In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on /Okayplayer’s message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship was born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called the Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights, Vol. 1.5, first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. The second Foreign Exchange album “Leave It All Behind” was released in October 2008. In 2009 time for the second installment in Nicolay’s City Lights, “Volume 2 Shibuya”.

This CD is composed of recordings taken from a beat battle that was recorded live at the Gabah in LA, April 25th 2002. The battle was billed as “The Baron Wolfgang Von Thes vs. Will.I.Am”.  Track 7 – 11 were unused during the battle.  Track 1,2 include interludes at the end from “Will.I.Am” of the Black Eyed Peas.  Track 3 includes the note “Will.I.Am takes his shirt off”.

A very, very obscure instrumental funk group from the mid-’70s, Manzel would find much fame decades later once numerous hip-hop producers sampled the drum intro from “Midnight Theme” and, in turn, sent breakbeat collectors scurrying for copies of the original record. During their heyday, Manzel didn’t amount to anything more than a pair of 45 rpm singles for the independent Fraternity Records. It was only later, during the ’90s, that the group attained notoriety. The drum intro from “Midnight Theme” — the A-side of the second of the group’s two 45s — was sampled numerous times, and quite famously at that: most gloriously by Prince Paul (on De La Soul’s “Plug Tunin’,” from the trio’s classic 3 Feet High and Rising album), and later by DJ Muggs (on Cypress Hill’s breakthrough single, “How I Could Just Kill a Man”) and RZA (on Ghostface Killah’s debut single, “Winter Warz”). These are just three instances, though. You can also hear Manzel sampled on recordings by Eric B & Rakim and Ultramagnetic MC’s among other, less well-known instances. Such famous and widespread sampling made Manzel so renowned among beat heads that Kenny Dope (of Masters at Work) and the Undercover Brother (born Victor Piagneri) dug up the original recordings, remastered and remixed them, and reissued them via Dopebrother Records in 2004.

His alias was simply his name “sebajun” spelled backwards. Nujabes was also owner of the Shibuya record stores, T Records and Guinness Records and founder of the independent label Hydeout Productions.

In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hiphop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL. He was also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.

Nujabes was one of the most prolific contributors to the background music and soundtracks of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a feudal Japan setting with modern anachronisms, especially in regards to hip hop culture.

On February 26, 2010, Jun Seba was involved in a traffic accident upon exiting the Shuto Expressway late at night. He died at a hospital in Shibuya Ward after failed efforts to revive him. He was 36 years old. There was a private burial with only family in attendance. Hydeout Productions has stated that Nujabes has left behind tracks, which they plan to release in the near future.

His tunes are almost entirely a hybrid of both hip-hop and jazz music, and is presented in an abstract manner. Parisian hip-hop devotee Laurent Daumail is one of a few but growing number of French artists updating hip-hop for the chill-out crowd, drawing on the beats’n'samples groundwork of producers such as Rakim, DJ Premier, and Prince Paul and combining it with broad, impressionistic strokes of dub, jazz, and soundtrack-y ambience. Like countrymen the Mighty Bop and la Funk Mob, Cam is stylistically closest to Mo’Wax artists such as DJ Shadow and DJ Krush; minimalist, downbeat instrumental hip-hop built from obscure samples and stomp-box turntable accompaniment, bent and twisted into new, artfully arranged compositions.

Inspired to play piano by his mother, a gospel pianist and vocalist, Glasper attended Houston’s High School for the Performing Arts. After graduation Glasper studied music at the New School University in Manhattan, where he found performance work with such luminaries as bassist Christian McBride, saxophonist Kenny Garrett, and others. Since graduating college, Glasper has worked with a variety of artists, including trumpeter Roy Hargrove, vocalist Carly Simon, and rapper Mos Def. The pianist released his debut album, Mood, on Fresh Sound New Talent in 2004. Canvas and In My Element followed in 2005 and 2007 respectively on Blue Note Records. In 2009, Glaspar released the forward-thinking album Double Booked which featured a mix of modal post-bop and funky, ’80s-Herbie Hancock-inspired numbers.

Herren releases music under various aliases, most notably Prefuse 73, Savath y Savalas, Diamond Watch Wrists, Delarosa and Asora and Piano Overlord.

Guillermo Scott Herren was born in Miami, Florida and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. His father is Catalan and his mother is Irish/Cuban. At an early age his parents encouraged him to play piano and other instruments; his mother “forced” Herren to play a wide variety of instruments, even going so far as to teach him the Suzuki Method, in order to “keep him out of trouble”. Growing up, Herren’s musical tastes branched out, and he became interested in hip-hop, punk rock, and electronic music.

Nostalgia 77 aka Ben Lamdin first burst onto the scene with his heavy, new funk based sound in 2002. In 2004 he moved away from the distinctive raw funk of his previous singles and he branched out to explore a more downtempo and jazz infused style. Nostalgia’s sound moved to hip-hop based beats fused with dusty old jazz; obscuro funk and psych bits and pieces, repolishing and rearranging them for modern day headphone junkies.

The success of this composition lead Ben to a style he describes as “a combination of soul and jazz composition with computer based production techniques”. Coming from producing hip hop style beats he had always heard snippets of jazz tracks he loved, so the fuller musical expression of actually making his own jazz music was inevitable.

His cover version of Seven Nation Army with Alice Russell has also helped bring his “Jazz Jihad” mission to a wider audience!

Aiming for an edgy sound whilst continuing to search for a more personal expression, Nostalgia 77’s influences include free and spiritual jazz as well as 60’s funk and soul and Afro sounds.

Nostalgia 77 can be booked as a DJ or as the full nine piece live band.
