This collaborative project started as a conversation between two like-minded individuals, Question and Freddie Joachim. They call it, “STUDY GUIDE: An instrumental look at scholastic development.” The concept was simple; both artists possessed a distinct sound with an emphasis on jazz. The end result is a compilation that walks you through one of the most progressive musical art form. Both artists have been spinning hip hop and jazz plus other genres since the 1990s. Freddie has produced music for many indie hip hop and soul artists worldwide. His first album, “In With Time”, was released 2008 in Japan, and featured Aloe Blacc, Blu, Munshine, Choice 37, Lauren Santiago, Profile (The Upstarts/The Sound Providers), Surreal, Othello, Son of Ran and more. Question started making beats with an ASR-10. He then moved on to the MPC and has stuck to it ever since. Question’s music is an interpretation of a timeless era, purely fueled by Jazz & Soul. Volume 1
This compilation brings together some of the finest producers currently working in the field of forward thinking beat-crafting, such as Flying Lotus/Samiyam (here billed as Flyamsam), Aardvarck and Steve Spacek (Black Pocket) as well as less established names. It’s rare that you come across compilations with such a unified sound as this. From its very beginnings, the collection establishes a unique brand of J-Dilla-inspired beat production and soulful instrumentation. J Todd’s ‘The Night’ encapsulates this perfectly, it’s roughly trimmed samples making for an entirely humanised take on easy going electronic music. Further into the compilation, Tom Trago’s combination of drifting synth pads and plunging low-end rhythms proves to be a winning formula. Similarly, Hearin’ Aid’s ‘Figz’ comes with jazzy grooves toughened up by a rasping bassline and a brilliantly dirty snare sound. Finally, co-curator Jay Scarlett rounds off the compilation with one of its finest tracks, the Dr Dre-indebted ‘Love Music’. A meticulously compiled body of work this, which succeeds in setting established names and newbie producers next to each other without lapses in quality control.

ACUSMATIC GROUP is an instrumental cinematic-jazz-funk studio project, founded by 2 musicians / producers (Romeo Sandri and Michele Berselli) based in the North-West of Italy.

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British jazz and electronic outfit, created in the late 1990s by Jason Swinscoe. The band is signed to Ninja Tune independent record label. In addition to Swinscoe, the band includes PC (former DJ Food member Patrick Carpenter) on turntables, Luke Flowers (drums), Tom Chant (Saxophone), Nick Ramm (piano), Stuart McCallum (guitar) and Phil France (double bass). Former members include Jamie Coleman (trumpet), T. Daniel Howard (drums), Federico Ughi (drums) and Alex James (piano). The most recent addition to the band is Mancunian guitarist Stuart McCallum.
The Cinematic Orchestra’s sound, in both live and studio contexts, employs a live band which improvises along with a turntablist and electronic elements such as samples provided by Swinscoe. In their studio releases Swinscoe will often remix the live source material to produce a combination of live jazz improvisation with electronica, such that it is difficult to tell where the improvisation ends and the production begins.

Kan Kick – Beautiful Opus Of Love Deeper Than Flesh

Kankick is a hip-hop producer from Oxnard, CA. He was once a member of Lootpack, but has gone on to work with Declaime, Tha Alkaholiks, and DJ Babu, among others. His first album is entitled From Artz Unknown and was released in 2001. “Beautiful: Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh” continues Kankick’s tradition of low-key loops and fuzzed-out jazziness. “Thursdays at the Good Life” rocks a lounge piano and background bells, “Black Women Candle Wax” uses a little static to augment the simple synth melody, and a river of bubbling crowd noise percolates under the mellow loop that powers “Continued Togetherness.” Piano figures heavy on “Beautiful,” and some of Kankick’s best work throughout the disc’s 58 minutes is anchored on lilting, mid-range keywork (“NightTime Beauty,” “Serenade the Outdoor Visitors,” and what kind of sounds like an electric piano played in reverse on “OX Coming at Ya”). If you’re looking to get your party started, “Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh” might not be quite the right vehicle. But once the party’s winding down, and you and your people are just settling in during the late night hours, it’s the perfect accompaniment for slowly nodding your head and drifting into a daze on the couch.

Secondhand Sureshots is a filmed experiment in creative sound recycling. Dublab director Bryan “Morpho” Younce sent some of the world’s best beatmakers/DJs (Daedalus, Nobody, J. Rocc and Ras G) on a safari into L.A. thrift stores with orders to make new music out of five finds while the cameras filmed the whole process. Born and raised in the Netherlands, classically trained multi-instrumentalist and producer Nicolay played in a number of hip-hop and R&B bands around his homeland, but it wasn’t until 2000 that he decided to start producing his own beats. In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on /Okayplayer’s message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship was born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called the Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights, Vol. 1.5, first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. The second Foreign Exchange album “Leave It All Behind” was released in October 2008. In 2009 time for the second installment in Nicolay’s City Lights, “Volume 2 Shibuya”.

Quetzal – Vision

It would be fair to call Quetzal a typical vinyl junkie; born and raised on the sounds of classic soul and jazz, by the early 90′s he had discovered a love of hip hop culture, through the New York scene. It was this music and a fascination with processes used to create it, which gave Quetzal the drive to become a producer. Sample based music and crate digging were the flavour, and by 2003 producing had become the focus of his career. ‘Vision’ follows on from the hugely popular Onra & Quetzal joint drop ‘…Present Tribute’. Onra’s follow up to this was the massive ‘Chinoiseries’ album, merging instrumental hip hop and obscure Vietnamese pop samples (leading to one track being lifted and reinterpreted for the Coka-Cola Beijing Olympics ad campaign!) Now it is Quetzal’s turn to blow up, with his own long player ‘Vision’. ‘Vision’ explores a world of smooth grooves combined with more rootsy musical elements; 70′s Latin, Caribbean and Jamaican styles are clearly present, all seamlessly melded with more hip-hop and soul flavours. This is a nomadic sound – Quetzal is clearly a well travelled individual, and listening to ‘Vision’ feels like a journey through several diverse places. This is one for the beat journeymen and fans of Dusted Soul grooves and Tru Thoughts alike. ‘Vision’ also features guest vocals from Marie M, The Outabodies and Dye. While working on “Vison”, his forthcoming new album just started in 2007,Quetzal produced three tracks featured in the Boulangerie compilation, by the Fine Equipe. He is currently also working with many other diverse artists such as Dye, Leck Lips, Marie M, Nicolas Coyez, The Outabodies, Doods Mc, Enz, Mil, Fave . Check!

Gonjasufi aka Sumach Albums!

San Diego-bred yoga instructor Sumach Ecks turned from rapping with the Masters of the Universe crew and DJing with Killowattz to focus on his solo endeavors under the name Artist. In 2006, around the time he relocated to Las Vegas to teach yoga, he crossed paths with Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus, and the three established a bond. Ecks, who had been making lo-fi psychedelic hip-hop for his own enjoyment, recruited the two beatmakers to produce songs for him, which he would later enhance with his distinctive raspy vocals. After Ecks released the 7″ singles “Ancestors” and “Kowboyz & Indians,” the full-length A Sufi and a Killer (Warp) was released in 2010.

45 a.k.a. SWING-O,Japanese pianist/composer/producer mainly works in Tokyo club music scene with countless big names (Steph Pockets,KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE, Ai, Keyco,Kreva, etc). He joined more than 100 album as a producer, composer,pianist. He was a leader of izanami that are soul band. After that,He belongs to the band called JAMNUTS which is a project of Top 30 professional players in Tokyo. the Japanese artist who first grabbed our ears with the chunky funk of his debut — stepping out here as a much more fully-formed soul producer! The album’s title is well-put — as 45 brings a wide range of soul elements into play here — getting help from guests who include Stephanie McKay, Ryan Shaw, Marcellus Nealy, Jimmy Abney, and Suji Tap — all of whom flesh out the sound, and make for an album of really well-developed grooves! There’s still plenty of funk in the rhythms, but the instrumentation’s tighter too — instrumental soul at some points, and vocal soul at others — yet always with that kind of hip spin that we’ve come to love from Japanese artists over the past decade or so. Titles include “I Believe”, “Mysterious Journey”, “Another Place”, “Right Now”, “Big Man Hunting”, “Soul 2 Sole”, “Que Chevere”, “The Revenge Of Soul”, “The Dawn”, and “Nothing Feels Better Than You”.

Born in San Diego, California, Mind spent his early years submerged in musicianship. “My uncle was a drummer and my pops played a little bit of guitar. I was real young at the time, so my memory’s a bit fuzzy, but if there’s anything I can remember, it was always being in the garage playing with the drum set. I always had a thing for drums…something about the boom bap.” After making the move to the east coast at the age of 6, he somewhat drifted away from that musical atmosphere, only to be reunited with it in his middle – high school years where he observed his older brother making beats with FruityLoops. Fully embracing the beat making culture, Mind stayed focused, diligently perfecting his craft. As time passed, it was becoming more apparent that his passion was destined for the world to appreciate. Drawing influences from a multitude of musical genres (classic rock, funk, soul, progressive jazz, electronic, & obvious hip hop producers), he strives to maintain purity in self-expression. Mind’s pieces seem to embody an organic feel, taking you on a spiritual vacation through strong buildups and complex motifs.
