Mario Pavone – Orange

null

Bassist/composer/bandleader Mario Pavone has a stellar reputation among fans of avant-garde jazz, particularly given his years as bassist for the Thomas Chapin Trio. But Pavone’s agreeable music should hold appeal for listeners of both inside and outside persuasions, from those enamored of hard bop and post-bop through to those favoring more open-ended styles of jazz exploration. Orange, released on the Playscape label during fall 2003, features Pavone’s trio with regular collaborator, pianist Peter Madsen, and now with Michigan transplant Gerald Cleaver in the drummer’s chair, augmented by the killer chops of trumpeter Steven Bernstein and tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby on five tracks. Trumpeter Bernstein energizes the quintet tracks, three of which he arranged. The Sex Mobster invites comparison here to such acclaimed New York trumpet compatriots as Dave Douglas and Herb Robertson, unleashing flurries of notes on “Drop Op” and “Goorootoo,” and ending his lines with punchy exclamation points on “Blue Rex,” the opening number that bops, swings, and struts, setting a strong pace that doesn’t let up for the rest of the disc. The spirit of Chapin continues to imbue Pavone’s work, explicitly on the lengthy “Sky Tango,” which begins ruminatively, but soon picks up steam and rhythmically opens, skirting free jazz territories and providing both Malaby and Madsen opportunities to soar. And Cleaver proves his ability to bond with a bassist through the twists and turns of arrangements that manage somehow to be simultaneously knotty and swinging. Echoes of the past come together movingly on “Burnt Sweet Orange,” as Bernstein and Malaby float bluesy call-and-response statements that lead into a loose stuttering vamp from the core trio, suggesting that the ghost of Mingus could very well be hovering over the proceedings along with Chapin. But ultimately, this disc belongs to Pavone, of course, as the composer and deep force who drives the music forward. Orange deserves space on the shelf next to classic Blue Note, Prestige, and Riverside releases, as well as jazz discs of more recent vintage from New World, Tzadik, and Knitting Factory, not to mention Playscape.

Earl Turbinton – Brothers For Life

Brothers Earl Turbinton and Willie Tee approach music from different perspectives; saxophonist Earl’s spiritual, uncompromising modern jazz playing is complemented by keyboard player Willie’s tendencies toward pure funk, and they’re both exceptionally gifted players. Here is modern jazz with a New Orleans flavor at its very best.

Enrico Rava – The Words And The Days

null

Enrico Rava’s 2004 outing, Easy Living, marked not only his return to the ECM label after a 17-year absence, but the complete maturation of his quintet, which at that time had been gigging together for four years. The Words and the Days sees most of the same band return with one major chair: Rava’s great foil, pianist Stefano Bollani who released his acclaimed solo piano album on the label, has been replaced by the fluid, more percussive Andrea Pozza. The program consists of seven Rava originals, a cover of Don Cherry’s “Art Deco” performed as a wonderfully warm and spirited duet with trombonist Gianluca Petrella, one each by drummer Roberto Gatto (“Traps”), and bassist Rosario Bonaccorso (“Sogni Proibiti” ["Forbidden Dreams"]), and a version of Russ Freeman’s “The Wind,” written as a vehicle for the late Chet Baker. Typical of this quintet recording, Rava digs into the jazz tradition and brings to it his lyrical gift as a composer, an improvising soloist and an arranger. His reading of “The Wind” is a fine example. Keeping Baker’s sparseness in phrase, he infuses it with the echoing presence of Petrella, playing just a shade behind the melody, and then playing only parts of it and adding a bit of humor and drama to the work to make it a bit noir-ish rather than a straight nostalgia piece. Gatto’s dancing brush work adds to the present tense understanding of the tune and is underscored by Pozza’s painterly piano lines. Only the bassline by Bonaccorso keeps the tune rooted in history.

Conversely, “Echoes of Duke,” which immediately proceeds from it, is a firm case in point of Rava’s view of jazz tradition as living in the present and pointing to the future. Using the scuttlebutt rhythmic impulses of the Jimmy Blanton-Ben Webster band and the lyric improvisation of Ellington’s great brass frontliners, Rava nonetheless moves the tune just outside enough to be a new and sprightly read on the blues. “Serpent” is an abstract piece that roots itself in the skeletal remnants of Miles Davis’ modal period in the mid- to late ’60s. The blues are everywhere present, but they are stretched almost to the breaking point, and Pozza’s commanding, empathic solo here is nearly breathtaking. The final piece, the nine-minute “Dr. Ra and Mr. Va,” is the best example of the ensemble’s inner dialogue, wrapping a minimal chart in grand poetic designs. Rava’s solo offers hints as to where he wants the band to go, and they don’t just follow, they end up on the frontline with him. It begins so warm and leisurely it’s deceptive. There is a lot of spatial organizing going on here. Despite the chart, there are moments of improvisation happening in the lyric, and in its harmonic interpolation by Pozza and then Petrella. The tune is like a Möbius strip, changing places with itself throughout its length. Once more, Rava dazzles with his grasp of the languages of jazz: its textures, its rhythms, its dynamics and above all, of course, its secretive and inventive melodic improvisation. There is no let down here from Easy Living; The Words and the Days is a worthy companion that confidently stands not in the previous recording’s shadow, but on a ledge of its own.

Prince Phillip Mitchell – Make it Good

null

The long-overdue full length debut from Phillip Mitchell — an artist who cut some great singles over the course of the 70s, and also wrote a fair bit of classics for other, bigger name acts! Phillip did some of his earlier work of the decade in both Memphis and Muscle Shoals — but he also had a key relationship with Norman Connors as well, who helped Mitchell take his southern roots into even more sophisticated soul territory! Mitchell produced the album himself — and arranged with Paul Riser and McKinley Jackson — and the overall sound is a wonderful blend of deeply personal vocals with smoother mellow soul grooves — a really top-shelf affair all the way through, and the kind of album that’s only finally getting its due many years later! Tracks include “Star in the Ghetto”, “You’re All I Got In the World”, “Falling From Heaven”, and “If I Can’t Be Your Man”. CD also features the bonus track “What Part Of Heaven Do You Come From”.

Marion Brown – Vista

null

Altoist Marion Brown, one of the potentially great high-energy saxophonists to emerge in the mid-’60s (he was on John Coltrane’s famous Ascension record), has had somewhat of a directionless career. This disc certainly boasts an impressive backup crew (including both Anthony Davis and Stanley Cowell on keyboards along with bassist Reggie Workman and some appearances by drummer Ed Blackwell) but does not seem to know what it wants to be. The solos are relatively short, there is a poppish vocal by Allen Murphy on a Stevie Wonder tune and little that is all that memorable actually occurs. Better to acquire Marion Brown’s earlier recordings.

Henry Franklin – Skipper At Home

null

Jazz bassist Henry Franklin was born in 1940, the son of West Coast jazz trumpeter Sammy Franklin. Henry Franklin began his own career while he was still in high school, playing with his contemporary, Roy Ayers, in the latter’s Latin jazz quintet. This experience put Franklin on the path to his work with Latin jazz bandleader and percussionist Willie Bobo. His work with Bobo in New York also led to Franklin’s playing with Archie Shepp.

Franklin later played with Hugh Masekela, appearing on the latter’s number one single, “Grazing in the Grass,” and the album Promise of a Future (1968), which was among Franklin’s earliest official recording credits (and was one of the bigger-selling jazz albums of 1968). He got further exposure from his work with Masekela when Franklin played in the band that the South African-born trumpet player brought to the Monterey International Pop Festival in June of 1967 — their appearance there was immortalized in the D.A. Pennebaker documentary film of the event, Monterey Pop.

In the decades since, Franklin — often referred to as “the Skipper” — has played and recorded with Gene Harris & the Three Sounds, Freddie Hubbard, Bobbi Humphrey, Hampton Hawes, et al., as well as releasing a brace of albums by his own band right into the 21st century.

Declaime – Fonk

null

Filled with crooked, broken funk and positive lyrics, some beamed in from deep space, Fonk is Declaime’s — aka Dudley Perkins — wild vision of a crossover record. It is so wild that he acts as if this effort could top Thriller during the highlight “Warrior,” which addresses MJ’s recent passing with “Moonwalk look like a million miles high/Yeah, he was OK and his moves were fine/Now it’s time for me to go for mine.” The left-field rapper’s grand vision of hip-hop domination involves a mutated resurrection of the West Coast G-funk sound created by the album’s sole producer, Quazedelic, a kindred spirit for Declaime, as he can talk third eyes and pyramid power for as long as you’d care to listen. Like everything Declaime does, there are moments of transcendence and moments of great clarity here, the latter being as simple as “Dad”‘s fantastic line “Kids: It ain’t about you anymore.” Elsewhere, fatherhood is addressed with “Sippin’ on a cold glass of water, reminiscing about the birth of my daughter/Little Miss Sunshine, how she made me a father/Drove my life down, made it a little less harder/Whole lot broader, way much wider,” possibly the most beautiful set of lyrics in the rapper’s catalog. Georgia Anne Muldrow is a welcome guest on the three tracks she lights up, especially the great “Dreamer,” which sincerely wishes “May all your dreams come true/May all the sadness and madness be through.” Hard to believe the mind-expanding rapper could offer an album that’s so effectively comforting and hopeful, but Fonk is just that. If you like your positive vibes all squiggly and challenging, this odd re-imaging of G-funk is the first step toward a better tomorrow.

He joined more than 100 album as a producer, composer, pianist. He was a leader of izanami that are soul band. After that,He belongs to the band called JAMNUTS which is a project of Top 30 professional players in Tokyo. the Japanese artist who first grabbed our ears with the chunky funk of his debut — stepping out here as a much more fully-formed soul producer! The album’s title is well-put — as 45 brings a wide range of soul elements into play here — getting help from guests who include Stephanie McKay, Ryan Shaw, Marcellus Nealy, Jimmy Abney, and Suji Tap — all of whom flesh out the sound, and make for an album of really well-developed grooves! There’s still plenty of funk in the rhythms, but the instrumentation’s tighter too — instrumental soul at some points, and vocal soul at others — yet always with that kind of hip spin that we’ve come to love from Japanese artists over the past decade or so. Titles include “I Believe”, “Mysterious Journey”, “Another Place”, “Right Now”, “Big Man Hunting”, “Soul 2 Sole”, “Que Chevere”, “The Revenge Of Soul”, “The Dawn”, and “Nothing Feels Better Than You”.

Suite for Ma Dukes – Untitled/Fantastic (Georgia Anne Muldrow Remix)

FULL SCREEN
The Sounds of VTech / Georgia Anne Muldrow Remix: Untitled/Fantastic

Untitled/Fantastic Remixed: Georgia Anne Muldrow featuring Nokware.

Remixing Suite for Ma Dukes is a brave undertaking.  Several producers and MCs at first accepted and then declined the job.  In the end we think we got the right person.  It is with great pleasure on the week of Mothers Day to release this remix.  Done while mothering by none other than Georgia Ann Muldrow.  This project began as an homage to one mothers love (Ma Dukes) and has now been remixed by another (Georgia) with her son Nokware in her lap.  Two incredible women, one amazing track. Remixed.

Georgia who has done production for Erykah Badu, Mos Def and partner Dudley Perkins was an amazing person to watch at work.  Her feel is so hers.  She seemed so comfortable with the music.  She insisted that she didn’t want to chop the song but to play along as if she was there in the Orchestra.  We wanted her to sing on the track too but her microphone was in the shop for repairs – so on my suggestion she sang the vocals into the lavalier tie clip mic that we used to capture sound for the video.

This remix and the two others we have released here: Te’Amir and Jneiro will be available on a Timeless Remixed EP this Summer.

Enjoy.  Turn it up.

Mindesign – Lights and Tunnels

null

Born in San Diego, California, Mind spent his early years submerged in musicianship. “My uncle was a drummer and my pops played a little bit of guitar. I was real young at the time, so my memory’s a bit fuzzy, but if there’s anything I can remember, it was always being in the garage playing with the drum set. I always had a thing for drums…something about the boom bap.” After making the move to the east coast at the age of 6, he somewhat drifted away from that musical atmosphere, only to be reunited with it in his middle – high school years where he observed his older brother making beats with FruityLoops. Fully embracing the beat making culture, Mind stayed focused, diligently perfecting his craft. As time passed, it was becoming more apparent that his passion was destined for the world to appreciate. Drawing influences from a multitude of musical genres (classic rock, funk, soul, progressive jazz, electronic, & obvious hip hop producers), he strives to maintain purity in self-expression. Mind’s pieces seem to embody an organic feel, taking you on a spiritual vacation through strong buildups and complex motifs. Equipped with cosmic textures & soulful harmonies, he invites you to open your ears, as well as your heart. “If there’s anything I’m looking to achieve through my music, it’s reminding folks that Love is all you need.”

Panacea – 12 Step Program

Panacea is based out of the Washington DC area where producer K-Murdock, a Maryland native, has provided his fantasy hip-hop soundscapes for soul singers such as Grammy-nominated R&B artist, Raheem DeVaughn.

Emcee Raw Poetic, a long time resident of Northern Virginia who originally hails from Philadelphia, has been rhyming since the age of 14. His natural, almost conversational flow and signature storytelling lyrics fit perfectly with K-Murdock’s soulful and sometimes spacey compositions.

Their obvious chemistry is incredibly rare, and favors such accomplished duos as Gangstarr and Pete Rock & CL Smooth. Whether they’re in the studio composing music or on stage performing live, Panacea has all musical bases covered!
