Don Patterson – Why Not…
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1978, Jazz

Don was born in Columbus, Ohio, July 22, 1936. He’s now living in Philadelphia, a city that is a mecca for artists, as well as a stronghold for organist Jimmy Smith, Jimmy McGriff, Trudy Pitts, just to name a few. “Fats” Waller in the late 1930′s was one of the firt to use the rogan as a jazz instrument. This is the fourth Don Patterson album on Muse Records. Don Patterson is not only a master organist, but also a talented compose. There are three of his orginals on this album. He uses the melodic, harmonic and rhythimic lines in their proper colors. Tonal colors are important when playing or mastering the organ.
Personnel: Don Patterson (Organist); Bootsi Barnes (Tenor Saxophone); Eddie McFadden (Guitar); Idris Muhammad (Drums); Virgil Jones (Trumpet).

Sun Ra – Lanquidity
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1978, Jazz

By the time this album was recorded in 1978, Sun Ra and his Arkestra had been living in Philadelphia for a decade. They journeyed to New York City to record this project for the Philly Jazz Label. The rhythmic bearing of the music, as well as Sun Ra’s use of a Fender Rhodes electric piano (especially on the nine-and-a-half minute “Twin Stars Of Thence”), align this music with some of the post-Bitches Brew releases by Miles Davis. Ra even brought along two electric guitarists for the date, Dale Williams and Disco Kid. As late ’70s fusion-flavored jazz goes, this stands up extremely well, with its rhythmic sensibilities harking back with gusto to earlier decades in the century. The album closer is the chant-filled “There Are Other Worlds (They Have Not Told You Of)”–11 minutes of ever-undulating and gently propulsive groove. Ra’s piano playing is gorgeously ethereal on this number.

Chick Corea – Friends
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1978, Jazz

After his days as the leader of the highly successful fusion group Return To Forever, Chick Corea turned to a more traditional style in his solo career. Friends from 1978 features elements of swing, Latin music and the sensitive intimacy inherent in a small acoustic ensemble. And what an ensemble it is; no less than Joe Farrell (reeds, flute), Eddie Gomez (bass) and Steve Gadd (drums) are on hand to masterfully interpret Corea’s dynamic compositions. The results are nothing less than magnificent.
It takes little time to hear why these four virtuosos were the most in-demand musicians of their era. The opening “The One Step” offers a caressing melody by Corea on the Fender Rhodes piano, opening up into a tight, swinging solo section driven by the inimitable Gadd. The flowing “Waltz for Dave,” a tribute to Dave Brubeck, swings lightly as Farrell turns in a spectacular flute performance. Things really start to burn on “Samba Song,” a muscular Latin piece that each member executes impressively. Likewise, the fast-paced “Sicily” is a fiery samba that displays Corea’s knack for the genre. The session closes with the stunning “Cappucino,” a modern bebop tune that could only have been performed by this sensational group of Friends.

Herbert Jeffrey “Herbie” Hancock (born April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American pianist, bandleader and composer. As part of Miles Davis’s “second great quintet”, Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was one of the primary architects of the “post-bop” sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk. Hancock’s music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs “cross over” and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Hancock’s best-known solo works include “Cantaloupe Island”, “Watermelon Man” (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), “Maiden Voyage”, “Chameleon”, and the singles “I Thought It Was You” and “Rockit”. His 2007 tribute album “River: The Joni Letters” won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

The Crusaders Albums!

In 1961, four fellows from Houston transplanted themselves to Los Angeles and added more distinctly bluesy elements to the soul jazz style with an ear-grabbing album called The Freedom Sound on the Pacific Jazz label. The band, which had been known in turn as the Swingsters, the Modern Jazz Sextet, and the Nighthawks, was now named the Jazz Crusaders. Its four co-leaders were trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxophonist (and occasional bassist) Wilton Felder, pianist Joe Sample, and drummer Nesbert “Stix” Hooper.
The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacific Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces, the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical background for a Ford Mustang TV commercial.
But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they decided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements.
If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such albums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (recorded variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979.
The Crusaders’ popularity started to fade in the early Eighties, prompted by Henderson’s departure. Hooper then left as well, and by the early Nineties Sample and Felder had disbanded the group. A few years later, Henderson and Felder began performing together, first as the New Crusaders and, more recently, as the Jazz Crusaders.

Weather Report Albums!

Weather Report was one of the earliest and most influential Jazz-Rock groups. Keyboardist Joe Zawinul and saxophone player Wayne Shorter formed the group in 1971. Both had spent in time in Miles Davis’ group – Shorter played with the legendary 1960s quintet (along with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams). Zawinul joined later, during the early days when Davis pioneered the fusion movement. Zawinul was one of the early masters of the synthesizer. Before joining Davis’ group, he played electric piano in the Cannonball Adderly quintet. The sound so impressed Davis, that he hired Zawinul and made future keyboard players play the instrument.
In addition to forming the group and composing many of their songs, they were the two constant members in the group, as many musicians passed through. One of the most famous to pass through was bassists Jaco Pastorius. Pastorius was a pioneer on the electric bass. He took it from a rhythm instrument into an important solo instrument by playing with speed and grace, often dazzling audiences with his virtuosity during unaccompanied solos . He created a slippery effect by using a fretless bass. He has influenced countless bass players to this day. He joined Weather Report in 1976 and left in 1982, forming his own group Word of Mouth. Aside from a tremendous ego, he was alcoholic and a heroine addict. He died tragically in 1987 after he instigated a fight at a bar and suffered head injuries.
Unlike many groups, Weather Report focused on a group sound, creating complex arrangements in addition to their improvised solos, which made it more difficult to distinguish between the soloist and accompanists, because they were virtuosos on their instruments, providing awe-inspiring solos, as well as accompaniment work.
The group originally included Miroslav Vitous, percussionist Airto Moreira and drummer Alphonze Mauzon. Their self-titled debut album, as well as their follow-up I sing the Body Electric, are jazz-rock classics. However, their greatest line-up was in the mid 70s when Pastorious and drummer Peter Erskine joined. This line-up put out the fine records Black Market, Mr. Gone, and Heavy Weather, which was their biggest selling album and included their most famous hit Birdland). After Erskine and Pastorious left, they were replaced by Omar Hakim and Victor Bailey, respectively. While they were fine musicians, they lacked the flamboyance and imagination as their predecessors, Their records afterward, were polished, yet detached and lacked the fire of the early works. Shorter and Zawinul disbanded the group in 1987. In 1996, rumors circulated that the Shorter and Zawinul would reunite the group, but it never happened.
While many fusion groups only lasted a few years, Weather Report lasted over fifteen.

Sun Ra Quartet – New Steps
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1978, Jazz

New Steps is one of several albums done with this basic lineup in January of 1978. This album is billed to the Sun Ra Quartet, but it sounds like there’s a bass player present on at least some of the cuts (it could be Ra, but he’d need three hands). There are two standards amongst a program of Ra originals, and things get started with a stellar version of “My Favorite Things.” The music quickly takes its only sharp turn toward outer space as Ra introduces listeners to “Moon People,” the only track where Ra emphasizes synthesizer over piano. “Sun Steps” is a slow tune featuring some beautiful piano playing from Sun Ra. In fact, the remainder of the album is on the mellow side (“When There Is No Sun” is the only track with vocals), and features some great statements by John Gilmore and Ra. Michael Ray is in fine form as well, if somewhat less exuberant than usual. With such a small group, solo space is ample, and Luqman Ali’s understated drumming really holds things together nicely. New Steps is another fabulous release from Sun Ra, but all the Horo albums can be difficult to find.

Ann Peebles Albums!

Ann Peebles (born April 27, 1947) is a singer and songwriter, best known for her Memphis soul albums of the 1970s on the Hi Records label. Two of her better known songs are “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” and “I Can’t Stand the Rain”, popularised by cover versions by Paul Young and Eruption respectively. “I Can’t Stand the Rain” was written by her husband, Don Bryant, former radio broadcaster, Bernard “Bernie” Miller, and Peebles.
Peebles was discovered as a talent by Gene “Bowlegs” Miller of Hi Records during a 1968 trip to sit in singing with him at a Memphis, Tennessee, nightclub. A popular local bandleader, Miller was known for also helping other musicians, such as members of the Hi Rhythm Section, get their start in the Memphis music industry. Peebles soon began penning and singing hits for the label, co-writing with label staff songwriter Don Bryant, whom she later married in 1974. Peebles released a number of commercially successful and critically well received albums produced by Willie Mitchell on Hi Records throughout the 1970s, until the rise of disco music in the late 1970s took her music out of the limelight. Hi Records was sold in 1977, but Peebles reunited with Willie Mitchell in 1989 to produce her comeback album, Call Me.
In 2006 she released the album Brand New Classics, which consisted of re-recordings of some of her songs in an acoustic style.

Pharoah Sanders – Love Will Find A Way
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1978, Jazz

Once you’ve heard the sound of Pharoah Sanders’ tenor saxophone, you never forget it; impossibly rich and full of overtones, it wrings every bit of emotion out of each note. Pharoah has gained a devoted following since his days with John Coltrane, and his work for Impulse during the early ’70s in particular has been lovingly reissued; however, his albums for Arista in the late ’70s have been out of print for years. One big reason for that is that they are the most controversial of his career; that same devoted fan base could not believe its ears when this free jazz icon went the jazz-funk “quiet storm” route! But the blend—some would say collision—of the two aesthetics produced, on Love Will Find a Way, a unique album that has gained quite the cult following over the years; that it features two other legends in their own right, drummer/producer/singer Norman Connors and vocalist Phyllis Hyman, certainly doesn’t hurt! We’re reissuing this lost classic with original art and new liner notes with quotes from Pharoah.

Brian Bennett – Voyage (A Journey Into Discoid Funk)
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1978, Electronic, Funk

A voyage from Brian Bennett – indeed a trip into disco and funk inspired rhythms, as the subtitle lets us know, but also plenty synthy rock, jazz and proggy elements – a Voyage worth taking from the sound library genius Bennett! The synths and keyboards by Francis Monkman is the secret weapon on this effort for sure – percussionist/producer/arranger Bennett is the guiding force, but the sound of those keys and synths are the neon bright leading light, while Bennett’s percussion and Alan Jone’s bass bring a nice funky bottom end. Titles include “Voyage”, “Solstice”, “Chain Reaction”, “Pendulum Force”, “Air Quake” and “Ocean Glide”.

Prince Phillip Mitchell – Make it Good
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1978, Funk

The long-overdue full length debut from Phillip Mitchell — an artist who cut some great singles over the course of the 70s, and also wrote a fair bit of classics for other, bigger name acts! Phillip did some of his earlier work of the decade in both Memphis and Muscle Shoals — but he also had a key relationship with Norman Connors as well, who helped Mitchell take his southern roots into even more sophisticated soul territory! Mitchell produced the album himself — and arranged with Paul Riser and McKinley Jackson — and the overall sound is a wonderful blend of deeply personal vocals with smoother mellow soul grooves — a really top-shelf affair all the way through, and the kind of album that’s only finally getting its due many years later! Tracks include “Star in the Ghetto”, “You’re All I Got In the World”, “Falling From Heaven”, and “If I Can’t Be Your Man”. CD also features the bonus track “What Part Of Heaven Do You Come From”.

Gil Scott-Heron Albums!

Gil Scott-Heron (born April 1, 1949) is an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his late 1970s and early 1980s work as a spoken word soul performer and his collaborative work with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron’s recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. On his influence, Allmusic wrote “Scott-Heron’s unique proto-rap style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists”.
