DJ Ragz, Mudd, ST/Mic – The Intermission Vol.2

null

Mudd, Ragz and stmic met up on Dec 3rd through the 5th 2010 at the Timeless Daimyo Studios to put together an LP. The Session started late on Friday and ended early on Sunday. Mudd using a Ensoniq ASR10, Ragz and stmic both using the Akai MPC 2000XL worked on little sleep to produce 13 tracks. The concept of the project was to put together an LP without over thinking the whole production process. The idea was to just sit down and have fun. The three producers who are also very close friends for many years wanted you to have the product for free. Enjoy and please pass this on to your friends.

Prefuse 73/Jaytram/Epstein – Remixed

null

This remix record wanders through the minds of Jaytram (drummer for Yeasayer) and Prefuse 73. They were both asked to plunder and ravage the entire Epstein catalog as the source material and pass it through their respective creative processes. These two creators are less worried about a notion of sanctity of the original and instead are visionaries with the material, engineering something previously unimaginable. There are about 1 million adjectives needed to try to cartograph a tangible roadmap to where this record leads, but we would rather you just take your own journey.

Wayne Shorter – Night Dreamer

null

Shorter’s Blue Note debut, Night Dreamer, is a stunning statement from one of the premiere saxophonists and composers in the history of jazz. In 1964, after a long period as musical director for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and newly joining Miles Davis’ quintet, Shorter was primed to enter the field as a major solo artist. His guests include Lee Morgan (trumpet), renewing the outstanding frontline the two formed in Blakey’s band, and McCoy Tyner (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) from Coltrane’s legendary quartet. The musical vision here, however, is Shorter’s alone.

Shorter’s distinctive compositional style begins to take shape with the opening title track, a bouncing waltz with a dusky, modal flavor and a subtle rhythmic drive. Likewise, his arrangement of an “Oriental Folk Song” has a similar burnished tone with beautifully executed harmonies between Shorter and Morgan. Interestingly, the swinging “Black Nile” and “Armageddon” are very reflective of Shorter’s previous tenure with Blakey while perpetuating the range of his newfound freedom with Davis’ group. “Charcoal Blues” is the most traditional piece in the set but nevertheless gives us a sense of his more independent leanings. Also included are two takes of the graceful ballad “Virgo,” a classic Shorter composition.

Thelonious Monk Quartet – Misterioso

null

After he was denied club work in New York for years because a marijuana conviction kept him from holding a “cabaret card,” Thelonious Monk’s late-’50s stays at the Five Spot provided him with a forum through which he could reach an audience and also acted as an intense musical laboratory. Misterioso and its companion disc, Thelonious in Action, were Monk’s first professionally recorded live dates, and they feature the excellent 1958 quartet with tenorist Johnny Griffin stretching out on Monk tunes like “In Walked Bud” and “Evidence.” Monk could not only find new dissonances, but he could also find new meanings for dissonance, imbuing his sometimes elliptical, even minimalist, compositions with a joyous playfulness. Griffin adds a strong blues flavor and some unlikely quotations that leaven his intense focus.

Freddie Hubbard – Goin’ Up

null

Freddie Hubbard’s Goin’ Up is an excellent all-star date in the classic Blue Note tradition. Considered an up-and-comer at the time, Hubbard is in stellar form here. He displays sharp technical skills and a daring sense of adventure. Hubbard’s sound is a logical descendant of Clifford Brown’s, but a bright, distinctive shimmer hints at even greater things to come. This hard swinging session with Hank Mobley, McCoy Tyner, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones is a fine showcase for Hubbard’s emerging talents and a foreshadow of his tenure with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Fellow trumpeter Kenny Dorham contributes two to GOIN’ UP. The classic “Asiatic Raes” is a punchy burner with driving solos, and “Karioka” is another fiery number featuring vigorous rhythms by the incomparable Jones. Hubbard and Mobley are a perfect match on the front line, evidenced on two Mobely-penned numbers–the bluesy “The Changing Scene” and the intricate bopper “A Peck A Sec.” The ageless ballad “I Wish I Knew” features Hubbard’s most sensual treatment, his dark, controlled tones followed by tasteful solos from Mobley and Tyner. This most enjoyable session closes with the bouncing “Blues For Brenda,” another fine offering from the trumpeter’s pen.

Charlie Haden – Quartet West

null

Charlie Haden’s Quartet West launched the ensemble that would become his most popular grouping throughout the ’80s and ’90s. Haden, who had made a name for himself as an avant-garde bassist in Ornette Coleman’s band and elsewhere, including the influential Liberation Music Orchestra, returned to a bop-influenced, more mainstream sound with this grouping. While the album may not be stretching many boundaries stylistically, this format does little to dilute Haden’s impressive performances, and his love for this material is made obvious with his intricate arrangements, especially on the two Ornette Coleman tunes, “The Good Life” and “The Blessing.” (“The Blessing” appears as one of two bonus tracks on the CD version, with the other being Billy Strayhorn’s “Passion Flower.”) “The Good Life,” in particular, is infused with energy, and is a showcase for some nimble, joyous, effortless playing by pianist Alan Broadbent. Haden has three originals here, the strongest of which, “In the Moment,” shows off some of the rhythmic complexity that he has displayed in his previous work. Perhaps the true highlight of the album, though, is a version of Charlie Parker’s “Passport” that brings together the whole band in one exuberant expression of energy.

Duke Jordan – Flight To Jordan

null

Duke Jordan made his mark in jazz in the late 1940s as one of bebop innovator Charlie Parker’s regular pianists, but he didn’t blossom as a composer until the hard-bop era of the mid-’50s. Flight To Jordan, his 1960 Blue Note debut, captures Jordan at a creative peak. The album features a slightly unusual combination of musicians: Reggie Workman, who would soon thereafter make his own mark in jazz’s avant-garde sector; Stanley Turrentine, whose lusciously smooth, big-toned tenor would establish him as a leading light of the soul-jazz movement; and the fine, under-recorded Jamaican trumpeter Dizzy Reece. The latter’s tart approach contrasts wonderfully to Turrentine’s sweetly earthy sound. As a bonus, this remastered reissue includes two bonus tracks, one a trio take of the beloved standard “I Should Care.”

Anthony Williams – Spring

Tony Williams was truly a phenomenom. When he made this album, he was 19 and had already put in more than two years with Miles Davis, participated in a dozen classic Blue Note recordings, cut his first album as a leader and revolutionized the way drums were played. This album features tenormen Wayne Shorter and Sam Rivers, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Gary Peacock, and Williams in a variety of combinations. The core of this music is empathy — listening to each other and maintaining the highest level of creativity. It is the last album Williams would make before forming his fusion group Lifetime.

Ornette Coleman – Free Jazz

null

As jazz’s first extended, continuous free improvisation LP, Free Jazz practically defies superlatives in its historical importance. Ornette Coleman’s music had already been tagged “free,” but this album took the term to a whole new level. Aside from a predetermined order of featured soloists and several brief transition signals cued by Coleman, the entire piece was created spontaneously, right on the spot. The lineup was expanded to a double-quartet format, split into one quartet for each stereo channel: Ornette, trumpeter Don Cherry, bassist Scott LaFaro, and drummer Billy Higgins on the left; trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Ed Blackwell on the right. The rhythm sections all play at once, anchoring the whole improvisation with a steady, driving pulse. The six spotlight sections feature each horn in turn, plus a bass duet and drum duet; the “soloists” are really leading dialogues, where the other instruments are free to support, push, or punctuate the featured player’s lines. Since there was no road map for this kind of recording, each player simply brought his already established style to the table. That means there are still elements of convention and melody in the individual voices, which makes Free Jazz far more accessible than the efforts that followed once more of the jazz world caught up. Still, the album was enormously controversial in its bare-bones structure and lack of repeated themes. Despite resembling the abstract painting on the cover, it wasn’t quite as radical as it seemed; the concept of collective improvisation actually had deep roots in jazz history, going all the way back to the freewheeling early Dixieland ensembles of New Orleans. Jazz had long prided itself on reflecting American freedom and democracy and, with Free Jazz, Coleman simply took those ideals to the next level. A staggering achievement.

Ramon Morris – Sweet Sister Funk

null

One of the rarest albums on the Groove Merchant label – and one of the best! Ramon Morris has a sweet tone on the tenor that works very well with the electric piano in his tight little combo – grooving with a style that’s like the best Black Jazz funk records of the time – mixing together bright notes, funky rhythms, and plenty of great chord changes! Cecil Bridgewater’s on trumpet, and the band has a really righteous feel – with lots of real soul and thoughtful playing mixed into the jazz funk grooves of the record. Massive – with titles that include “Sweat”, “Lord Sideways”, “Sweet Sister Funk”, and a nice version of “People Make The World Go Round”.

Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra – Hooked Up Classics

null

Shawn Lee dons his Ping Pong Orchestra hat for an album inspired by the Hooked On Classics series of the early 1980s. This popular series of albums (arranged by Louis Clark of Electric Light Orchestra fame) took well-known classical pieces and gave them a contemporary re-working, mostly adding a disco flavor. Lee throws his new musical twist on the idea, taking 12 favorite classical tracks and squeezing them through the Ping Pong Orchestra machine. The end result is an album that will introduce new listeners to legendary pieces of music, and is set to turn the heads of classical music fans.

Ornette Coleman – The Shape Of Jazz To Come

null

As the 50s ended, Ornette Coleman became the new herald of the future of jazz, surpassing for a time, even John Coltrane. Intent on feeling and with often scant regard for technique, he plunged headlong into a musical form that defied categorization and dismayed orthodox musicologists. Especially aware of the blues, Coleman eschewed a rigid structure in the music and favoured instead explorations of its poetic content. Free jazz to Coleman and his followers was jazz freed not only from musical restraints but also from sociological and cultural parameters. This album demonstrates his radicalism and his awareness of both past and future jazz.

Bobby Hutcherson – The Kicker

null

The same personnel who performed on Grant Green’s classic Idle Moments session in November 1963 reconvened for Bobby Hutcherson’s first recording as a leader one month later. The Kicker, however, was never released and waited more than 35 years to see the light of day. Thanks to reissue king Michael Cuscuna, we are now finally able to hear this swinging disc and marvel at yet another example of Hutcherson’s brilliance. Although this session is a bit more conservative than Dialogue, Hutcherson’s original released debut, this is an exquisite capsule of the Blue Note era and a crisp performance by all. Many of the tunes here have been recorded in various forms by other Blue Note artists, but this ensemble gives each cut its own distinctive treatment. Joe Henderson’s title track and “Step Lightly” are excellent examples of familiar tunes that are given a new flavor by this long-buried treasure of a disc. Also included is an energetic reading of the standard “If Ever I Would Leave You” and Joe Chamber’s “Mirrors,” both of which feature remarkable work by Hutcherson in his early development.
