Sing (If You Want It) is the sixth album by British neo-soul singer Omar, released in April 2006 on Omar’s own Ether label. Sing (If You Want It) was produced by Omar and his brother, Scratch Professer, and features guest appearances from long-time Omar fans Stevie Wonder and Angie Stone, as well as rapper Common and British artists Estelle and Rodney P.
Omar’s enviable career – which has seen him sell over half a million records – including his worldwide hit “There’s Nothing Like This”, in 1992, which captured the imagination of soul fans the world over; Stevie Wonder declared himself a fan on first hearing it, and vowed to work with him. His list of collaborators include Erykah Badu and legendary Motown producers Leon Ware and Lamont Dozier. Robert Luis summarises: “Omar is just a hugely influential and talented artist, and importantly he has always been respected by fellow musicians, which is proved by all the people queuing up to collaborate with him.”

Roy Hargrove & The RH Factor – Distractions

Distractions is jam-packed with new jams from The RH Factor. From the old-school vibe of “Crazy Race” to the down-and-dirty instrumental “Kansas City Funk,” this much-anticipated disc grooves with an organic funk/soul sound. It is yet another world that Hargrove lives in comfortably, and he once again shows off his talents as a composer. He wrote or co-wrote nearly all of Distractions’ nine compositions including “Can’t Stop” and the title track, an extended jam captured here in four parts.
The largesse of sound created by the RH Factor comes from the band’s lineup of two drummers (Willie Jones III and Jason “JT” Thomas), two bass players (Lenny Stalworth and Reggie Washington), one guitar player (Todd Parsnow), three keyboard players (Charles McCambell, Bobby Sparks and Neufville), and two saxophone players (Keith Anderson and special guest David “Fathead” Newman). Hargrove plays both trumpet and flugelhorn here.

Kankick – Serious Business This!

Kankick has been chopping drums with fellow Oxnard legend Madlib since Junior High, and was an original member of the Lootpack. Raised by a single mother, Kankick immersed himself in music from childhood. Pillaging his Mom’s records he developed his ear, with music ranging from Bruce Springsteen to RUN DMC. Fiercely independent, Kankick broke off from the Lootpack to form his own ‘Funk Farm’ crew, whose members included DJ Babu and God’s Gift. Honing his own unique sound over the years, Kankick’s production is still light years ahead of today’s contrived and static Hip Hop scene.

Christian Scott, born March 31, 1983 in New Orleans, Louisiana is a Grammy Award nominated jazz trumpeter, composer and producer. He has been heralded by JazzTimes magazine as “the Architect of a new commercially viable fusion” and “Jazz’s young style God.” The nephew of jazz alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, since 2006 Scott has released four studio albums, and one live recording. The trumpeter is noted for his use of an unvoiced tone, which he calls his “whisper technique.

Blue Note Plays Billie Holiday is a solid single-disc collection of standards associated with legendary vocalist Billie Holiday that were culled from various Blue Note releases. Included are such cuts as trumpeter Clifford Brown’s 1953 version of “Easy Living” off New Star on the Horizon and tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec’s take on “Lover Man” from his 1961 album It Might as Well Be Spring. While hardcore collectors will most likely own the complete albums these recordings are taken from, this is nonetheless a very enjoyable collection. As an introduction to the classic Blue Note catalog, the Blue Note Plays… collections are a nice place to start.

In 1961, four fellows from Houston transplanted themselves to Los Angeles and added more distinctly bluesy elements to the soul jazz style with an ear-grabbing album called The Freedom Sound on the Pacific Jazz label. The band, which had been known in turn as the Swingsters, the Modern Jazz Sextet, and the Nighthawks, was now named the Jazz Crusaders. Its four co-leaders were trombonist Wayne Henderson, tenor saxophonist (and occasional bassist) Wilton Felder, pianist Joe Sample, and drummer Nesbert “Stix” Hooper.
The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacific Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces, the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical background for a Ford Mustang TV commercial.
But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they decided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements.
If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such albums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (recorded variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979.
The Crusaders’ popularity started to fade in the early Eighties, prompted by Henderson’s departure. Hooper then left as well, and by the early Nineties Sample and Felder had disbanded the group. A few years later, Henderson and Felder began performing together, first as the New Crusaders and, more recently, as the Jazz Crusaders.

Ann Peebles (born April 27, 1947) is a singer and songwriter, best known for her Memphis soul albums of the 1970s on the Hi Records label. Two of her better known songs are “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” and “I Can’t Stand the Rain”, popularised by cover versions by Paul Young and Eruption respectively. “I Can’t Stand the Rain” was written by her husband, Don Bryant, former radio broadcaster, Bernard “Bernie” Miller, and Peebles.
Peebles was discovered as a talent by Gene “Bowlegs” Miller of Hi Records during a 1968 trip to sit in singing with him at a Memphis, Tennessee, nightclub. A popular local bandleader, Miller was known for also helping other musicians, such as members of the Hi Rhythm Section, get their start in the Memphis music industry. Peebles soon began penning and singing hits for the label, co-writing with label staff songwriter Don Bryant, whom she later married in 1974. Peebles released a number of commercially successful and critically well received albums produced by Willie Mitchell on Hi Records throughout the 1970s, until the rise of disco music in the late 1970s took her music out of the limelight. Hi Records was sold in 1977, but Peebles reunited with Willie Mitchell in 1989 to produce her comeback album, Call Me.
In 2006 she released the album Brand New Classics, which consisted of re-recordings of some of her songs in an acoustic style.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, classically trained multi-instrumentalist and producer Nicolay played in a number of hip-hop and R&B bands around his homeland, but it wasn’t until 2000 that he decided to start producing his own beats. In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on /Okayplayer’s message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship was born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called the Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights, Vol. 1.5, first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. The second Foreign Exchange album “Leave It All Behind” was released in October 2008. In 2009 time for the second installment in Nicolay’s City Lights, “Volume 2 Shibuya”.

Jun Seba (February 19, 1974 – February 26, 2010) was a Japanese hip-hop producer and DJ who recorded under the name Nujabes (Noo-Jah-Bess). His alias was simply his name “sebajun” spelled backwards. Nujabes was also owner of the Shibuya record stores, T Records and Guinness Records and founder of the independent label Hydeout Productions.
In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hiphop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL. He was also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.
Nujabes was one of the most prolific contributors to the background music and soundtracks of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a feudal Japan setting with modern anachronisms, especially in regards to hip hop culture.
On February 26, 2010, Jun Seba was involved in a traffic accident upon exiting the Shuto Expressway late at night. He died at a hospital in Shibuya Ward after failed efforts to revive him. He was 36 years old. There was a private burial with only family in attendance. Hydeout Productions has stated that Nujabes has left behind tracks, which they plan to release in the near future.

DJ Cam (born Laurent Daumail in 1973) is a French DJ. His tunes are almost entirely a hybrid of both hip-hop and jazz music, and is presented in an abstract manner. Parisian hip-hop devotee Laurent Daumail is one of a few but growing number of French artists updating hip-hop for the chill-out crowd, drawing on the beats’n'samples groundwork of producers such as Rakim, DJ Premier, and Prince Paul and combining it with broad, impressionistic strokes of dub, jazz, and soundtrack-y ambience. Like countrymen the Mighty Bop and la Funk Mob, Cam is stylistically closest to Mo’Wax artists such as DJ Shadow and DJ Krush; minimalist, downbeat instrumental hip-hop built from obscure samples and stomp-box turntable accompaniment, bent and twisted into new, artfully arranged compositions.

Georgia Anne Muldrow is an American singer and producer based in Los Angeles, California. She was the first female artist signed to the label and is currently in a relationship with fellow former Stones Throw artist Dudley Perkins. The two recently gave birth to a baby boy and live together. Aside from their relationship the two have also collobarated together on several records including the critically acclaimed “G&D” project released by Look Records in 2007. In addition to their creative collobartions, the couple also run two independent labels titled Somothership (distributed by KOCH Entertainment in North America) and Epistrophik Peach Sounds (distributed by Groove Attack in Europe).
Georgia’s father is the late jazz guitarist Ronald Muldrow and her mother is Rickie Byars-Beckwith (www.rickiebyars.com/bio.html) Musical director of Agape Spiritual Center in Culver City, CA and Stepfather is Rev. Michael Beckwith who is best known for being a teacher in the Movie and book “The Secert” . Her early work involved collaborations with the Platinum Pied Pipers and Sa-Ra. Most recently she was featured on Erykah Badu’s latest album on the track “Master Teacher.” Georgia is known for playing the majority of instruments featured on her recordings. She has also started producing for various artists including Black Milk, Little Brother, Stacey Epps and more. Her vocal style and musical accompaniment often are free-form in nature and truly something unique.

Rhythm and blues singer and songwriter, Luther Vandross came on the music scene in 1975, singing back-up for David Bowie, and co-writing his hit single, “Fame.” Going on to sing back-up for several other popular singers, Vandross released his own album, “Never Too Much,” in 1981, and it immediately went to the top of the R&B charts. Each of his next five albums sold more than a million copies, and Vandross won his first Grammy Award in 1990, for best R&B male vocal performance. He went on to record many more hit albums, and won several more Grammys.Born in New York in 1951, Vandross began his career writing and performing jingles for television commercials.
In April, 2003, Vandross suffered a stroke that left him in a coma for nearly two months. In June, he came out of the coma, and a week later his final album, Dance With My Father, was released, debuting at number one on the pop charts. The album won four Grammys, including Song of the Year for the title song.
Never having fully recovered from the stroke, and suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, Vandross died in July 2005.
