Lee Morgan – Tom Cat
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1964, Jazz

Lee Morgan and Jackie McLean star on this 6-piece ensemble session. Blue Note assembled a band for this session which looked like a reunion of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Lee Morgan, Jackie McLean, Curtis Fuller, and of course Art Blakey all star on this CD. Only McCoy Tyner on piano somehow missed playing with Art’s group. I like the writing on this session. The group’s unity suggests rehearsal and mutual interest in achieving great results. Lee hit a groove in the mid-60′s, recording several great sessions. Hearing him play with McCoy is a special treat.

Art Ensemble Of Chicago – Les Stances A Sophie
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1970, Jazz

Soundtrack of “Les Stances A Sophie”. Filmed in Paris in 1970, this fully-subtitled film features killer music, groovy clothes and post-1968 revolutionary ideals. This super-rare film is now perhaps best known for its soundtrack from the legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago (who also feature in the film). The album features the epic ‘Theme de Yoyo’, the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s finest ever moment featuring the soaring vocals of Fontella Bass and the super=heavy Funk drums of then current newcomer to the Art Ensemble Don Moye. The Art Ensemble of Chicago were living in Europe in 1970 when the film was made along with a host of other U.S. Jazz ‚migr‚s such as Archie Shepp, Ornette Coleman and more.

Chick Corea – Friends
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1978, Jazz

After his days as the leader of the highly successful fusion group Return To Forever, Chick Corea turned to a more traditional style in his solo career. Friends from 1978 features elements of swing, Latin music and the sensitive intimacy inherent in a small acoustic ensemble. And what an ensemble it is; no less than Joe Farrell (reeds, flute), Eddie Gomez (bass) and Steve Gadd (drums) are on hand to masterfully interpret Corea’s dynamic compositions. The results are nothing less than magnificent.
It takes little time to hear why these four virtuosos were the most in-demand musicians of their era. The opening “The One Step” offers a caressing melody by Corea on the Fender Rhodes piano, opening up into a tight, swinging solo section driven by the inimitable Gadd. The flowing “Waltz for Dave,” a tribute to Dave Brubeck, swings lightly as Farrell turns in a spectacular flute performance. Things really start to burn on “Samba Song,” a muscular Latin piece that each member executes impressively. Likewise, the fast-paced “Sicily” is a fiery samba that displays Corea’s knack for the genre. The session closes with the stunning “Cappucino,” a modern bebop tune that could only have been performed by this sensational group of Friends.

Roscoe Mitchell Sextet – Sound
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1966, Jazz

With Sound, saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell unloosed blazing glory in 1967. Expressing an emphasis on music as, of course, “sound” rather than “tune,” Mitchell’s sextet starts with an immediately fast gait. The quickness is undergirded by Malachi Favors’s bass and Lester Lashley’s cello on “Ornette,” of which an alternate take opens the CD. Here Lester Bowie’s trumpet is early in the cycle of exploration that gave the Art Ensemble of Chicago–of which both Bowie and Mitchell are charter members–such a slurry brass force. Tenor saxophonist Maurice McIntyre develops his twisty solo logic from chunks mulled over, shredded, and unpacked. Mitchell’s alto cuts quickly and incisively, as well as providing eerie and lengthy sheets of notes in “Sound 1,” where Lashley takes up trombone and provides a slippery brass skyline, with Alvin Fielder’s malletted cymbals providing the blustering clouds.

The Paul Horn Quintet with Voices – Here’s That Rainy Day
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1966, Jazz
One of the great gifts of music its capacity to create a mood-or to perfectly relflect a mood alreay present in the mind and heart of the listener. In this album, Paul is backed by his quintet, augmented by two harps and a chorus. The Voices are used differently than they have been in the past. They sing only the most important line in each song. The rest of the time the chours becomes an instrumental section, with Paul’s Horn taking over as the lyricist. Whether telling the story on clarinet, bass flute or alto flute, Paul’s message is a bittersweet sound, so sensuous, so touching, that it is impossible to hear it without being moved to a new level of mood…a mood that haunts you on “That Rainy Day”.

Jackie McLean – Let Freedom Ring
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1962, Jazz

This classic quartet session from 1962 is a quintessential Jackie Mclean disc. Without having to share the front line with another horn, McLean is free to unleash his signature wail in the spotlight with ample support from Walter Davis, Herbie Lewis, and Billy Higgins. Like other McLean sessions of the period, Let Freedom Ring features first-rate compositions whose melodies give way to stirring solos that cover the full range of creative expression.
McLean is in his stride on the opening burner “Melody for Melonae,” which, after a very programmatic beginning, allows the saxophonist plenty of room to cut loose. Davis’s superb piano work on the ballad “I’ll Keep Loving You” provides a delightful backdrop to McLean’s expressive testimonial with wailing screams of emotion. “Rene,” named for McLean’s son, is a quirky tune that offers angular interaction between all members of the quartet and a driving performance by Higgins. Finally, the swinging “Omega” is one of McLean’s most dynamic compositions and closes the session on a stellar high.

On Display is mixed by DJ Devastate, a talented Swedish DJ that released his debut album on the legendary English label BBE Records. This mix features a selection of hip hop and soul productions made by Erik L in the past few years along with some new and previously unreleased material. Herbert Jeffrey “Herbie” Hancock (born April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American pianist, bandleader and composer. As part of Miles Davis’s “second great quintet”, Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was one of the primary architects of the “post-bop” sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk. Hancock’s music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs “cross over” and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Hancock’s best-known solo works include “Cantaloupe Island”, “Watermelon Man” (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), “Maiden Voyage”, “Chameleon”, and the singles “I Thought It Was You” and “Rockit”. His 2007 tribute album “River: The Joni Letters” won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

Grant Green – Idle Moments
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1963, Jazz

The alluring title track alone makes this CD a must-have. A 15-minute dreamscape laid down by pianist Duke Pearson, the song features enchanting solos by tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson. Guitarist Grant Green’s single-note melody heightens the song’s suspense. Grant’s original “Jean de Fleur” finds the ensemble in brisker tempo, while their cover of John Lewis’s “Django” exudes the spine-tingling coolness of Lewis’s brand of bop.

John Coltrane – Ascension
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1965, Jazz

The album Ascension played a profoundly important role in John Coltrane’s final period. Recorded in June 1965, almost exactly two years before his death, this session marks Coltrane’s final stepping off point into free jazz. The album also marks a division for Coltrane’s fans, as there are some that applaud his final escape from jazz tradition while others simply couldn’t follow him into the great unknown.
One way or another, Ascension refuses to be ignored. A stunning list of colleagues joins the legendary saxophonist on his final quest. Besides his famed regular quartet, avant-garde saxophonists Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Shepp, extra bassist Art Davis, and even trumpet star Freddie Hubbard, among others, produce an intense sonic assault. If you’re sensitive to dissonant noise and uncontrolled barrages of sound, ASCENSION will offer you no comfort. However, the unbridled emotional onslaught that Coltrane unleashes here dwarfs any other artist’s entire output. Love it or hate it, this is one disc that’s sure to stay on your mind long after its din has faded.
Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); John Tchicai, Marion Brown (alto saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (tenor saxophone, trumpet); Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp (tenor saxophone); Dewey Johnson (trumpet); McCoy Tyner (piano); Elvin Jones (drums).

fLako – Mini Tollbooth
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Electronic

‘Mini Tollbooth’ is inspired by a novel called Phantom Tollbooth. The film adaptation from 1961 is so beautiful. I like to get lost in these childish worlds of freedom, where everything is possible. This modern fairy tale is about a young boy named Milo who is bored by the world around him. He feels everything is a waste of time. He comes home from school one day to find in his bedroom an anonymous package containing a miniature tollbooth and a map of the Lands Beyond. He takes the map, drives through in his toy car, and instantly finds himself driving on a road to Expectations. Enjoying the ride, he pays no attention to his route and soon becomes lost in the Doldrums, a colorless place where thinking and laughing are not allowed. He is having plenty more adventures like watching Chroma the Great conduct his orchestra in playing the colors of the sunset or meeting The Awful Dynne, a genie who collects noises for Dr. Dischord.
