Sing (If You Want It) is the sixth album by British neo-soul singer Omar, released in April 2006 on Omar’s own Ether label. Sing (If You Want It) was produced by Omar and his brother, Scratch Professer, and features guest appearances from long-time Omar fans Stevie Wonder and Angie Stone, as well as rapper Common and British artists Estelle and Rodney P.

Omar’s enviable career – which has seen him sell over half a million records – including his worldwide hit “There’s Nothing Like This”, in 1992, which captured the imagination of soul fans the world over; Stevie Wonder declared himself a fan on first hearing it, and vowed to work with him. His list of collaborators include Erykah Badu and legendary Motown producers Leon Ware and Lamont Dozier. Robert Luis summarises: “Omar is just a hugely influential and talented artist, and importantly he has always been respected by fellow musicians, which is proved by all the people queuing up to collaborate with him.”

Distractions is jam-packed with new jams from The RH Factor. From the old-school vibe of “Crazy Race” to the down-and-dirty instrumental “Kansas City Funk,” this much-anticipated disc grooves with an organic funk/soul sound. It is yet another world that Hargrove lives in comfortably, and he once again shows off his talents as a composer. He wrote or co-wrote nearly all of Distractions’ nine compositions including “Can’t Stop” and the title track, an extended jam captured here in four parts.

The largesse of sound created by the RH Factor comes from the band’s lineup of two drummers (Willie Jones III and Jason “JT” Thomas), two bass players (Lenny Stalworth and Reggie Washington), one guitar player (Todd Parsnow), three keyboard players (Charles McCambell, Bobby Sparks and Neufville), and two saxophone players (Keith Anderson and special guest David “Fathead” Newman). Hargrove plays both trumpet and flugelhorn here.

Kankick has been chopping drums with fellow Oxnard legend Madlib since Junior High, and was an original member of the Lootpack. Raised by a single mother, Kankick immersed himself in music from childhood. Pillaging his Mom’s records he developed his ear, with music ranging from Bruce Springsteen to RUN DMC. Fiercely independent, Kankick broke off from the Lootpack to form his own ‘Funk Farm’ crew, whose members included DJ Babu and God’s Gift. Blue Note Plays Billie Holiday is a solid single-disc collection of standards associated with legendary vocalist Billie Holiday that were culled from various Blue Note releases. Included are such cuts as trumpeter Clifford Brown’s 1953 version of “Easy Living” off New Star on the Horizon and tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec’s take on “Lover Man” from his 1961 album It Might as Well Be Spring. While hardcore collectors will most likely own the complete albums these recordings are taken from, this is nonetheless a very enjoyable collection. As an introduction to the classic Blue Note catalog, the Blue Note Plays… collections are a nice place to start.

The Jazz Crusaders sound caught on big time, and their subsequent Pacific Jazz albums rewarded them with a good deal of exposure. The band performed regularly and got plenty of airplay. One of its signature pieces, the rollickingly fast “Young Rabbits,” was even used as the musical background for a Ford Mustang TV commercial.

But as times changed, so did the Jazz Crusaders. In the late Sixties, they placed such popular numbers as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” and “Get Back” in their repertoire, and firm backbeats began to bolster many a selection. By 1971, they decided that the word “jazz” kept them from attracting a wider listener base, and so they emerged anew with The Crusaders, Vol. 1 (Chisa), an album that openly infused jazz with pop, soul, and r&b elements.

If the Jazz Crusaders had achieved some degree of popularity, it was nothing like the crossover success that greeted the Crusaders. Such albums as Scratch, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Those Southern Knights, Free as the Wind, Images, Street Life, and Royal Jam (recorded variously for the Chisa, ABC Blue Thumb, and MCA labels) sold well and brought in a deluge of new fans. Street Life’s title track provided the Crusaders with a Billboard top forty hit, reaching no. 36 in 1979.

The Crusaders’ popularity started to fade in the early Eighties, prompted by Henderson’s departure. Hooper then left as well, and by the early Nineties Sample and Felder had disbanded the group. A few years later, Henderson and Felder began performing together, first as the New Crusaders and, more recently, as the Jazz Crusaders.
