hank Mobley – Roll Call

During his tenure with Miles Davis, Hank Mobley made four Blue Note albums with band mates Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers, the most celebrated being Soul Station with Art Blakey on drums. For Roll Call, recorded nine months later, Mobley assembled the same magnificent rhythm section and added Freddie Hubbard on trumpet. The result rivals its more well known predecessor in swing, soul and incredible solos. The gospely “A Baptist Beat,” heard here in two takes, has become a favorite among club DJs and acid jazz fans.

Lester Bowie – African Children

Trumpet, fluegelhorn, kelphorn, vocals, percussion, composer, born 11 October 1941 in Frederick, Maryland. Met future wife Fontella Bass in an R&B band after military service. Worked in St. Louis and later moved to Chicago in 1966 where he formed Art Ensemble of Chicago with Roscoe Mitchell. Brilliant trumpet player who had a flair for the theatrical side in concert. African Children is a double LP by Lester Bowie recorded for the Italian Horo label and released in 1978. It features performances by Bowie, Arthur Blythe, Amina Claudine Myers, Malachi Favors, and Phillip Wilson.
