Flanger is the piss-take version of the Compost Records thing – Germans with samplers appropriating jazz. Not only do Burnt Friedman (Drome, Nonplace Urban Field) and Uwe Schmidt (Atom(tm)) do their wanking while wearing smirks – humor being a very rare commodity among Teutonic jazzbos – they don’t shy away from the conceptual implications of what they do either (pontificating is another no-no for cool studio cats). The liner notes, for instance, claim that the title is inspired by a J.G. Ballard essay, and offer a rambling, half-bullshit/half-on-to-something critical analysis of the album’s music in a marvelous spoof of real jazz sleeve commentary.

Booker Ervin – Structurally Sound

The double meaning of the word “sound” in this title references both the phenomenon of sound and, particularly, Booker Ervin’s durability. When Ervin convened this quintet in December 1966, he’d had a string of critically acclaimed (and extraordinarily creative) albums on Prestige (case in point: The Space Book). But real success, even by jazz standards, didn’t propel Ervin to the heights where he belonged. His tenor saxophone, deeply entwined with the Texas tradition, had breadth that hit with the force of Coltrane and a tonal control that allowed him to aerate his playing beautifully. Here he does just this on both quick-paced tunes, such as trumpeter Charles Tolliver’s “Franess,” and on the band’s evocative take on Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments.” A young John Hicks lays down the piano in colorfully bright hues, and Tolliver and Ervin are off. They play riveting hard bop that should be part of any jazz collection. After all, Ervin was one of Mingus’s faves, and we know what discerning tastes Charles had.

DJ Dusk's Root Down Soundclash

Early in 2001 the Los Angeles club Root Down put on their first of a three part series called “Sound Clash,” organized & hosted by DJ Dusk. Based on the reggae sound system competitions, this was a hip-hop event – in this case featuring Madlib and Cut Chemist – going head to head, beat for beat for respect in front of a packed club.
Madlib was then unknown to many in the crowd, and Cut Chemist was at the height of his success with Jurassic 5. Each of the tracks had never been released. Each of the three rounds saw the excitement rise. The last round unleashed a partisan celebration from the captivated crowd.
Approximately a year later, the Root Down organized the round two, featuring Will.I.Am and Thes One. The drama and controversy of Round Two arose from the huge aesthetic differences on display between the “combatants.” The theatrics of the evening – clothes being taken off, ludicrous names and costumes – made the night a talking point in Los Angeles to this day. And Will.I.Am wasn’t a multi-platinum artist yet!
The last battle featured Oh No and Exile in 2003. With a relatively dignified display by the youngest pairing of the three, they closed the series with good music and much respect.
Mochilla’s Eric Coleman and B+ filmed all three events, but never had plans to release this as a DVD. However, since the tragic passing of DJ Dusk in 2006 they felt it was important to honor his legacy and share his gifts. This is for him, no edits, no overdubs, no interruptions… just raw hip-hop at its most exciting: vital and real.

Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926 – September 28, 1991) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer.
Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Miles Davis was, with his musical groups, at the forefront of several major developments in jazz music, including bebop, cool jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, and jazz fusion. Many well-known musicians rose to prominence as members of Davis’ ensembles, including saxophonists Gerry Mulligan, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, George Coleman, Wayne Shorter, and Kenny Garrett; trombonist J. J. Johnson; pianists Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Keith Jarrett; guitarists John McLaughlin, John Scofield and Mike Stern; bassists Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, and Dave Holland; and drummers Tony Williams, Billy Cobham and Jack DeJohnette.
On October 7, 2008, his album Kind of Blue, released in 1959, received its fourth platinum certification from the RIAA, signifying sales of 4 million copies. Miles Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Davis was noted as “one of the key figures in the history of jazz”.
On November 5, 2009, Rep. John Conyers of Michigan sponsored a measure in the US House of Representatives to recognize and commemorate the album Kind of Blue on its 50th anniversary. The measure also affirms jazz as a national treasure and “encourages the United States government to preserve and advance the art form of jazz music.” It passed, unanimously, with a vote of 409–0 on December 15, 2009.

Nujabes Albums!

Jun Seba (February 19, 1974 – February 26, 2010) was a Japanese hip-hop producer and DJ who recorded under the name Nujabes (Noo-Jah-Bess). His alias was simply his name “sebajun” spelled backwards. Nujabes was also owner of the Shibuya record stores, T Records and Guinness Records and founder of the independent label Hydeout Productions.
In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hiphop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL. He was also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.
Nujabes was one of the most prolific contributors to the background music and soundtracks of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a feudal Japan setting with modern anachronisms, especially in regards to hip hop culture.
On February 26, 2010, Jun Seba was involved in a traffic accident upon exiting the Shuto Expressway late at night. He died at a hospital in Shibuya Ward after failed efforts to revive him. He was 36 years old. There was a private burial with only family in attendance. Hydeout Productions has stated that Nujabes has left behind tracks, which they plan to release in the near future.

DJ Cam (born Laurent Daumail in 1973) is a French DJ. His tunes are almost entirely a hybrid of both hip-hop and jazz music, and is presented in an abstract manner. Parisian hip-hop devotee Laurent Daumail is one of a few but growing number of French artists updating hip-hop for the chill-out crowd, drawing on the beats’n'samples groundwork of producers such as Rakim, DJ Premier, and Prince Paul and combining it with broad, impressionistic strokes of dub, jazz, and soundtrack-y ambience. Like countrymen the Mighty Bop and la Funk Mob, Cam is stylistically closest to Mo’Wax artists such as DJ Shadow and DJ Krush; minimalist, downbeat instrumental hip-hop built from obscure samples and stomp-box turntable accompaniment, bent and twisted into new, artfully arranged compositions.

Nicola Conte – Bossa Per Due

Nicola Conte is an Italian DJ, producer and guitar player known for introducing an innovative style of acid jazz that incorporates bossa nova themes, melodies drawn from Italian film scores of the 1960s, easy listening themes, and ethnic Indian music.
Conte, a classically-trained musician, is mastermind of a collective of acid jazz revivalists, “The Fez Collective,” based in the Italian town of Bari, and the Idizioni-Ishatr / Schema label, their record label for promoting their distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz.
Conte’s first album was Jet Sounds of 2000. The single “Bossa Per Due” gained international recognition and was an underground hit. It was used almost immediately for a prime-time commercial for Acura automobiles. The album was licensed for American distribution by Thievery Corporation’s Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) label in the summer of 2001 as Bossa Per Due, and was a slightly reconfigured version of the Italian Jet Sounds album. This was followed by the Jet Sounds Revisited remix album in late 2002. Two years later, Blue Note’s French subsidiary released Conte’s next album Other Directions. In November 2008, Conte released his latest album, Rituals. In November of 2009, Nicola released “The Modern Sound of Nicola Conte”, versions in jazz-dub, on Schema records. Unlike his 2002 remix album which featured artists largely reworking his songs, this two disc set had Nicola releasing original titles and featured some of his jazz styled remixes of other people’s works.
Conte also produced albums by other artists such as Rosalia De Souza and Paolo Achenza Trio.

Rhythm and blues singer and songwriter, Luther Vandross came on the music scene in 1975, singing back-up for David Bowie, and co-writing his hit single, “Fame.” Going on to sing back-up for several other popular singers, Vandross released his own album, “Never Too Much,” in 1981, and it immediately went to the top of the R&B charts. Each of his next five albums sold more than a million copies, and Vandross won his first Grammy Award in 1990, for best R&B male vocal performance. He went on to record many more hit albums, and won several more Grammys.Born in New York in 1951, Vandross began his career writing and performing jingles for television commercials.
In April, 2003, Vandross suffered a stroke that left him in a coma for nearly two months. In June, he came out of the coma, and a week later his final album, Dance With My Father, was released, debuting at number one on the pop charts. The album won four Grammys, including Song of the Year for the title song.
Never having fully recovered from the stroke, and suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, Vandross died in July 2005.

Guillermo Scott Herren is a music producer and artist, who has been based out of Atlanta, Barcelona and New York. Herren releases music under various aliases, most notably Prefuse 73, Savath y Savalas, Diamond Watch Wrists, Delarosa and Asora and Piano Overlord.
Guillermo Scott Herren was born in Miami, Florida and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. His father is Catalan and his mother is Irish/Cuban. At an early age his parents encouraged him to play piano and other instruments; his mother “forced” Herren to play a wide variety of instruments, even going so far as to teach him the Suzuki Method, in order to “keep him out of trouble”. Growing up, Herren’s musical tastes branched out, and he became interested in hip-hop, punk rock, and electronic music.

CunninLynguists are a hip hop trio from Lexington, Kentucky. The group currently consists of Deacon The Villain, Kno, and Natti.
Their debut LP, Will Rap for Food, was released in October 2001. Their second LP, SouthernUnderground, was independently released April 1, 2003 on Freshchest Records. Guests included Masta Ace, Supastition and others, with production from Domingo, RJD2 and Kno.
The group landed a distribution contract with Caroline Distribution in 2004, and Southernunderground was the first project re-released after inking the deal with Will Rap For Food being re-released shortly thereafter in 2005.
The group toured throughout the U.S., Canada in 2003, 2004 and 2005, appearing onstage alongside acts like Nappy Roots, Cee-Lo Green of Goodie Mob and touring extensively with People Under the Stairs, Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan and Brand Nubian.
CunninLynguists released their third LP, A Piece of Strange, worldwide on January 24, 2006 via Caroline Records and Groove Attack Distribution. It featured guest spots from Cee-Lo Green, Immortal Technique and Tonedeff and is entirely produced by Kno. The release of A Piece of Strange saw the profile for the group rise, as they toured abroad multiple times[1] in support of the release appearing live alongside such acts as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, The Strokes and more.
CunninLynguists released their fourth LP, Dirty Acres on November 27, 2007 through a joint venture between their own label APOS Music and Swedish-based label Bad Taste Records. It features artists such as Devin the Dude, Phonte of Little Brother and Witchdoctor. CunninLynguists made their way across the United States, Europe and Canada in support of the album, headlining the Dirty Acres Tour in 3 parts over the course of 2008.
CunninLynguists have been covered in various media outlets including The Source, URB Magazine, Spin, XLR8R, Import Tuner, and The Onion. Their name is a play on the words cunnilingus, cunning, and linguistics.

Eyedea & Abilities, originally known as Sixth Sense, is an American rap duo. Eyedea who also performs under the name Oliver Hart and with freestyle group Face Candy, became widely known because of his battle and freestyle skills. Eyedea is best known for his victory at the Blaze Battle, which was aired on HBO, showing some of the best underground battlers in action. Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician (born on August 8th, 1969 as John Marshall) is an American hip hop producer from Cincinnati, Ohio and one of the four members of Five Deez, alongside Pase Rock, Sonic, and Kyle David. He is also credited with some of the music in the anime series Samurai Champloo. Unorthodox producer/rapper Fat Jon is not only the beat-maker for the underground hip-hop collective Five Deez but a member of the 3582 crew and a solo artist with a string of albums that flirt with electronica, downtempo, and dub sounds. Sometimes credited as Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician, Jon started out as a rapper in his native Cincinnati. US DJ and musician Mark Farina was born in Chicago in 1969. Farina started as a DJ, coming up at the same time as Derrick Carter with whom he would later work. His reputation as a DJ grew until he was headlining the Om Records global tour on the strength of the first of his Mushroom Jazz albums. The Mushroom Jazz series of compilations were released between 1996 and 2005. The compilations are a mix of hip-hop, Jazz and downtempo. For more info check the myspace!
