Isotope was a British jazz fusion band based around guitarist Gary Boyle.

Boyle founded the band in June 1972 and a first album, Isotope, was largely composed by keyboardist Brian Miller. Jeff Clyne was on bass and Nigel Morris was on drums. However, Miller and Clyne left in 1974 to be replaced by Hugh Hopper and Laurence Scott (b. 7 Feb 1946) respectively. After touring, this new line-up recorded Illusion. Further touring followed and there were various personnel changes. Deep End was recorded in 1976 with two keyboardists, Zoe Kronberger and Frank Roberts. Hopper played on one track, but the bass was otherwise handled by Dan K. Brown. Boyle subsequently focused on a solo career.

An excellent bit of soulful post-Coltrane jazz! The group is a sextet led by Italian trumpeter Sergio Fanni — and it features piano and electric piano by Sante Palumbo, plus tenor, drums, electric bass, and percussion. In a way, the album reminds us a lot of early 70s work by American groups like The Bridgewater Brothers or The Visitors — in that it’s got a free style of blowing on some of the introductions and introspective moments, but slams into a hard modal groove for the bulk of the tracks. Fanni’s solo work is especially great, and is filled with the soulful searching of players like Benny Bailey or Cecil Bridgewater, a style that sounds particularly nice over the album’s long piano lines. Titles include “Shade”, “Plan”, “Drive Waltz”, and “Dawn/Suffer”.

One of the coolest Italian soundtracks we’ve heard in a long time — a wonderful set of tunes that moves from slinky, to easy, to groovy, and beyond! The tunes start out bubbling very spare and slow — with floating piano, moog, and other nice bits — and as the record progresses, the sound gets heavier, with some nice funky elements thrown into the mix! The whole thing’s a brilliant exercise in understatement — not only one of the best soundtracks by Umiliani from the 70s, but also a perfect example of why we dig Italian soundtracks so much! Titles include “Volto Di Donna”, “La Prima Uscita”, “La Rinuncia”, “Senza Tregua”, “Nostalgia”, “The Party”, and “Maryam”.

A sexy Euro soundtrack from the 70s — penned for a film that’s apparently filled with lots of scantily clad showgirls! The style is totally sweet — often heavy on the keyboards, or on the strings — slightly slinky one minute, then soaring to the skies in a Love Unlimited Orchestra mode the next. Most numbers are relatively short, but manage to groove nicely — and a few numbers break from the porn and disco overtones to hit some slightly more playful melodies from an older Italian comedic period. Edda Dell’Orso sings a bit on the record — and Gianni Dell’Orso plays keyboards and directs the orchestra.

Great stuff — a lot better than you’d think, and a masterful set of soul jazz tunes! Horace’s piano is augmented by a larger group here, which, despite the “brass” in the title, is actually a fairly decent batch of musicians, with a wide range of instrumentation. The group includes Bernard Purdie, Jerome Richardson, Bobby Bryant, Bob Cranshaw, and Oscar Brashear — and titles include “The Sophisticated Hippie”, “Dameron’s Dance”, “Barbara”, and “Kissin’ Cousins”. And, although not from Horace’s classic 60′s period, the record (like all of his Blue Notes) is not without some very nice moments!

A great little album of jazz funk — and the only record we’ve ever seen by this group! The 3 Pieces may not have lasted long in the record business, but this rare album from 1975 has made them legends on the rare groove scene for years. The record was cut during the height of the jazz funk years at Fantasy Records — and it features Donald Byrd handling the production chores, in a similar manner to the style that he used with the more famous Blackbyrds, who were also recording for Fantasy the time. The record features loads of electric piano and ARP, plus some tight and smooth guitar, and a nice rolling groove that is very catchy. A number of tracks have vocals — in kind of a subdued soul mode — and tracks include the groove classics “Backed Up Against The Wall”, “Shortnin Bread”, “Concrete Jungle”, and “Vibes Of Truth”. And believe it or not, there aren’t any vibes on the album!

Altoist Marion Brown, one of the potentially great high-energy saxophonists to emerge in the mid-’60s (he was on John Coltrane’s famous Ascension record), has had somewhat of a directionless career. This disc certainly boasts an impressive backup crew (including both Anthony Davis and Stanley Cowell on keyboards along with bassist Reggie Workman and some appearances by drummer Ed Blackwell) but does not seem to know what it wants to be. The solos are relatively short, there is a poppish vocal by Allen Murphy on a Stevie Wonder tune and little that is all that memorable actually occurs. Better to acquire Marion Brown’s earlier recordings.

Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer.

Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. Many well-known musicians rose to prominence as members of Davis’ ensembles, including saxophonists Gerry Mulligan, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, George Coleman, Wayne Shorter, and Kenny Garrett; trombonist J. J. Johnson; pianists Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett; guitarists John McLaughlin, John Scofield and Mike Stern; bassists Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, and Dave Holland; and drummers Tony Williams, Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette.

On October 7, 2008, his album Kind of Blue, released in 1959, received its fourth platinum certification from the RIAA, signifying sales of 4 million copies. Miles Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Davis was noted as “one of the key figures in the history of jazz”.

On November 5, 2009, Rep. John Conyers of Michigan sponsored a measure in the US House of Representatives to recognize and commemorate the album Kind of Blue on its 50th anniversary. The measure also affirms jazz as a national treasure and “encourages the United States government to preserve and advance the art form of jazz music.” It passed, unanimously, with a vote of 409–0 on December 15, 2009.

Smooth jazzy soul from this massively overlooked group from the 70s! Although many know their bigger recordings on Sussex, these Polydor sides are much more appealing to us, and have a nice jazzy soul sound that’s similar to work of groups like Side Effect — with a mixture of harmony soul and more complicated arrangements, touched by a bit of funk, and some more sophisticated modern soul production. This LP includes an excellent funky cut called “Funky Luvah”, plus the tracks “Pass The Feelin On”, “Turn On To Music”, “Don’t Be Afraid”, and “I Want Ya (Loving Me)”.
