Bullion – Say Goodbye To What/Crazy Over You
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Electronic

After Bullion’s ‘Young Heartache EP’ ushered in the dreamy days of summer, the young producer returns with a mind-bending brace of wistful songs for winter: ‘Say Goodbye To What’ is hook-laden psychedelic funk, a pop song laced with intricacies and a beautifully skewed production approach. It may well be the strangest singalong track of the year. Flipside ‘Crazy Over You’ is a melancholic headnodder, drifting through the speakers with a lovelorn grace while pummelling you with the bottom end. The life of the romantic is not always an easy one.

Jneiro Jarel – Android Love Mayhem
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Electronic

Jneiro Jarel (Dr. Who Dat?) presents the genre re-defining Android Love Mayhem from his newly-launched Label Who imprint, distributed by Alpha Pup. With more monikers than Kool Keith, his collaborations and producer credits are almost too many to mention. Highlights include works with Khujo Goodie (as Willie Isz), DOOM, TV on the Radio, and many more. Often being described as “experimental” and “psychedelic,” Jarel simply calls his ever-changing, abstract approach “the viberian experience,” where various musical styles and influences have beautifully coalesced to become something all it’s own.

Robert Glasper Albums!
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, Discography, Jazz
Hailing from Houston, TX, pianist Robert Glasper is a jazz pianist with a knack for mellow, harmonically complex compositions that also reveal a subtle hip-hop influence. Inspired to play piano by his mother, a gospel pianist and vocalist, Glasper attended Houston’s High School for the Performing Arts. After graduation Glasper studied music at the New School University in Manhattan, where he found performance work with such luminaries as bassist Christian McBride, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and others. Since graduating college, Glasper has worked with a variety of artists, including trumpeter Roy Hargrove, vocalist Carly Simon, and rapper Mos Def. The pianist released his debut album, Mood, on Fresh Sound New Talent in 2004. Canvas and In My Element followed in 2005 and 2007 respectively on Blue Note Records. In 2009, Glaspar released the forward-thinking album Double Booked which featured a mix of modal post-bop and funky, ’80s-Herbie Hancock-inspired numbers.

Eric Dolphy – Out To Lunch
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1964, Jazz

Eric Dolphy was among the most daring, impassioned, and technically assured improvisers to come of age in the 1960s. From his groundbreaking work with Chico Hamilton and Charles Mingus, through his catalytic stint with John Coltrane, and all through his brilliant solo recordings for Prestige, this reed innovator defined the best elements of the swing and the bebop traditions, from Benny Carter through Bird, while extending on the rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic freedom of Monk. Dolphy is an emotional shaman with a keen comic edge, as is evident in the rhythmic sauntering, drunken gait of his theme to “Straight Up and Down,” and Monk’s influence is clearly discernible in Dolphy’s witty dissonances and vocalized blues phrasing throughout Out to Lunch! (his only Blue Note recording, completed shortly before his untimely death). Rhythm masters Richard Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, and Tony Williams suspend time at will, sculpting in open space, while deconstructing the harmony and superimposing cubist rhythmic displacements–periodically regrouping around Freddie Hubbard’s bumblebee trumpet and the leader’s vocalized bass clarinet (his Monkish “Hat and Beard”), wailing alto (the martial parodies of the title tune), and exhilarating flute (the lyric, swinging “Gazzelloni”). Out to Lunch! represents Dolphy’s most fully realized vision.

Frank Strazzeri – After The Rain
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1976, Funk, Jazz

A solid pianist long based in the Los Angeles area, Frank Strazzeri has been in demand for straight-ahead sessions for decades. Although he originally started playing tenor and clarinet when he was 12, Strazzeri soon switched to piano. After studying at the Eastman School, he became the house pianist at a jazz club in Rochester in 1952, where he was able to accompany top jazz artists (including Roy Eldridge and Billie Holiday). In 1954, Strazzeri moved to New Orleans, where he played Dixieland with Sharkey Bonano and Al Hirt. That, however, was just a temporary departure, for he was always a bop-based player. Strazzeri worked with Charlie Ventura (1957-1958) and Woody Herman (1959), before settling permanently in Los Angeles in 1960. He became a studio musician, appeared on many sessions and worked with the who’s who of West Coast jazz. Strazzeri had opportunities to tour with Joe Williams and Maynard Ferguson, and was with Les Brown’s big band from 1971-1974. Among his other musical associations have been Terry Gibbs, Herb Ellis, the Lighthouse All-Stars, Art Pepper, Bud Shank, Cal Tjader, Louie Bellson, and Chet Baker, among many others, in addition to working with his own trios. As a leader, Strazzeri has headed sessions for Revelation, Glendale, Sea Breeze, Catalyst, Discovery, and Fresh Sound.

The Beginning Of The End – Funky Nassau
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1971, Funk

A monster bit of funk that’s unlike anything else we can think of! Beginning Of The End hailed from The Bahamas, but don’t hold that against them — because instead of being a Caribbean cliche, they took the best part of the island rhythms, and used them to forge an incredible approach to funk! They’ve got a choppy sound that’s the result of some incredibly dexterous guitar, bass, and drums — and which you’ll recognize instantly from their one-time hit “Funky Nassau”, a killer funk track that never gets old, no matter how many bands cover it over the years! That gem kicks off the album, which then rolls into the monster funky “part 2″, which is even better! Other titles are equally wonderful — and include “Come Down”, “Surrey Ride”, “Monkey Tamarind”, and “In The Deep”. Essential — and one that you’ll be spinning for years!

Skeletons – Smile
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Jazz

Benedic Lamdin is a musician, producer and engineer. He has produced a string of LP’s as Nostalgia 77 for Tru Thoughts; he also produces all the releases for his own label, Impossible Ark. This time though he has summoned a new style of work with a heavily African influenced record:
“Some of the music here started life as commissions for a library music company, pastiches and forgeries paid for by the current vogue for a certain style of African jazz. Once I’d done a few though I couldn’t stop, it was my default preoccupation…”
Indeed, this is an album was almost entirely written by Lamdin, whilst actually being played by various musicians as they passed through. The result is an incredible musical collage that has taken on its own identity.
In his own words, “Skeletons is a made up band. I kid you not – it doesn’t exist. These musicians never stood in the studio together, they just passed through my house or left some scraps of sound behind after sessions we were working on. This record is like a guy, pieced together and ready for the bonfire.”

Jimetta Rose – The Barber's Daughter
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Neo Soul

The full length debut from Jimetta Rose — with spacey soul production and spiritually resonant lyrics — maid all the more rewarding thanks to warm, emotional vocals and deft vocal arrangements from Jimetta! We first heard Ms Rose providing a sweet vocal foil for Shafiq of Sa-Ra on his excellent En-A-Freeka — and she steps out wonderfully on The Barber’s Daughter. The spacey hip hop soul sound is akin to Georgia Anne Muldrow, but Jimetta has her own, perhaps more grounded and focused vibe than the astral atmosherics. Also like Georgia, she has a talent for arranging her vocals to lead, follow and respond to hypnotic effect . This set should be a harbinger for even more wonderful things to come — great set and likely to be one of our favorite independent soul efforts from the LA scene for a long time to come! Includes “Glory Us”, “Life Unfolds”, “Sweet Necessity”, “Revolution Out There”, “On My Own”, “Middow”, “Constellations”, “Drifting Far Away”, “So Easy” and more.

Art Farmer – Yesterday's Thoughts
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1975, Jazz

In the Jazz medium, if one speaks of the flugelhorn, Art Farmer comes to mind immediately. He was “instrumental” in popularizing the use of it, and no one has made it sound more lyrical. YESTERDAY’S THOUGHTS is a ballad effort, which includes Michel Legrand’s “What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life”, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Bossa Nova number, “How Insensitive,” and Johnny Mercer’s “Namely You.” The title track was written by Farmer’s good friend and collaborator, Benny Golson, and features Farmer’s warm horn playing. The accompanying rhythm section consists of some of the finest Jazz musicians of the time; pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Higgins. Besides contributing with his outstanding piano solos on numerous tracks, Cedar Walton contributed the up-tempo number, “Firm Roots”, where the musicians expertly plays off each other.

Coleman Hawkins – Body and Soul
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1939, 1940, 1947, 1956, Jazz

Named after Hawkins’ 1939 proto-bebop classic, this legendary collection proves why Hawkins is considered by many the finest tenor ever. Picking up his career after a stint alongside Louis Armstrong in Fletcher Henderson’s big band and five years in prewar Europe, BODY AND SOUL focuses on Hawkins’ essential small group sides of the ’40s. Here the former swing enthusiast helped create bebop with the help of future jazz icons Benny Carter, J.J. Johnson, Zoot Sims and Max Roach. From “Meet Doctor Foo” to “Angel Face,” Hawkins transforms standards like “My Blue Heaven” into something startlingly new and creates originals like “Bouncing With Bean” that would go on to influenced an entire generation of players. The mid-’50s orchestral sessions that end the album show Hawkins’ eagerness to bring bebop’s structures into new arenas, and the lovely, string-laden remake of the title track indicates that the experiment was a success.
Recorded at RCA Studios, New York, New York between 1939 and 1956. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern.

Gil Scott-Heron (born April 1, 1949) is an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his late 1970s and early 1980s work as a spoken word soul performer and his collaborative work with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron’s recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. On his influence, Allmusic wrote “Scott-Heron’s unique proto-rap style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists”.
