Les McCann – Another Beginning
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1974, Jazz, Soul

By this point in his career, Les McCann’s moved past straight jazz, and is spending a lot of time on vocals — sung in a nice raspy style that makes up for what it lacks in technique with a nice dose of soul! The record’s got a few cuts that have some good funky riffs — like the jaunty “Some Day We’ll Meet Again”, and “The Morning Song”, which has an intro that’s especially nice. Other tracks include “The Song Of Love”, “Maybe You’ll Come Back”, and “My Soul Lies Deep”.

Don Cherry – Complete Communion
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1965, Jazz

While Don Cherry is most readily associated with his work with Ornette Coleman, he also made many contributions to the free-jazz canon on his own. Here on the colossal COMPLETE COMMUNION, Cherry demonstrates his uncanny talents in two large ensemble works that contain the entire pedagogy of what by 1965 was the full-blown “New Thing.” Eschewing the conventions of the norm was the order of the day for Cherry and his pianoless quartet, which included a young Gato Barbieri before his excursions into fiery Latin celebrations.
The concepts flow freely from one to the other in the massive title suite. Here Cherry and Barbieri toss the mantle of expression back and forth with what seems like an impassioned conversation. The melodies, when there are any, are irregular in shape and function as themes are traded among each member of the ensemble. Drummer Ed Blactkwell is the engine of the group, providing churning support and filling in open areas with colorful flourishes and intriguing sound effects. The second large work, “Elephantasy,” begins with an angular bounce before gliding into a mesmerizing free section. Everything from burning bop to a schizophrenic waltz completes the piece, which bubbles with bewitching freedom.

Azymuth – Light As A Feather
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1979, Funk, Jazz

Azymuth features Jose Roberto Bertrami on keyboards and percussion, Alex Malheiros on bass, Ivan Conte on drums and synthesizers, and Aleuda on additional percussion. The group was formed in 1969 in Rio de Janeiro. Due to the overwhelming prominence of Brazilian pop, Azymuth barely survived during their first decade because of their insistence on playing jazz and samba influenced instrumentals. The band’s break came in 1978 when Bertrami was invited to pen some tunes for an album by percussion virtuoso, Airto Moreira. A tour with Flora Purim added to the group’s notoriety, and a few months later the musicians signed a recording contract. Several well-received albums followed, including Outubro.
Against all odds, keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami and his Brazilian jazz-rock band, Azymuth, made quite a name for themselves in the early 1980s, playing an infectious music that blended the subtle melodies of bossa nova with hot samba rhythms and a dash of rock and roll. Light As A Feather, the group’s first release, is filled with fiery Brazilian sounds and the kind of beats that make you want to get up and dance. This fusion classic is available through a special CD only release on the Black Sun label, thanks to their producer, Joel Leibovitz.
Light As A Feather is a superb introduction to the many talents of the Brazilian band which accompanied Flora Purim on her critically acclaimed 1978 American tour. It was Purim’s assertion that Azymuth was the best group in Brazil today that gained United States exposure for the group in their own right. A textural delight, Light As A Feather features a seemingly endless variety of exotic percussion devices tastefully blended together with the uniquely spiced outpourings of Bertrami’s synthesizers. The Flora Purim/Stanley Clarke title track is an ethereal standout, while the Azymuth original Jazz Carnival offers an extended jaunt through electrifying solos and heated percussion licks against a throbbing dance beat. In fact, it was this cut which propelled Light As A Feather to the top 10 in jazz charts worldwide.

Dexter Wansel – Life on Mars
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1976, Funk

Keyboardist/arranger/producer/recording artist Dexter Wansel can be heard throughout the catalog of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff’s Philadelphia International Records. In 1975, Wansel met Gamble & Huff when he was a member of a band called Yellow Sunshine, which also boasted guitarist Roland Chambers who would later become a part of MFSB, the house band for Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International Records. Becoming a part of the staff creative collective, Wansel began arranging, playing keyboards, and writing songs for the label’s acts including the O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, and the Intruders, among others. His skills can be heard on non-PIR sides like Jermaine Jackson’s “Where Are You Now” from his gold LP Let’s Get Serious and “Tonight” from Junior’s Acquired Taste LP. His frequent songwriting partners were Cynthia Biggs, Bunny Sigler, and T. Life. A synth pioneer, Wansel’s first LP arranging assignment was several tracks on Carl Carlton’s 1975 LP, I Wanna Be With You, produced by Bunny Sigler. A Biggs/Wansel song, “The Sweetest Pain,” a duet between Wansel and Jean Carn, originally a 1979 single from Wansel’s Time Is Slipping Away LP, was a popular radio-aired LP from Loose Ends’ Zagora LP. Wansel’s own charting LPs were Life on Mars from summer 1976 (includes two tracks with Instant Funk, “Life on Mars” and You Can Be What You Wanna Be”), What the World Is Coming To, Voyager (with its great space-age oriented graphics) from spring 1978, and Time Is Slipping Away from 1979. Several tracks from his LPs were radio-aired LP tracks (the lushly orchestrated Theme From the Planets,” the spacy, funky “Disco Lights”) During the ’90s, Wansel continued to work with the reactivated Philadelphia International Records and occasionally toured.

Shlohmo – Camping EP
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Electronic

Better known to friends, family, and Friends of Friends, as the 20-year-old Henry Laufer, the SF-by-LA producer Shlohmo returns with Camping, a digi-EP celebrating the May 24th first-run vinyl release of this year’s Shlohmoshun Deluxe LP. Having already headlined LA’s premiere beat-based party, Low End Theory as well as being featured by XLR8R, the BBC (Mary Anne Hobbs), LA Times and more, Shlohmo is on the tip of the ear for those attuned to the spaced out beat scene led by Flying Lotus, Ras G, & Nosaj Thing, among others…
As far as titles go, Camping is particularly apropos; the outdoor and indoor collide as Shlohmo’s selection of found sounds rub up agianst the technology of 8-bit blap & subwoofer stress tests in three new tracks. Additional amenities include remixes from hotly tipped LA music maker Baths and fellow up-and-comer Asura (on the AWESOME new LA label, Non Projects) as well as recent Ghostly International signing Shigeto. There’s also a rework from Shloh’ himself, flipping Shlohmoshun Deluxe opener “Tomato Squeeze” into “Tomato Smash.” Camping comes just as Shlohmo stakes out a brand new full-length and will surely tide those itching to hear what Mr. Laufer has in store for us in the near future!

Dutch – Bright Cold Day
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010

Dutch is the buzzed about new project featuring the vocals of newcomer Liz Fullerton and production by Stoupe of the critically acclaimed Hip-Hop group Jedi Mind Tricks. The unlikely duo first collaborated on the JMT track “Razorblade Salvation”on Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell and again on the track “Death Messiah” from , A History of Violence. The union of Liz’s deeply sympathetic vocal stylings and Stoupe’s trademark visceral beats made both songs standout cuts from those records as both remain favorites with fans and critics alike.
Now, set as a two-piece outfit, Dutch is the full realization of the artistic accomplishment at which their previous collaborations only hinted. After years of critical and commercial success as the enigmatic production guru behind JMT, Stoupe wanted to make a different kind of record; something that kept the same raw aesthetic he pioneered with his prior work, while allowing him to branch out as both a producer and songwriter. Liz’s timely and fortuitous entry into the group’s life was a destiny that seemed undeniable, if not a little bit lucky.
Nearly three years in the making, Dutch is set to release their debut album, A Bright Cold Day. The album features 12 hand-crafted tracks which have conjured comparisons to the dark programming aesthetics of Portishead, the soul-piercing melodies of Cat Power, and the viscerally provoking tone of Dido.

José James & Jef Neve – For All We Know
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Jazz

“This record is all about capturing the moment,” Jose James says of For All We Know, his Impulse! release. The album, a collaboration between James and noted Belgian pianist Jef Neve, finds the charismatic young vocalist applying his warm, rich baritone to a sterling assortment of timeless jazz and pop standards. The result is an eloquently spare, effortlessly expressive set. James’ vivid performances, paired with the intimate duo format, lend new emotional depth to such beloved classics as “Tenderly,” “Body and Soul,” Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life” and George and Ira Gershwin’s “Embraceable You.”
All but one of the album’s songs were recorded in one informal six-hour session at Galaxy Studios in Mol, Belgium. No producer, no overdubs and no retakes. The project came together spontaneously, after James and Neve performed together on a Belgian television show, and Neve filled in for James’ regular pianist at a concert in Brussels. The two were so inspired by their instant musical rapport that they hastily booked a studio in order to capture their budding chemistry on tape.
“We just played the songs we love the way we felt them, with no constraints,” James explains, adding, “Playing as a duo is very pure and honest; it’s just you, the piano and silence.”

DJ Dusk's Root Down Soundclash
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2001, 2002, 2003

Early in 2001 the Los Angeles club Root Down put on their first of a three part series called “Sound Clash,” organized & hosted by DJ Dusk. Based on the reggae sound system competitions, this was a hip-hop event – in this case featuring Madlib and Cut Chemist – going head to head, beat for beat for respect in front of a packed club.
Madlib was then unknown to many in the crowd, and Cut Chemist was at the height of his success with Jurassic 5. Each of the tracks had never been released. Each of the three rounds saw the excitement rise. The last round unleashed a partisan celebration from the captivated crowd.
Approximately a year later, the Root Down organized the round two, featuring Will.I.Am and Thes One. The drama and controversy of Round Two arose from the huge aesthetic differences on display between the “combatants.” The theatrics of the evening – clothes being taken off, ludicrous names and costumes – made the night a talking point in Los Angeles to this day. And Will.I.Am wasn’t a multi-platinum artist yet!
The last battle featured Oh No and Exile in 2003. With a relatively dignified display by the youngest pairing of the three, they closed the series with good music and much respect.
Mochilla’s Eric Coleman and B+ filmed all three events, but never had plans to release this as a DVD. However, since the tragic passing of DJ Dusk in 2006 they felt it was important to honor his legacy and share his gifts. This is for him, no edits, no overdubs, no interruptions… just raw hip-hop at its most exciting: vital and real.
