People living anywhere other than southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or New York in the ’70s missed the Catalyst experience. Catalyst, a four-man jazz combo from Philadelphia, played a gourmet of avant-garde, contemporary bop, soul, and funk at the dawn of the big fusion explosion. The originals were Eddie Green (keyboards, vocals), Sherman Ferguson (drums, percussion, marimba), Odean Pope (sax, flute, oboe), and Al Johnson (bass). Tyrone Brown replaced Johnson after Catalyst’s self-titled debut album on Cobblestone Records in 1972. Producer Skip Drinkwater discovered them playing at the Aqua Lounge in West Philly; this resulted in a contract with Cobblestone Records, with Drinkwater producing. Green was a disciple of the Bud Powell school of pianism, and was instructed on chord changes by Powell’s brother, Richard. Pope was tutored by Ray Bryant, Benny Golson, and others; strains of John Coltrane are revealed when the aggressive sax player expands. Ferguson was a bop drummer whose effortless tempo changes and impeccable timing kept Catalyst tight. Johnson, who joined Weather Report after Catalyst’s first album, was self-taught, but influenced by classical music.
They rehearsed hard and inspired one another to push farther into unknown territories where all the music they liked could be wrapped into a holistic sound. Jazz clubs in Philly were plentiful in the ’70s, which may account for the group’s lack of trips outside the region. The band’s eponymous funk-jazz debut, Catalyst, is highly regarded as a fusion masterpiece.

Giorgio Azzolini is a well-known Italian double-bass jazz player and one of the most passionate supporters of this kind of music. Born in La Spezia on 29-3-28, Giorgio Azzolini studied in Florence with maestro Antonio Godoli and built up his profile within the jazz circuit thanks to a long period in the Basso Valdambrini Quintet and to many performances in various jazz festivals. Throughout his career he performed has with innumerous artist like: Chet Baker, Billy Holiday, Herb Geller, Teddy Wilson, Hellen Merrill, Stephane Grappelli, Mal Waldron, Thoots Thielemans, Dizzy Reece, Maynard Ferguson, Kenny Clark, Conte Candoli, Slide Hampton, Gato Barbieri, Jean-Luc Ponty, Phil Woods, Lars Gullin, Buddy Collette, Franco Ambrosetti, Tony Scott, Art Farmer, Frank Rosolino and many others.

Michel Sardaby – Gail

Michel Sardaby was born in 1935 in Martinique. He learned to play the piano when he was 5 years old; in the brasserie of his father in Fort-de-France, where music was constantly played. At 10 years age, Michel is a noted prodigy, playing with the passion of with experienced musicians. He goes to Paris where he continues his studies of art at the Boulle School until obtaining his diploma in 1956, at which point he decides to devote himself exclusively to his career of being a professional jazz pianist. Throughout the 60s, he played piano with blues musicians like Sonny Boy Williamson and T-Bone Walker, at the same time beginning to release more jazz-focused solo albums.Michel has been active on the European scene, especially in Paris where he resides.

Michael Longo – 900 Shares of the Blues

A killer electric piano jam from the great Mike Longo – stone funky, and one of his best albums ever! The whole thing’s done in a really laidback style that’s simply amazing – a lot like the best CTI work of the time, but somehow rougher, and with a darker edge. Longo riffs out on the keys over rhythm by Ron Carter, Mickey Roker, and Ralph MacDonald – and Joe Farrell and Randy Brecker add in some great horn work that fleshes out the tunes with a deeply soulful jazzy feel. The whole album’s great, with a range of moods, emotions, and grooves that Longo hardly ever hit again – and titles include “Summers Gone”, “El Moodo Grande”, “Like a Thief In the Night”, “Ocean of His Might”, and “Magic Number”.

”LIQUID SPIRITS”, Dutch Contemporary Soul formation founded by producers/musicians Manuel Hugas (bass) and Wiboud Burkens (keyboards). The Liquid Spirits band consists solely of the finest musicians of the Dutch Music Scene: Jasmin Tusjadia, Dedre Twiss, Lo van Gorp, Brian Zalmijn (vocals), Cyril Directie (drums), Wiboud Burkens (keyboards), Manuel Hugas (bass) and Marc Bien (guitars).
Considered one of the best hip hop-soul bands in Europe, their music – a mix of hiphop grooves, ambient and soul is melodic and deep. Their “hip hop-soul” music arises because the group writes, produce and record together. When doing this they use different production styles like the monotheism of sample culture, old school soul recordings with all live instruments and combinations. The variety of vocal harmonies and soulful melodies are never slick, but always sophisticated, subtle and emotional.

Noorda – Noorda

A Swiss typical studiò between the mountains. This is the first approach of Noorda to listeners, an image even before sounds setting the mood that seems to belong to northern Europe instead of a Latin country. This confers to Noorda’s music an accessible picture for listeners able to benift from the warmth the album seems to give off, both physically and mentally.
This album finds its own place in the world of electronic music creating a soundtrack to ponder with your emotions, thoughts and states of mind. They achieve this generally starting from a simple voice or a plain guitar proving that in music less can be best. Quite particular is the constant reboiling sensation at the core of the whole sound; melodic and profound yet weaved with strong elements that sometimes find a brief second to emerge and then disappear again.

LA’s Take gives up a dope album of blunted slug-hop featuring a mutant jazz mix from Dimlite. ‘The Dirty Decibels of Thomas Two Thousand’ is a merry concoction of good-times soul samples and crafty beat science pieced together with a spacecaked collage effect that only works so well due to Take’s organic and fluid approach to beat construction. His sound is comparable to many of his LA peers, from Ras G to Fly Lo, taking Dilla as a starting point before jetting off into the astro-hop ether with a fully loaded zoot and and a dusty MPC for company.

The concept of the ‘Odyssey Man EP’ was first conceived by Robert Strauss in 2006 as a way to bridge from abstract, spacey hip-hop, and beat-oriented experimental music to more song-based and melodically structures. He wanted to transfer this sound and vibe from the streets to a more mainstream urban, soul, r&b audience and he took his talent on a three-years odyssey to get the fusion and feelings just right. Proceduri De Rutina is a deep but chilled trip into Hubert Daviz’s beat cosmos, inspired by some of the most obscure Eastern-European jazz you have never heard of. Daviz was born in Romania and moved to Germany at age 5. Today he lives in Cologne where he started making beats in 2004 as part of the UpMyAlley family since 2007, and produces tracks for Huss & Hodn (Entourage) and London-based songstress Shuanise (Eglo). “Proceduri De Rutina” is a mini-album made entirely of samples from Romanian jazz records. The project started as a just-for-fun beattape, after Hubert got hooked on the vintage jazz of his home country in late 2009.

Pretty Lights – Spilling Over Every Side EP

So this is the 2nd EP of my 2010 trilogy. Its called “Spilling Over Every Side” I created it pretty much everywhere, as a majority of the production took place while I was touring over the last 4 months. It isn’t a new concept for me, touring and working on an album simultaneously.. but this time around it was pretty intense, there wasn’t much time for anything else. I really tried to push my style with this EP and explore several different genres, sometimes within the same song. The songs are long and there are a lot of parts… I guess, because thats what I want to hear… fresh, intricate, beats that attempt to communicate ideas or tell a story somehow. Another idea I implemented on this EP more than once, is the transitioning between something pretty and organic to something heavy and electro. A sort of dimension flip.. something I’ve done in the past.. but I really tried to push it with these tracks. Anyway, I hope you like it, I do.

Paul Nawrata and David Schuller, better known as Urbs & Cutex, Urbs & Cutex are two scientists on their own mission, leaving trends and hypes behind, to focus on what’s most important: the music. “Peace Talks!” takes the listener on a journey, discovering a whole new sound universe. Deeply rooted in mid 90´s Hip Hop, their sound has matured since “Breaks of Dawn”. While their minimalistic debut was more of a DJ Tool (still being a pure pleasure for homelistening sessions) the “Peace Talks” tracks are more structured, reminding us of classical songwriting. Paul and David are taking us back into a time when MPC 60´s and SP 1200´s were the instruments of choice, before the 303´s and Triton´s took over Hip Hop. Back into a time when rap records consisted of loops, before soul was replaced by cold electronic bleep sounds and being ‘jiggy’ was all that. But don’t be mistaken, Urbs & Cutex are not retro or strictly Hip Hop. These guys have the gift to capture the “mid 90´s New York flavour” and combine it with the state of the art sound that we all love listening to nowadaysIt’s all about the magic of a loop!

Lou Donaldson – Blues Walk

Lou Donaldson’s undisputed masterpiece, Blues Walk, marks the point where the altoist began to decisively modify his heavy Charlie Parker influence and add a smoky, bluesy flavor of his own. The material is still firmly in the bebop style, and the mellower moments aren’t as sleepy as some of Donaldson’s subsequent work, so the album sounds vital and distinctive even as it slows down and loosens things up. What elevates Blues Walk to classic status is its inviting warmth. Donaldson’s sweetly singing horn is melodic throughout the six selections, making even his most advanced ideas sound utterly good-natured and accessible. The easy-swinging title cut is arguably Donaldson’s signature tune even above his late-’60s soul-jazz hits, and his other two originals – “Play Ray” and “Callin’ All Cats” – are in largely the same vein. Elsewhere, Donaldson displays opposite extremes of his sound; the up-tempo bebop classic “Move” provokes his fieriest playing on the record, and his romantic version of “Autumn Nocturne” is simply lovely, a precursor to Lush Life. The addition of Ray Barretto on conga is a subtle masterstroke, adding just a bit more rhythmic heft to the relaxed swing. There are numerous likable records in Donaldson’s extensive catalog, but Blues Walk is the best of them all.

Their performances have a collective concept of sound democracy. The Instabile Orchestra, its players are indeed heading towards the creative expression of the 21st Century. Let’s not forget the stones, rivers, eyes, ears, and skies of Europe. Listen to the music, it will tell you why.

Ornette Coleman – Love Call

One of the two quartet sessions that Ornette cut for Blue Note in the late 60s – and tight mature work like the New York Is Now sides, recorded in the company of Dewey Redman and the Coltrane rhythm section of Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones, which offers a contrasting perspective to most of the preceding Coleman groups. Ornette plays alto and trumpet, as he was doing around that time, and Redman’s playing is amongst his finest on record. Four tunes: the title track, “Airborne”, “Check Out Time”, and “Open To The Public”.

Roberto Pregadio & Romano Mussolini – Kriminal

An amazing little soundtrack that’s every bit as groovy as its cover – a great blend of 60s mod and Italian jazz, all in support of the skeleton-costumed master thief Kriminal! This CD represents the first full length presentation of the film’s soundtrack – a long-overdue masterpiece that steps off the jazzier modes used in Italian films of the early 60s, touched by some of the more dynamic production and arrangement styles that were creeping in later in the decade – all served up over short, sweet tracks that dance with delight and drama throughout! There’s even a bit of the British and American spy modes of the time creeping into the mix – no doubt a way of highlighting the “international crime” reputation of lead character Kriminal.
