Tiziana Ghiglioni – Yet Time

This is what you get when a vocalist is allowed to lead a quintet full of Italy’s brightest young jazz Turks: tremendous beauty and vision. With Ottaviano’s soprano sax and Battaglia’s piano keeping her company on the front line, Tiziana Ghiglioni can’t help but shine on this stellar material, two tunes for which she wrote the lyrics — in English no less. Far from being entirely ballads, the set is pretty much in medium tempo, very dreamy, and full of elegant pianism from Battaglia and the most lyrically challenging solos Ottaviano has ever played. The instrumentalists walk a fine line here between Ghiglioni’s clear, ringing voice and the desire to play out the fantasies inspired by her voice, without overpowering it. The tension all comes to a head near the end of the album, on Ornette Coleman’s glorious “Round Trip,” Kurt Weill’s “September Song,” and the Milton Nascimento number “Empty Faces.” In each of these, the band sets out a strident harmonic map for Ghiglioni to follow and she pushes her voice acrobatically to comply. The tunes work, but they don’t feel as effortless as the organic matter, such as “…And Yet Not You Alone,” at the beginning of the record, composed by Battaglia specifically for Ghiglioni. But it’s a tiny complaint; she proves herself every bit the instrumentalist her more celebrated colleagues are and, by the end of the disc, her name and voice will be etched into your memory in perpetuity.

Rhythm and blues singer and songwriter, Luther Vandross came on the music scene in 1975, singing back-up for David Bowie, and co-writing his hit single, “Fame.” Going on to sing back-up for several other popular singers, Vandross released his own album, “Never Too Much,” in 1981, and it immediately went to the top of the R&B charts. Each of his next five albums sold more than a million copies, and Vandross won his first Grammy Award in 1990, for best R&B male vocal performance. He went on to record many more hit albums, and won several more Grammys.Born in New York in 1951, Vandross began his career writing and performing jingles for television commercials.
In April, 2003, Vandross suffered a stroke that left him in a coma for nearly two months. In June, he came out of the coma, and a week later his final album, Dance With My Father, was released, debuting at number one on the pop charts. The album won four Grammys, including Song of the Year for the title song.
Never having fully recovered from the stroke, and suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, Vandross died in July 2005.

One of the first rap groups to use a live band, Brooklyn’s Stetsasonic formed in 1981 and were also among the first to promote a positive black consciousness that found its ultimate expression in the so-called daisy-age sounds of De La Soul and the Jungle Brothers. The group consisted of DJs “Prince Paul” Huston and Leonard “Wise” Roman, keyboardist/drummer/DJ Marvin “DBC” Nemley, and rappers Glenn “Daddy O” Bolton, Martin “Delite” Wright, and Bobby “Frukwan” Simmons. Daddy O and Delite founded the group as the Stetson Brothers, after the hat company, and began performing in New York hip-hop clubs, picking up other members along the way. Their debut, On Fire, was released in 1986, but it was the follow-up, In Full Gear, that brought them critical acclaim and an R&B hit, “Sally.” 1991′s Blood, Sweat & No Tears was considered by many to be their best and most diverse album, but Daddy O decided that they had run out of ideas and broke up the band. He went on to work with Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, Big Daddy Kane, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a producer and remixer. Meanwhile, Prince Paul had already established himself as a producer for his work with De La Soul and Fine Young Cannibals, and later worked with Frukwan in the Gravediggaz.
