One would never have imagined that an unexhausted supply of amazing funky, groovy compositions and hidden treasures from the 1970s would emerge from the vaults and shed light on the world over 30 years later.
“Dramatic Funk Themes” is a collection of such gems, all of which originate from the archives of the Themes International Music Library. Soundtracks for scenes which did not exist at the time – sometimes action-packed, dramatic or driving – such as a high speed car chase – or sometimes more laid-back and relaxed like crusing in a ragtop through the city. These are the scenes played out over a musical backdrop loaded with wah-wah guitars, deep basslines, rhodes, clavinets, analogue synthesizers, hammond organs, flutes, razor-sharp brass, groovy percussion and solid drum beats.
The Themes International Library was founded in 1973 as an offshoot to its parent company KPM by England’s elite studio session musicians Alan Parker, Alan Hawkshaw, Mike Moran and Barry Morgan.
The sounds and arrangements from the Themes Library were way ahead of their time, with their classic breaks and beats, and remain today on the most wanted lists of rare groove collectors, DJs and hip-hop producers alike. Also worth noting is that, in addition to the recordings made in London, some were put to tape in Munich with the support of none less than the brass section of the Max Greger Orchestra!
Themes International Library LPs were never available for purchase by the general public and were pressed in small quantities solely for the purposes of supplying music samples to the radio, television, film and production houses. Nowadays one has to dig very deeply in the pockets in order to snap up these treasures on auction sites such as Ebay. Depending on the album, prices can lie in the range 40 to 400 US Dollars (e.g. “The All American Powerhouse”).

40 Winks is an instrumental hip hop group made up of two producers – padmo’ and weedy – from Antwerp, Belgium.
40 Winks hit the scene in 2002, with a whole slew of laidback beats. Eager to share their sound with the world, they released a couple of albums independently. The attention they got from this, allowed them to build with people from around the world.
One of these independently released albums, More Than Loops, got reissued in Japan on Swamp Records, after that the ball kept rolling. On their first worldwide release, Extended Pleasure on Escapism Records (2005), they reached listeners well beyond the (instrumental) hip hop community with the song “melancholia”. After appearances on compilations, like Weapons of Hope on Little-D (2006), they got a chance to do their thing on the renowned label, Merck Records with Sound Puzzle (2007). All this led them back to Europe, where the German based Project: Mooncircle welcomed them with a spot on the compilation Heart on the right spot (2007) and a full album The Lucid Effect (2008). In 2009 they took some time off, doing solo stuff and remixes. In 2011 40 Winks is back with a double LP called It’s The Trip (2011) on Project: Mooncircle.

Christian Scott, born March 31, 1983 in New Orleans, Louisiana is a Grammy Award nominated jazz trumpeter, composer and producer. He has been heralded by JazzTimes magazine as “the Architect of a new commercially viable fusion” and “Jazz’s young style God.” The nephew of jazz alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, since 2006 Scott has released four studio albums, and one live recording. The trumpeter is noted for his use of an unvoiced tone, which he calls his “whisper technique.

Vol.1
Will Quantic is known around the world for his blistering stage performances with his band the Quantic Soul Orchestra. His ear for a good tune, and his feel for a good rhythm didn’t come from nowhere – you see Quantic has been collecting rare funk 45s for years, and in that time he has absorbed every drum kick, every horn line and every guitar lick into his very soul. It’s hard to make good music without drawing upon good influence, so along with Quantic, Jazzman have unearthed some of the very best and rarest funk 45s known (and unknown) to man. These records are pure quality, the exorbitant prices that collectors will pay for the originals lays testament to that, and will stand the test of time as a barometer of good ol’ funky music that is truly inspirational. It’s a shame that the original 45s are so rare, with only a few hundred being pressed in many cases, but it is possible that with such rarity comes excellence, distinction and quality. Many tracks were never before reissued and all songs are fully licensed and restored from original sources.

There’s few folks we’d trust with our ears more than Will “Quantic” Holland – an artist we’ve come to love for his own funky music in recent years, and a collector who’s always driven to dig for the rarest bits possible! This time around, he’s allied with the Jazzman Records crew, in a sweet CD presentation of 16 rare tracks, some previously reissued on vinyl 45s by the label – now finally brought together in one amazing package that’s filled with vintage photos, original label scans, a “rarity guide”, and detailed notes on every single tune! Even if you’ve managed to score some of the Jazzman vinyl reissues, this overstuffed package is worth grabbing up as well – and like the first volume, the collaboration of Quantic and Jazzman means that the compilation’s about as funky as funky can be.

The very essence of great instrumental hip hop albums should revolve heavily around two things…heavy drums and beautiful samples. Lately, instrumental heads have held in high regards labels like Bully, no doubt due to their knack for handpicking amazing DJ’s and producers for a series of limited edition releases from the likes of Sixtoo, Maker, DJ Signify, Joe Beats and more. That said, it’s time we stop drooling over the next Bully release and take note of Dday One, whose last LP, Loop Extensions, went from highly unknown, to heavily slept on, as it is now a much sought after item. If you missed releases like the Signal Path LP, it’s time to wake up…Dday has arrived! Picking up the pace on the beats here, unlike his previous down-tempo heroin coma tracks, there is still plenty of head-nodding happening here.

Italian DJ/producer Nicola Conte’s loungey brand of acid jazz relies extensively on bossa nova, but is also heavily influenced by the swinging soundtracks of Italian films in the ’60s and ’70s, plus touches of ethnic music and easy listening kitsch reminiscent of Japan’s Pizzicato Five. Part of the loose-knit Fez collective of artsy acid jazz revivalists centered in the Italian town of Bari, Conte was a classically trained musician who instead moved into production and DJing, working with artists like the Paolo Achenza Trio, the Fez Combo, Balanco, Quintetto X, and the Intensive Jazz Sextet. Conte also masterminded the Schema label, which gave many of those artists a home and cultivated a trademark, distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz. As for his own recording career, Conte scored an underground hit with his first single, “Bossa Per Due,” which appeared on a variety of compilations and was licensed in the U.S. for an Acura commercial. Conte’s first album to be released in America was also titled Bossa Per Due, a slightly reconfigured version of the Italian Jet Sounds; it appeared on Thievery Corporation’s ESL (Eighteenth Street Lounge) label in the summer of 2001. The remix album Jet Sounds Revisited followed in late 2002. Two years later, Conte bowed on Blue Note’s French subsidiary with an assured jazz date, Other Directions. Quiet Stars and a slew of singles followed before Conte would return with Viagem in 2008.

Samon Kawamura – Unfold

Unfold, the successor of Translations (Samon ´s debut-album released on Nesola in the middle of 2007), came into existence. The most obvious difference in comparison with its predecessor is the participation of vocalists/rappers, whose selection nearly seems to follow a concept.
With Madlib´ s brother OH NO and Aloe Blacc two Stonesthrow-artists stood in front of the mic. The contributions of Om’Mas Keith (SA-RA Creative Partners) and the producing MC Ta’Raach fit in the picture as well with regard to the creative backgrounds and interests, the whole thing being rounded out by Kev Brown from the Jazzy Jeff-camp and Laura López Castro.
With Unfold there nearly is a balance between songs with and without vocals. The message being articulated by the lyrical contributions to the songs is basically characterized by passion for the art form and some kind of authentic and serious contemplation on the subject matter.

Aldo Romano – Just Jazz

Aldo Romano has long proven himself an innovative leader and the 2007 sessions that make up Just Jazz are no exception. Romano is not one to take a lot of solos himself, preferring to showcase his bandmates while adding color behind them. His pianoless quartet consists of clarinetist Mauro Negri, who played on Romano’s earlier Dreyfus CD État de Fait, old friend Henri Texier on bass, and the much younger Géraldine Laurent, a gifted French saxophonist whose star is rising. Most of the release focuses on Romano’s captivating originals, highlighted by the emotional “Cité-Soleil” (French for “Sun City”), named for the wretched shanty town in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. “Township” is an infectious African-flavored chant, with Laurent’s vocal-like alto recalling Eric Dolphy, and Negri’s electronically altered clarinet adding seasoning. “Chick Webb,” named for the famous swing drummer, has a fun twist in that the bassist is the featured soloist. Romano’s love for Ornette Coleman’s work is well known, so it shouldn’t be surprising to hear the dissonance within the drummer’s “Libero!!” (“Free!!”).” His powerful interpretation of Fats Waller’s maudlin “Black and Blue” and lighthearted take of Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag” round out this diverse, rewarding CD.

Entirely self-produced, day.break 2.0 is in a sense a heartfelt homage to this young women’s inspirations and in another, a whimsical and revealing voyage down the road less traveled. Often times snatching inspiration out of the air, this classically trained pianist employs a limitless assortment of sonic elements to complete her hip hop inspired, soul experiments. With songs like “Discovery”, “Gogh” and “Only and Always” Muhsinah’s knack for evoking the head-nod seems almost intrinsic; all the while, delivering uniquely dynamic, stirring and technically superior vocals in songs like “Outsource” and “NetKnot”. Muhsinah’s overall choice of words and expressions leave her hovering between that of a “self-indulgent flower-child” and “post-modern idealist”. Whether conventional or unconventional in inception, Muhsinah’s music always seems to fall perfectly to the more palatable side of experimental. Unabashedly honest in so many ways, Muhsinah’s makes it clear that although the road less travel looks a bit un-kept and may present some dangers, it is assuredly the most fun path to tread.

”LIQUID SPIRITS”, Dutch Contemporary Soul formation founded by producers/musicians Manuel Hugas (bass) and Wiboud Burkens (keyboards). The Liquid Spirits band consists solely of the finest musicians of the Dutch Music Scene: Jasmin Tusjadia, Dedre Twiss, Lo van Gorp, Brian Zalmijn (vocals), Cyril Directie (drums), Wiboud Burkens (keyboards), Manuel Hugas (bass) and Marc Bien (guitars).
Considered one of the best hip hop-soul bands in Europe, their music – a mix of hiphop grooves, ambient and soul is melodic and deep. Their “hip hop-soul” music arises because the group writes, produce and record together. When doing this they use different production styles like the monotheism of sample culture, old school soul recordings with all live instruments and combinations. The variety of vocal harmonies and soulful melodies are never slick, but always sophisticated, subtle and emotional.

LA’s Take gives up a dope album of blunted slug-hop featuring a mutant jazz mix from Dimlite. ‘The Dirty Decibels of Thomas Two Thousand’ is a merry concoction of good-times soul samples and crafty beat science pieced together with a spacecaked collage effect that only works so well due to Take’s organic and fluid approach to beat construction. His sound is comparable to many of his LA peers, from Ras G to Fly Lo, taking Dilla as a starting point before jetting off into the astro-hop ether with a fully loaded zoot and and a dusty MPC for company.
