The Detroit Experiment – The Detroit Experiment

In this talent-packed project, a varied cast of Detroit players were thrown into a studio for a few days to see what would happen. Produced by techno pioneer Carl Craig, the lineup includes jazz heavies (reedist Bennie Maupin, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, pianist Geri Allen, and violin sensation Regina Carter), Motown session players (guitarist Percy Hughes and drummer Ron Otis), and various hip-hop and electronic people. The result is a tidy musical package crammed with rich ambient textures, percolating rhythms (stellar percussionist Francisco Mora sees to that), and strong grooves that still leave enough room for the jazz folk to solo comfortably. Ranging from the smooth-jazz-like “Revelation” to the interstellar bop of “Space Odyssey” to the outright hip-hop of “The Way We Make Music” to a surreal reading of Stevie Wonder’s “Too High,” the 14 tracks here have a little something for everyone, without sacrificing quality. Rarely has this new electro-jazz-hip-hop hybrid had such soul, but what else would you expect from Detroit?

Guillermo Scott Herren is a music producer and artist, who has been based out of Atlanta, Barcelona and New York. Herren releases music under various aliases, most notably Prefuse 73, Savath y Savalas, Diamond Watch Wrists, Delarosa and Asora and Piano Overlord.

Guillermo Scott Herren was born in Miami, Florida and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. His father is Catalan and his mother is Irish/Cuban. At an early age his parents encouraged him to play piano and other instruments; his mother “forced” Herren to play a wide variety of instruments, even going so far as to teach him the Suzuki Method, in order to “keep him out of trouble”. Growing up, Herren’s musical tastes branched out, and he became interested in hip-hop, punk rock, and electronic music.

CunninLynguists Albums!

CunninLynguists are a hip hop trio from Lexington, Kentucky. The group currently consists of Deacon The Villain, Kno, and Natti.

Their debut LP, Will Rap for Food, was released in October 2001. Their second LP, SouthernUnderground, was independently released April 1, 2003 on Freshchest Records. Guests included Masta Ace, Supastition and others, with production from Domingo, RJD2 and Kno.

The group landed a distribution contract with Caroline Distribution in 2004, and Southernunderground was the first project re-released after inking the deal with Will Rap For Food being re-released shortly thereafter in 2005.

The group toured throughout the U.S., Canada in 2003, 2004 and 2005, appearing onstage alongside acts like Nappy Roots, Cee-Lo Green of Goodie Mob and touring extensively with People Under the Stairs, Raekwon of Wu-Tang Clan and Brand Nubian.

CunninLynguists released their third LP, A Piece of Strange, worldwide on January 24, 2006 via Caroline Records and Groove Attack Distribution. It featured guest spots from Cee-Lo Green, Immortal Technique and Tonedeff and is entirely produced by Kno. The release of A Piece of Strange saw the profile for the group rise, as they toured abroad multiple times^[1] in support of the release appearing live alongside such acts as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, The Strokes and more.

CunninLynguists released their fourth LP, Dirty Acres on November 27, 2007 through a joint venture between their own label APOS Music and Swedish-based label Bad Taste Records. It features artists such as Devin the Dude, Phonte of Little Brother and Witchdoctor. CunninLynguists made their way across the United States, Europe and Canada in support of the album, headlining the Dirty Acres Tour in 3 parts over the course of 2008.

CunninLynguists have been covered in various media outlets including The Source, URB Magazine, Spin, XLR8R, Import Tuner, and The Onion. Their name is a play on the words cunnilingus, cunning, and linguistics.

The year was 2003.  J Dilla and Madlib had just wrapped up their album Champion Sound, recording as Jaylib, with Dilla then still in Detroit and Madlib doing all his work from his bomb shelter studio in Los Angeles. J Rocc – who would later become the third member of Jaylib, on the turntables for each of the shows the guys did together – put together this mixtape of Dilla, Madlib and Jaylib songs, as well as some of their sources, essentially telling the story of this group.

We had some promo copies of this CD floating around for a while that year, then took the Jaylib section and pressed it on a 45, which was released as the bonus 45 with Champion Sound. Both the CD and 45 are long out of stock.

The photos were taken by B+ of Madlib in his studio in L.A. and Dilla in his in Detroit, and also came up with the concept for this packaging: a cutout photo sleeve with a second sleeve inside, juxtaposing the photos of Madlib and Dilla.

Paul Huston, better known by the stage name Prince Paul, is an American disc jockey and hip-hop record producer.

Beginning his career as a DJ for Stetsasonic, rapper and producer Prince Paul has lent his skills to albums by Boogie Down Productions, Gravediggaz, MC Lyte, Big Daddy Kane, and 3rd Bass, among others. Paul’s big break came when he produced De La Soul’s 3 Feet High and Rising album. Shattering the acknowledged rules of hip-hop production, he sampled not only funk, but all types of music to create fresh and original backing tracks. By throwing in comedy sketches as well, Prince Paul and De La Soul completely ushered in a new era for hip-hop. In 1994, Paul returned to rapping, joining RZA and Stetsasonic member Frukwan in Gravediggaz, a side project that debuted with 6 Feet Deep. He also began working with the new elite in underground rap, recruiting the Automator, New Kingdom’s Scott Harding, and Spectre for his debut solo album, 1997’s Psychoanalysis: What Is It? A Prince Among Thieves followed in 1999, and later that year Paul formed Handsome Boy Modeling School with the Automator to release the album So…How’s Your Girl?. His own Politics of the Business, another concept album that was more bitter than biting, surfaced in 2003 (a year after a second Handsome Boy Modeling School album), and was followed by 2005’s Itstrumental, as well as the archival compilation Hip Hop Gold Dust.

Looptroop Rockers is a hip hop group from Västerås, Sweden. The members are rappers Promoe (Mårten Edh), Supreme (Mathias Lundh-Isen) and DJ/Producer Embee (Magnus Bergkvist). In February 2007 rapper Cos.M.I.C (Tommy Isacsson), who had been a member of the group since 1993, decided to focus on designing and maintaining looptrooprockers.com and not to be an active member of the group. On their latest CD the group changed its name from Looptroop to Looptroop Rockers, a name they’ve used unofficially for some years prior to the change.

Andwele Gardner (born February 14, 1978), better known by his stage name Dwele is a soul singer, songwriter and record producer from Detroit, Michigan.

Gardner was raised on the west side of Detroit in a musical family. He played piano from the age of six, later taking up trumpet, bass and guitar. He was deeply affected by the fatal shooting of his father outside his home when he was age ten, later stating “I learned to put my emotions into music; it was my therapy.”He cites Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Roy Ayers, Miles Davis, and Freddie Hubbard as favorite artists, and took inspiration from hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, becoming an MC, and working with Slum Village. Gardner recorded a demo in his bedroom, called, The Rize, and sold it out of the trunk of his car. He had about 100 copies, which sold out within a week. He caught the ears of local heroes Slum Village and more specifically their world-renowned producer J Dilla.Slum Village invited Dwele to sing the hook of the song “Tainted” for their album Trinity (Past, Present and Future). It became an instant classic and led to more high profile work with female rapper Bahamadia, the all-star group Lucy Pearl and London’s New Sector Movement.^[4] Dwele signed to Virgin Records in 2003, who released his debut album, Subject, which mixed neo soul and hip hop. In a 2005 review in The Independent, his style was summed up: “Dwele’s rooted in vintage soul but isn’t stuck in the past, overly reverential or an exercise in pastiche – there’s a major hip-hop edge which betrays his original incarnation as a rapper.” A second album, Some Kinda…, followed in 2005. He then later signed with RT Music Group and KOCH records in March, 2008.

Rob-O (born Robert Odindo in Mount Vernon, New York) is an African-American rapper of INI, who parlayed his childhood friendship with producer Pete Rock into a modest career as an MC. He is known for his deft, affable delivery, which conveys a preternatural self-assurance. His lyrics reflect a nominal affiliation with the Nation of Gods and Earths.

Rob-O’s debut recorded appearance is on the track The Basement, the fourteenth in sequence on Mecca and the Soul Brother (1992), the seminal debut album by the duo of Pete Rock and his creative partner CL Smooth. In 1995, he was heavily featured on the InI debut album, Center of Attention, which was released in 2003 by BBE Records as half of a split release that also included The Original Baby Pa, the album by fellow Pete Rock associate DeDa. Rob-O’s most recent work, Rhyme Pro, was released in January 2007, and mostly consists of material recorded in the years between 1996 and 1999.
