Funky funky Finland! Don’t be put off by the long name, or the overuse of vowels in the title — because this album’s a killer batch of funky jazz, filled with loads of choppy sax riffs, sweet Fender Rhodes licks, and plenty of heavy drums. The record’s got a hard fusion groove — and all the tracks are long instrumentals served up with plenty of power, and plenty of ferocity! The set was recorded in Finland in 1972, but it feels more like some killer studio jam from the west coast — played by by a very tight bunch of funky jazz musicians who weren’t afraid to go over the top. Titles include “Hot C”, “7 Up”, “6 Down”, “Suite 19″, and “Wahoo!”

Sweet and jazzy pop from early 70s Brazil — a great little album that we’d rank with our favorites by Marcos Valle and Edu Lobo! Arthur Verocai isn’t nearly as well-known as those two, but he works in a similar territory — taking jazz, large arrangements, and nice touches of electric funk — and working them into a groove that has the soaring and ambitious feel of the best post-Tropicalia work of 70s Brazil! This rare gem was self-produced, and fell of the map almost as soon as it was released — but it really deserves wider recognition, and shines with a depth that makes it an instant classic to our ears! Titles include “Presente Grego”, “Caboclo”, “Pelas Sombras”, “O Mapa”, “Sylvia”, “Karina”, “Velho Parente”, and “Dedicada A Ela”.

One of three Donald Byrd albums from 1967 (the end of his hard bop period), this recording features the trumpeter/leader with altoist Sonny Red, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Billy Higgins. The six tunes (five of which are originals by Byrd or Red) are all quite obscure and to one extent or another quite explorative. One can sense that Byrd wanted to break through the boundaries and rules of hard bop but had not yet decided on his future directions. The music does swing and highlights include “West of the Pecos” and “Beale Street”; Byrd and Red in particular are in excellent form throughout the date.

Formed in the mid-’60s, the Chicago-based funk and soul band Pieces of Peace certainly had the potential and manpower to reach nationwide success. The group originated around brothers Bernard and Danny Reed, who, thanks to Danny’s connection to Carl Davis, soon began working with the former OKeh producer and A&R rep on his new label, Brunswick Records, and new band JaLynne Sound, alongside drummer Quinton Joseph and songwriters Eugene Record and Barbara Acklin. Things began to take off in 1967 when trumpeter Michael Davis (who later played with Earth, Wind & Fire and Phil Collins, sometimes under the name Rahm Lee) and alto saxophonist Jerry Wilson joined up and the quintet recorded “Soulful Strut” — a song that was then used by and credited to Young-Holt Unlimited — and soon after went on tour with other Brunswick artists. On the way, drummer Harold “Heavy” Nesbitt replaced Joseph, guitarist John Bishop came on, and co-founder Danny Reed left, unhappy with the lack of control he felt he had.

As it turned out, the entire band was unhappy with the way Carl Davis was leading things, and after spending some time backing Gene Chandler, they broke ties with Brunswick and Davis, changed their name to Pieces of Peace, and moved across town to Twinight, home of Syl Johnson. There, as the house band, the group recorded and helped produce singles not only for Johnson but also for Josephine Taylor, Annette Poindexter, and Elvin Spencer. In 1971, with the help of new drummer Fred White (who also went on to play with Earth, Wind & Fire) and singer King Johnson, Pieces of Peace released their first record, “Pass It On, Pts. 1-2.” By now well established in the Windy City, the band brought on keyboardist Benjamin Wright (who would later do the string arrangements for artists like Michael and Janet Jackson) and worked closely with compatriots the Pharaohs, who had their own label, Scarab. And it was with this label that Pieces of Peace made their first and only attempt at a full-length record.

With yet another new drummer, Fred Crutchfield, flutist Joel Brandon, and help from Pharaohs members like Willie Woods, Derf Recklaw-Raheem, and Aaron Dodd, an album was recorded in 1972. The accompanying tour, however, proved to be too much for the band; they broke up in Singapore and the self-titled Scarab record was shelved indefinitely. It wasn’t until famed crate-digger DJ Shadow and funk and soul experts Dante Carfagna and Rob Sevier found the LP and a label willing to re-release it (Quannum) that the general public was able to hear Pieces of Peace in the fall of 2007 (though the song “Pass It On, Pt. 1″ made it on to soul-reviver Numero Group’s March 2007 Eccentric Soul compilation, Twinight’s Lunar Rotation).

A marvelous bandleader and organist as well as capable arranger, “Brother” Jack McDuff has one of the funkiest, most soulful styles of all time on the Hammond B-3. His rock-solid basslines and blues-drenched solos are balanced by clever, almost pianistic melodies and interesting progressions and phrases. McDuff began as a bassist playing with Denny Zeitlin and Joe Farrell. He studied privately in Cincinnati and worked with Johnny Griffin in Chicago. He taught himself organ and piano in the mid-’50s, and began gaining attention working with Willis Jackson in the late ’50s and early ’60s, cutting high caliber soul-jazz dates for Prestige. McDuff made his recording debut as a leader for Prestige in 1960, playing in a studio pickup band with Jimmy Forrest. They made a pair of outstanding albums: Tough Duff and The Honeydripper. McDuff organized his own band the next year, featuring Harold Vick and drummer Joe Dukes. Things took off when McDuff hired a young guitarist named George Benson. They were among the most popular combos of the mid-’60s and made several excellent albums. McDuff’s later groups at Atlantic and Cadet didn’t equal the level of the Benson band, while later dates for Verve and Cadet were uneven, though generally good. McDuff experimented with electronic keyboards and fusion during the ’70s, then in the ’80s got back in the groove with the Muse session Cap’n Jack. While his health fluctuated throughout the ’90s, McDuff released several discs on the Concord Jazz label before succumbing to heart failure on January 23, 2001, at the age of 74.

Jazz bassist Henry Franklin was born in 1940, the son of West Coast jazz trumpeter Sammy Franklin. Henry Franklin began his own career while he was still in high school, playing with his contemporary, Roy Ayers, in the latter’s Latin jazz quintet. This experience put Franklin on the path to his work with Latin jazz bandleader and percussionist Willie Bobo. His work with Bobo in New York also led to Franklin’s playing with Archie Shepp.

Franklin later played with Hugh Masekela, appearing on the latter’s number one single, “Grazing in the Grass,” and the album Promise of a Future (1968), which was among Franklin’s earliest official recording credits (and was one of the bigger-selling jazz albums of 1968). He got further exposure from his work with Masekela when Franklin played in the band that the South African-born trumpet player brought to the Monterey International Pop Festival in June of 1967 — their appearance there was immortalized in the D.A. Pennebaker documentary film of the event, Monterey Pop.

In the decades since, Franklin — often referred to as “the Skipper” — has played and recorded with Gene Harris & the Three Sounds, Freddie Hubbard, Bobbi Humphrey, Hampton Hawes, et al., as well as releasing a brace of albums by his own band right into the 21st century.

Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer.

Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. Many well-known musicians rose to prominence as members of Davis’ ensembles, including saxophonists Gerry Mulligan, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, George Coleman, Wayne Shorter, and Kenny Garrett; trombonist J. J. Johnson; pianists Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett; guitarists John McLaughlin, John Scofield and Mike Stern; bassists Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, and Dave Holland; and drummers Tony Williams, Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette.

On October 7, 2008, his album Kind of Blue, released in 1959, received its fourth platinum certification from the RIAA, signifying sales of 4 million copies. Miles Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Davis was noted as “one of the key figures in the history of jazz”.

On November 5, 2009, Rep. John Conyers of Michigan sponsored a measure in the US House of Representatives to recognize and commemorate the album Kind of Blue on its 50th anniversary. The measure also affirms jazz as a national treasure and “encourages the United States government to preserve and advance the art form of jazz music.” It passed, unanimously, with a vote of 409–0 on December 15, 2009.

Composite Truth is Mandrill’s most successful album, commercially as well as artistically. Although the band’s sense of freewheeling experimentation had been tempered, its gradual transition to a straight-ahead funk band was made perfect with two of the biggest hits of its career: “Hang Loose” and “Fencewalk.” “Hang Loose” is all over the place (in a good way), moving from a grooving funk jam to mid-tempo guitar skronk and back, all part of an impassioned call to peace. “Fencewalk” also had several transitions, with a crooning chorus and an extended middle section powered by heavy brass and a screaming guitar solo. Elsewhere, Mandrill turns in a very convincing impression of a salsa band (“Hágalo”), breaks into killer loose-groove funk (“Don’t Mess With People,” with a splendidly undecipherable vocal), and stumbles only with the long, rasta-fied San Francisco tribute “Polk Street Carnival,” featuring a bass part that would make even a student smirk. (For such a strong band, Mandrill’s basslines were often uncharacteristically weak.) In the main, the songs on Composite Truth were catchier than on its first two albums, and the band never appeared subservient to the sense of experimentation that had troubled it before. Even if on Composite Truth Mandrill sounded more like other funk bands of the time, no one could argue with the fact that the results were more exciting and consistent.
