This is the soundtrack for a 1970 Italian film that played out the romantically charged story of a couple coming apart against a sultry tropical island locale. Fittingly, composer Piero Umiliani’s score mixes jazzy romanticism with strong tropical rhythms to create a score that is both lush and exotic. It is built on one main theme, “Pelle Di Luna,” a hypnotic tune that is seductive and bittersweet all at once. This theme is repeated through the majority of the cues. This could have resulted in a dull score, but Umiliani makes it work because he consistently takes the theme in new and interesting musical directions through imaginative arrangements; the many forms it takes on include an acoustic guitar theme with chorus, a solo organ piece, a mellow instrumental built on steel guitar, and a full orchestral version that mixes layers of the vocal chorus over swirling strings.

A brilliantly soulful set from the PE Hewitt Jazz Ensemble – an early 70s group with a style that mixes the sunny and the spiritual! Hewitt’s group works at a level that’s definitely in line with some of our favorite indie jazz at the time – really pushing the boundaries with a great sense of spirit – stretching out towards new ideas, yet never getting too free or too outside to lose their sense of swing. But at another level, there’s a slightly groovy undercurrent to the record too – one that comes from the wordless vocals of singer Nina Scheller, whose style reminds us a bit of the singing on the Sound Of Feeling record with Oliver Nelson – particularly given the modal grooves on the best numbers here. Rhythms are really in the lead at the album’s strongest points – driven by Phil Hewitt’s work on piano and vibes, and topped with alto sax and flugelhorn too.

Hancock’s best-known solo works include “Cantaloupe Island”, “Watermelon Man” (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), “Maiden Voyage”, “Chameleon”, and the singles “I Thought It Was You” and “Rockit”. His 2007 tribute album “River: The Joni Letters” won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

Pianist Oscar Peterson joins up with his old friends, vibraphonist Milt Jackson and bassist Ray Brown, in addition to his drummer of the period, Louis Hayes, for a particularly enjoyable outing. After a throwaway version of the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” the all-star quartet performs Jackson’s title cut, Benny Carter’s ballad “Dream of You,” and four standards. Although not up to the excitement of Peterson’s best Pablo recordings of the 1970s, this is an enjoyable album.

In addition to forming the group and composing many of their songs, they were the two constant members in the group, as many musicians passed through. One of the most famous to pass through was bassists Jaco Pastorius. Pastorius was a pioneer on the electric bass. He took it from a rhythm instrument into an important solo instrument by playing with speed and grace, often dazzling audiences with his virtuosity during unaccompanied solos . He created a slippery effect by using a fretless bass. He has influenced countless bass players to this day. He joined Weather Report in 1976 and left in 1982, forming his own group Word of Mouth. Aside from a tremendous ego, he was alcoholic and a heroine addict. He died tragically in 1987 after he instigated a fight at a bar and suffered head injuries.

Unlike many groups, Weather Report focused on a group sound, creating complex arrangements in addition to their improvised solos, which made it more difficult to distinguish between the soloist and accompanists, because they were virtuosos on their instruments, providing awe-inspiring solos, as well as accompaniment work.

The group originally included Miroslav Vitous, percussionist Airto Moreira and drummer Alphonze Mauzon. Their self-titled debut album, as well as their follow-up I sing the Body Electric, are jazz-rock classics. However, their greatest line-up was in the mid 70s when Pastorious and drummer Peter Erskine joined. This line-up put out the fine records Black Market, Mr. Gone, and Heavy Weather, which was their biggest selling album and included their most famous hit Birdland). After Erskine and Pastorious left, they were replaced by Omar Hakim and Victor Bailey, respectively. While they were fine musicians, they lacked the flamboyance and imagination as their predecessors, Their records afterward, were polished, yet detached and lacked the fire of the early works. Shorter and Zawinul disbanded the group in 1987. In 1996, rumors circulated that the Shorter and Zawinul would reunite the group, but it never happened.

While many fusion groups only lasted a few years, Weather Report lasted over fifteen.

Enrico Rava, born in Trieste in 1939, is undoubtedly the most internationally acknowledged Italian jazzman. In forty years of his career as trumpet player, and composer, he has produced more than hundred recordings, thirty of which as a leader. “Il Giro Del Giorno in 80 Mondi” his first album as a leader Recorded in February 1972 at Fonit-Cetra Studios, Turin.

Randy Weston’s most popular record, this Lp (which he had mixed feelings about) features Weston not only on piano but electric keyboards. Backed by Don Sebesky arrangements and assisted by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and tenor-saxophonist Grover Washington Jr., Weston plays quite well on four of his compositions; best-known are “Ganawa (Blue Moses)” and “Marrakesh Blues.” The music retains the African feel of most of Weston’s latter-day playing but also has some commercial touches that do not hurt the performances.

Black is the Color (of My True Love’s Mind): the holy effin’ grail of this era.  Core tracks recorded by Cables, Holland, & DeJohnette, then extensively overdubbing, including David Horowitz’ synthesizer, George Wadenius’ electric guitar, Airto’s percussion, & even a turn from DeJohnette on electric piano.  From the opening cut, the 12 minute “Terra Firma”, you know you’ve died & gone to Kozmigroov heaven.  Very similar to Miles of this era in terms of sonic overload, but more intricate & complex overall.  But it grooves like a motherfucker, too!  Great beyond words.  “Vis-a-Vis” is the only straight cut (no overdubs), but it just serves to nicely link to the past & show what a smoking session they had to play w/in the studio! “Foregone Conclusion” is a nice hard funk cut, intensely soulful, that quickly heads out into the stratosphere w/distorto-sax & electrobleepage aplenty.  “Black is the Color” is a pretty, layered ballad w/plenty of intense peaks; but proves to be the calm before the storm that is “Current Events”.  It starts w/some spooky electronic atmospherics & rain jungle percussion, some excellent quizzical bass soloing from Holland plays against the increasingly wild analog synth washes & pans, then Henderson comes in echoing & raging & everyone plays beautifully off of each other up to several stunningly wild finales.  One of the peak musical events of my life.
