This LP of Sun Ra’s from 1979 marks a pinnacle in one of the Arkestra’s most-loved phases, as they embraced a funky, laid-back groove and shuffled through three tracks of upfront bass, electric guitar, spacey Fender Rhodes, and Luqman Ali’s signature late snares. With this rhythmic core, the rest of the Arkestra step up with solos, slightly out of tune harmonies, and vocal chants. ‘Door Of The Cosmos’ kicks the record off at a mid-tempo pace with handclaps, vibraphones, a killer trumpet solo from Michael Ray, and a poetic chorus from June Tyson. But it’s `Springtime Again’ and the title track `Sleeping Beauty’ that really steal the show, so loose that they threaten to fall apart, yet somehow the music holds together as the group rock back and forth like a hammock. It’s testament to Sun Ra as a band leader that he could get such restrained yet emotional performances from the Arkestra, floating in and out of time and tune, on the edge of disintegration.

The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacific Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces, the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical background for a Ford Mustang TV commercial.

But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they decided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements.

If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such albums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (recorded variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979.

The Crusaders’ popularity started to fade in the early Eighties, prompted by Henderson’s departure. Hooper then left as well, and by the early Nineties Sample and Felder had disbanded the group. A few years later, Henderson and Felder began performing together, first as the New Crusaders and, more recently, as the Jazz Crusaders.

In addition to forming the group and composing many of their songs, they were the two constant members in the group, as many musicians passed through. One of the most famous to pass through was bassists Jaco Pastorius. Pastorius was a pioneer on the electric bass. He took it from a rhythm instrument into an important solo instrument by playing with speed and grace, often dazzling audiences with his virtuosity during unaccompanied solos . He created a slippery effect by using a fretless bass. He has influenced countless bass players to this day. He joined Weather Report in 1976 and left in 1982, forming his own group Word of Mouth. Aside from a tremendous ego, he was alcoholic and a heroine addict. He died tragically in 1987 after he instigated a fight at a bar and suffered head injuries.

Unlike many groups, Weather Report focused on a group sound, creating complex arrangements in addition to their improvised solos, which made it more difficult to distinguish between the soloist and accompanists, because they were virtuosos on their instruments, providing awe-inspiring solos, as well as accompaniment work.

The group originally included Miroslav Vitous, percussionist Airto Moreira and drummer Alphonze Mauzon. Their self-titled debut album, as well as their follow-up I sing the Body Electric, are jazz-rock classics. However, their greatest line-up was in the mid 70s when Pastorious and drummer Peter Erskine joined. This line-up put out the fine records Black Market, Mr. Gone, and Heavy Weather, which was their biggest selling album and included their most famous hit Birdland). After Erskine and Pastorious left, they were replaced by Omar Hakim and Victor Bailey, respectively. While they were fine musicians, they lacked the flamboyance and imagination as their predecessors, Their records afterward, were polished, yet detached and lacked the fire of the early works. Shorter and Zawinul disbanded the group in 1987. In 1996, rumors circulated that the Shorter and Zawinul would reunite the group, but it never happened.

While many fusion groups only lasted a few years, Weather Report lasted over fifteen.

Hubert Laws (born November 10, 1939) is an American flutist with a 30-year career in jazz, classical, and other music genres. Laws is one of the few classical artists who has also mastered jazz, pop, and rhythm-and-blues genres, moving effortlessly from one repertory to another. In June 2010, he received a NEA Jazz Masters lifetime achievement award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Bobby Hutcherson’s second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there’s less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The latter is especially true on the two opening Hutcherson pieces, the sweetly lilting “‘Til Then” and the innocent, childlike theme of “My Joy,” which is reminiscent of “Little B’s Poem” (save for its multi-sectioned structure). Meanwhile, Chambers’ experiments with counterpoint in the context of group improvisation keep getting more evocative. The title cut is quick and driving, with lots of short, fleeting exchanges between Hutcherson and a surprisingly swinging Hancock; “Bi-Sectional” makes playful use of chromaticism in its first part, after which Hutcherson and Chambers switch between several different percussion instruments for what amounts to an artillery attack. As for the other pieces, Hutcherson’s “Subtle Neptune” fuses post-bop with Brazilian rhythms, and Hancock’s “Theme From ‘Blow Up’” is a spare modal melody over a repeated chordal vamp, somewhat reminiscent of his classic “Maiden Voyage.” All the performances are spirited enough to make the sophisticated music sound winning and accessible as well, which means that Oblique is one of the better entries in Hutcherson’s Blue Note discography and one worth tracking down.

Billy Higgins (October 11, 1936–May 3, 2001) was an American jazz drummer. He played mainly free jazz and hard bop.

Higgins played on Ornette Coleman’s first records, beginning in 1958. He then freelanced extensively with hard bop and other post-bop players, including Donald Byrd, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Milt Jackson, Jackie McLean, Pat Metheny, Hank Mobley, Thelonious Monk, Lee Morgan, David Murray, Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Mal Waldron, and Cedar Walton. He was one of the house drummers for Blue Note Records and played on dozens of Blue Note albums of the 60′s.

On a whole, he played on over 700 recordings, including recordings of rock and funk. He appeared as a jazz drummer in the 2001 movie Southlander.

In 1989, Higgins cofounded a cultural center, The World Stage, in Los Angeles to encourage and promote younger jazz musicians. It provides workshops in performance and writing, as well as concerts and recordings.

He was divorced from wife Mauricina Altier Higgins and had three sons, William, Joseph, and David, as well as a stepson Jody. His youngest son Benjamin resides in Los Angeles. He also had two daughters, Rickie Wade and Heidi. He died of liver disease and liver failure brought on by hepatitis.

Azymuth features Jose Roberto Bertrami on keyboards and percussion, Alex Malheiros on bass, Ivan Conte on drums and synthesizers, and Aleuda on additional percussion. The group was formed in 1969 in Rio de Janeiro. Due to the overwhelming prominence of Brazilian pop, Azymuth barely survived during their first decade because of their insistence on playing jazz and samba influenced instrumentals. The band’s break came in 1978 when Bertrami was invited to pen some tunes for an album by percussion virtuoso, Airto Moreira. A tour with Flora Purim added to the group’s notoriety, and a few months later the musicians signed a recording contract. Several well-received albums followed, including Outubro.

Against all odds, keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami and his Brazilian jazz-rock band, Azymuth, made quite a name for themselves in the early 1980s, playing an infectious music that blended the subtle melodies of bossa nova with hot samba rhythms and a dash of rock and roll. Light As A Feather, the group’s first release, is filled with fiery Brazilian sounds and the kind of beats that make you want to get up and dance. This fusion classic is available through a special CD only release on the Black Sun label, thanks to their producer, Joel Leibovitz.

Light As A Feather is a superb introduction to the many talents of the Brazilian band which accompanied Flora Purim on her critically acclaimed 1978 American tour. It was Purim’s assertion that Azymuth was the best group in Brazil today that gained United States exposure for the group in their own right. A textural delight, Light As A Feather features a seemingly endless variety of exotic percussion devices tastefully blended together with the uniquely spiced outpourings of Bertrami’s synthesizers. The Flora Purim/Stanley Clarke title track is an ethereal standout, while the Azymuth original Jazz Carnival offers an extended jaunt through electrifying solos and heated percussion licks against a throbbing dance beat. In fact, it was this cut which propelled Light As A Feather to the top 10 in jazz charts worldwide.
