Ben Lamdin’s creations range from heavy funk, to hip-hop based beats mixed with dusty old jazz, obscuro funk and psych bits and pieces.
Nostalgia 77 aka Ben Lamdin first burst onto the scene with his heavy, new funk based sound in 2002. In 2004 he moved away from the distinctive raw funk of his previous singles and he branched out to explore a more downtempo and jazz infused style. Nostalgia’s sound moved to hip-hop based beats fused with dusty old jazz; obscuro funk and psych bits and pieces, repolishing and rearranging them for modern day headphone junkies.
The success of this composition lead Ben to a style he describes as “a combination of soul and jazz composition with computer based production techniques”. Coming from producing hip hop style beats he had always heard snippets of jazz tracks he loved, so the fuller musical expression of actually making his own jazz music was inevitable.
His cover version of Seven Nation Army with Alice Russell has also helped bring his “Jazz Jihad” mission to a wider audience!
Aiming for an edgy sound whilst continuing to search for a more personal expression, Nostalgia 77’s influences include free and spiritual jazz as well as 60’s funk and soul and Afro sounds.

José James – Blackmagic

Born in Minneapolis, MN, José was exposed at an early age to the Chicago and Detroit-based Black Arts and AACM musical performance culture by performance poet Louis Alemayehu, pianist and composer Carei Thomas, multi-instrumentalist Douglas Ewart, and saxophonist Donald Washington. This led to deeper explorations of the music of John and Alice Coltrane, Leon Thomas, and Betty Carter, as well as the soulful blues of Joe Williams and Marvin Gaye. Connecting this to the contemporary writing and jazz/soul samples of A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, the Pharcyde, and Ice Cube, José began writing his own lyrics to solos by John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, and Miles Davis.
Upon relocating to New York City José studied at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music Vocal Program under the guidance of Junior Mance, Chico Hamilton, and Janet Lawson, expanding his conception into the original compositions that became his highly-acclaimed 2008 debut album, “The Dreamer” – voted 21 Best Jazz Album of 2008 in JazzTimes Magazine Critics Poll.
As a recording artist and guest vocalist José has worked with Junior Mance, Chico Hamilton, Gilles Peterson, Bassment Jaxx, Nicola Conte, Toshio Matsuura, Elan Mehler, The Heritage Orchestra, SOIL & “PIMP” SESSIONS, Jazzanova, Flying Lotus, Christian McBride, J.A.M., Robert Mitchell, Jazzy Sport and Simbad.

The year was 2003. J Dilla and Madlib had just wrapped up their album Champion Sound, recording as Jaylib, with Dilla then still in Detroit and Madlib doing all his work from his bomb shelter studio in Los Angeles. J Rocc – who would later become the third member of Jaylib, on the turntables for each of the shows the guys did together – put together this mixtape of Dilla, Madlib and Jaylib songs, as well as some of their sources, essentially telling the story of this group.
We had some promo copies of this CD floating around for a while that year, then took the Jaylib section and pressed it on a 45, which was released as the bonus 45 with Champion Sound. Both the CD and 45 are long out of stock.
The photos were taken by B+ of Madlib in his studio in L.A. and Dilla in his in Detroit, and also came up with the concept for this packaging: a cutout photo sleeve with a second sleeve inside, juxtaposing the photos of Madlib and Dilla.

Paul Huston, better known by the stage name Prince Paul, is an American disc jockey and hip-hop record producer.
Beginning his career as a DJ for Stetsasonic, rapper and producer Prince Paul has lent his skills to albums by Boogie Down Productions, Gravediggaz, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, and 3rd Bass, among others. Paul’s big break came when he produced De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising album. Shattering the acknowledged rules of hip-hop production, he sampled not only funk, but all types of music to create fresh and original backing tracks. By throwing in comedy sketches as well, Prince Paul and De La Soul completely ushered in a new era for hip-hop. In 1994, Paul returned to rapping, joining RZA and Stetsasonic member Frukwan in Gravediggaz, a side project that debuted with 6 Feet Deep. He also began working with the new elite in underground rap, recruiting the Automator, New Kingdom’s Scott Harding, and Spectre for his debut solo album, 1997′s Psychoanalysis: What Is It? A Prince Among Thieves followed in 1999, and later that year Paul formed Handsome Boy Modeling School with the Automator to release the album So…How’s Your Girl?. His own Politics of the Business, another concept album that was more bitter than biting, surfaced in 2003 (a year after a second Handsome Boy Modeling School album), and was followed by 2005′s Itstrumental, as well as the archival compilation Hip Hop Gold Dust.

Curtis Cross, (born August 14, 1983) better known as Black Milk, is a hip hop producer and MC from Detroit, Michigan.
In 2004, he formed B.R. Gunna, with Young RJ, and Fat Ray, and together they released Dirty District: Vol. 2, a follow up to a compilation released in 2001 by Slum Village, which he had contributed production to. Black Milk released a solo album, Sound of the City, Vol. 1, the following year and in 2006 he signed a record contract with Fat Beats Records (Fat Beats is currently distributed by Koch Entertainment, the largest independent distributor in the U.S.). In the fall of 2006, he released an EP, entitled Broken Wax. March 13, 2007 he released a second album, Popular Demand.[1]
In addition to Slum Village, Black Milk has worked with the likes of J Dilla, Elzhi, Phat Kat, Frank-N-Dank, Lloyd Banks, Canibus, and Pharoahe Monch, and handled most of the production on T3′s Olio mixtape of 2006.
In the Winter of 2007/2008 Black Milk paired with Aftermath recording artist Bishop Lamont to release a mixtape entitled Caltroit, which was nominated for Best Hip Hop Mixtape at Justo’s Mixtape Awards.
Black Milk released an album with Fat Ray entitled The Set Up on March 4, 2008 and his third official solo release “Tronic” on October 28, 2008. He also handled the majority of production on Elzhi’s album The Preface, released August 12.
Elzhi’s “The Leftovers Unmixedtape” was released on December 11, 2009. Black Milk produced four of the tracks on it.
On December 25, 2009, he has leaked the first single from his forthcoming album Album Of The Year, the song is called “Keep Going”.
