In a remarkably short span of time, Charlie Parker rewrote the rules of jazz and established himself as one of the most important musicians of the twentieth century.
Parker made his mark in many ways — as a virtuoso saxophonist, and innovative composer, a trend-setting bandleader, and a galvanizing force in the development of modern jazz. He was on this earth for only thirty-four years, but he left behind several lifetimes’ worth of immortal music.
Much of that music was documented by Norman Granz, the legendary record producer and founder of Verve Records, between 1947 and late 1954, just a few months before Parker’s death. These three discs contain the master takes from every studio session Parker did for Granz, including the famous Charlie Parker With Strings recordings. With an all-star supporting cast that features Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Max Roach, and many others.

40 Winks is an instrumental hip hop group made up of two producers – padmo’ and weedy – from Antwerp, Belgium.
40 Winks hit the scene in 2002, with a whole slew of laidback beats. Eager to share their sound with the world, they released a couple of albums independently. The attention they got from this, allowed them to build with people from around the world.
One of these independently released albums, More Than Loops, got reissued in Japan on Swamp Records, after that the ball kept rolling. On their first worldwide release, Extended Pleasure on Escapism Records (2005), they reached listeners well beyond the (instrumental) hip hop community with the song “melancholia”. After appearances on compilations, like Weapons of Hope on Little-D (2006), they got a chance to do their thing on the renowned label, Merck Records with Sound Puzzle (2007). All this led them back to Europe, where the German based Project: Mooncircle welcomed them with a spot on the compilation Heart on the right spot (2007) and a full album The Lucid Effect (2008). In 2009 they took some time off, doing solo stuff and remixes. In 2011 40 Winks is back with a double LP called It’s The Trip (2011) on Project: Mooncircle.

Though some will argue about whether Wayne Shorter’s primary impact on jazz has been as a composer or as a saxophonist, hardly anyone will dispute his overall importance as one of jazz’s leading figures over a long span of time. Though indebted to a great extent to John Coltrane, with whom he practiced in the mid-’50s while still an undergraduate, Shorter eventually developed his own more succinct manner on tenor sax, retaining the tough tone quality and intensity and in later years, adding an element of funk. On soprano, Shorter is almost another player entirely, his lovely tone shining like a light beam, his sensibilities attuned more to lyrical thoughts, his choice of notes becoming more spare as his career unfolded. Shorter’s influence as a player, stemming mainly from his achievements in the 1960s and ’70s, has been tremendous upon the neo-bop brigade who emerged in the early ’80s, most notably Branford Marsalis. As a composer, he is best known for carefully conceived, complex, long-limbed, endlessly winding tunes, many of which have become jazz standards yet have spawned few imitators.

Herbert Jeffrey “Herbie” Hancock (born April 12, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois) is an American pianist, bandleader and composer. As part of Miles Davis’s “second great quintet”, Hancock helped redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section, and was one of the primary architects of the “post-bop” sound. He was one of the first jazz musicians to embrace synthesizers and funk. Hancock’s music is often melodic and accessible; he has had many songs “cross over” and achieved success among pop audiences. His music embraces elements of funk and soul while adopting freer stylistic elements from jazz. In his jazz improvisation, he possesses a unique creative blend of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, with harmonic stylings much like the styles of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.
Hancock’s best-known solo works include “Cantaloupe Island”, “Watermelon Man” (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), “Maiden Voyage”, “Chameleon”, and the singles “I Thought It Was You” and “Rockit”. His 2007 tribute album “River: The Joni Letters” won the 2008 Grammy Award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album ever to win the award after Getz/Gilberto in 1965.

Polish duo Skalpel return with their second album for Ninja Tune and it’s a deeper, darker, more satisfying journey into the roots of Eastern European jazz and breaks than they have ever managed before. Very much one for jazzers, beat heads and strong cigarette smokers, “Konfusion” is an album to soundtrack your espresso breaks and to play so that you don’t have to read Jean Paul Sartre. These boys are celebrities in their mother country, which suggests that the Poles have slightly better taste than we do.

Made three cds “Moonbooty” (2005) “Rituals Of Life” (2008) “DR.Know” (2010) and played hundreds of djsets all over Italy. In 2007 Benn invited to collaborate with Italian 70 Soundtracks composer Franco Micalizzi, doing the musical arrangements for the incredible show-event “Gli Originali” (myspace.com/glioriginali). Katzuma’s tracks have been used for commercial spots and tv shows and as a chant to invoke the troubled spirit of El Chupacabra. Born and raised in the Netherlands, classically trained multi-instrumentalist and producer Nicolay played in a number of hip-hop and R&B bands around his homeland, but it wasn’t until 2000 that he decided to start producing his own beats. In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on /Okayplayer’s message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship was born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called the Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights, Vol. 1.5, first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. The second Foreign Exchange album “Leave It All Behind” was released in October 2008. In 2009 time for the second installment in Nicolay’s City Lights, “Volume 2 Shibuya”.

San Diego-bred yoga instructor Sumach Ecks turned from rapping with the Masters of the Universe crew and DJing with Killowattz to focus on his solo endeavors under the name Artist. In 2006, around the time he relocated to Las Vegas to teach yoga, he crossed paths with Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus, and the three established a bond. Ecks, who had been making lo-fi psychedelic hip-hop for his own enjoyment, recruited the two beatmakers to produce songs for him, which he would later enhance with his distinctive raspy vocals. After Ecks released the 7″ singles “Ancestors” and “Kowboyz & Indians,” the full-length A Sufi and a Killer (Warp) was released in 2010.
