Hancock’s best-known solo works include “Cantaloupe Island”, “Watermelon Man” (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), “Maiden Voyage”, “Chameleon”, and the singles “I Thought It Was You” and “Rockit”. His 2007 tribute album “River: The Joni Letters” won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

In the ’40s, a time-travel experiment allegedly occurred in a Philadelphia naval yard. This fantastic combo of Philly musicians–pianist/keyboardist Uri Caine, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson of the rap combo the Roots–takes its name from that fictional event, and combines fusion, mainstream jazz, and R&B styles from the ’70s to today. Augmented by guitar-legend Pat Martino and trumpeter John Swana, Thompson lays down some tricky jungle beats on the title track, while the threesome venture into the avant-garde on “(Re)moved” and into Latin on “IIe Ife.” The group reincarnates Sun Ra’s “Call for All Demons” as a funky instrumental, and they brilliantly revisit Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man,” while Elton John’s “Philadelphia Freedom” is redone as a classical-style McBride/Caine duet. The late saxophonist Grover Washington Jr. was Philly’s patron jazz saint, as evidenced by Caine’s reverent solo piano rendition of Washington’s hit “Mr. Magic” and McBride’s funky, overdubbed one-man electric bass version of “Just the Two of Us.” This threesome reminds us that the City of Brotherly Love still swings.

David Axelrod, funk pioneer, comes to Mo’Wax for this semi-retrospective (two new tracks bookend seven remastered tracks straight from acetate), and he proves that he’s still ahead of his time. Flanger is the piss-take version of the Compost Records thing – Germans with samplers appropriating jazz. Not only do Burnt Friedman (Drome, Nonplace Urban Field) and Uwe Schmidt (Atom(tm)) do their wanking while wearing smirks – humor being a very rare commodity among Teutonic jazzbos – they don’t shy away from the conceptual implications of what they do either (pontificating is another no-no for cool studio cats). The liner notes, for instance, claim that the title is inspired by a J.G. Ballard essay, and offer a rambling, half-bullshit/half-on-to-something critical analysis of the album’s music in a marvelous spoof of real jazz sleeve commentary.

Best By Far is Omar’s fifth long-player – a versatile and infectious soulful hybrid, seamlessly encapsulating all of the diverse sonic elements that have defined this visionary’s career. The record presents a riveting blend of up-tempo funk-drenched Philly soul, supple bossa (taking cues from Quincy Jones’ groundbreaking 1964 masterpiece Big Band Bossa Nova), and sumptuous cinematic orchestration. Omar produced the entire album himself.

The double meaning of the word “sound” in this title references both the phenomenon of sound and, particularly, Booker Ervin’s durability. When Ervin convened this quintet in December 1966, he’d had a string of critically acclaimed (and extraordinarily creative) albums on Prestige (case in point: The Space Book). But real success, even by jazz standards, didn’t propel Ervin to the heights where he belonged. His tenor saxophone, deeply entwined with the Texas tradition, had breadth that hit with the force of Coltrane and a tonal control that allowed him to aerate his playing beautifully. Here he does just this on both quick-paced tunes, such as trumpeter Charles Tolliver’s “Franess,” and on the band’s evocative take on Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments.” A young John Hicks lays down the piano in colorfully bright hues, and Tolliver and Ervin are off. They play riveting hard bop that should be part of any jazz collection. After all, Ervin was one of Mingus’s faves, and we know what discerning tastes Charles had.

Early in 2001 the Los Angeles club Root Down put on their first of a three part series called “Sound Clash,” organized & hosted by DJ Dusk. Based on the reggae sound system competitions, this was a hip-hop event – in this case featuring Madlib and Cut Chemist – going head to head, beat for beat for respect in front of a packed club.

Madlib was then unknown to many in the crowd, and Cut Chemist was at the height of his success with Jurassic 5. Each of the tracks had never been released. Each of the three rounds saw the excitement rise. The last round unleashed a partisan celebration from the captivated crowd.

Approximately a year later, the Root Down organized the round two, featuring Will.I.Am and Thes One. The drama and controversy of Round Two arose from the huge aesthetic differences on display between the “combatants.” The theatrics of the evening – clothes being taken off, ludicrous names and costumes – made the night a talking point in Los Angeles to this day. And Will.I.Am wasn’t a multi-platinum artist yet!

The last battle featured Oh No and Exile in 2003. With a relatively dignified display by the youngest pairing of the three, they closed the series with good music and much respect.

Mochilla’s Eric Coleman and B+ filmed all three events, but never had plans to release this as a DVD. However, since the tragic passing of DJ Dusk in 2006 they felt it was important to honor his legacy and share his gifts. This is for him, no edits, no overdubs, no interruptions… just raw hip-hop at its most exciting: vital and real.
