Famed trumpeter Terence Blanchard, one of today’s most influential jazz musicians, presents his Concord Jazz debut, Choices; an extraordinary piece of work that addresses the choices we all make in life – both as a society and on a personal level. The album features longstanding Blanchard band members Fabian Almazan on piano, Derrick Hodge on saxophone, Kendrick Scott on drums, Lionel Loueke on guitar and Walter Smith III on saxophone – all of whom significantly contributed to the album’s compositions. Featured guest artists include Dr. Cornel West [famed writer, speaker, educator and activist] and Bilal [singer, musician, composer].
Detroit deep jazz legends Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Marcus Belgrave and Doug Hammond collaborate with Detroit hero Carl Craig to explore more deep afro-jazz territory! Pioneering techno Dj, Carl Craig has been weaving a jazz thread through the fabric of his music for many years, including his work with the Innerzone Orchestra in the mid 1990′s as well as his critically accliamed ‘Detoit Experiment’ which brought together jazz, funk, Motown, Hip Hop and electronic musicians. Carl Craig has reunited the original Tribe members on ‘Rebirth’ aswell as inviting new artists along the way; keyboardist Amp Fiddler, drummers Karriem Riggins and Gayelynn McKinney (Harold’s daughter!), bassists Ralphe Armstrong and many more. The results are amazing with Carl Craig adding his futuristic space-like synths to Phil Ranelin’s trombone-led classic ‘Vibes From The Tribe’, ‘Rebirth’ retains its original funk infused spritual jazz magic first created in the 1970′s whilst incorporating a fresh new sound! (soundsoftheuniverse.com)

Personnel: Joan Belgrave (vocals); John Arnold (guitar); Keith Kaminski (saxophone); Mark Byerly (trumpet); John Rutherford (trombone); The Motor City Horns (horns); Kelvin Sholar (Fender Rhodes piano); Amp Fiddler, Pamela Wise (keyboards); Gayelynn Mckinney, Karriem Riggins (drums); Humberto “Andres” Hernandez (congas).

Gretchen Parlato’s voice is a thing of wonder. Striking the ideal balance between precision and flexibility, she is never predictable, blurring the lines between singer and instrumentalist as she takes a lyric–and at other times improvised flights of wordless fancy–to places it’s never before been. On In a Dream, her debut album for ObliqSound (released August 25, 2009), Parlato and her intuitive support team reinvent constantly, Parlato impeccably articulating in a voice so ethereal that the listener might very well feel that he or she is “in a dream.”

One would never have imagined that an unexhausted supply of amazing funky, groovy compositions and hidden treasures from the 1970s would emerge from the vaults and shed light on the world over 30 years later.

“Dramatic Funk Themes” is a collection of such gems, all of which originate from the archives of the Themes International Music Library. Soundtracks for scenes which did not exist at the time – sometimes action-packed, dramatic or driving – such as a high speed car chase – or sometimes more laid-back and relaxed like crusing in a ragtop through the city. These are the scenes played out over a musical backdrop loaded with wah-wah guitars, deep basslines, rhodes, clavinets, analogue synthesizers, hammond organs, flutes, razor-sharp brass, groovy percussion and solid drum beats.

The Themes International Library was founded in 1973 as an offshoot to its parent company KPM by England’s elite studio session musicians Alan Parker, Alan Hawkshaw, Mike Moran and Barry Morgan.
The sounds and arrangements from the Themes Library were way ahead of their time, with their classic breaks and beats, and remain today on the most wanted lists of rare groove collectors, DJs and hip-hop producers alike. Also worth noting is that, in addition to the recordings made in London, some were put to tape in Munich with the support of none less than the brass section of the Max Greger Orchestra!

Themes International Library LPs were never available for purchase by the general public and were pressed in small quantities solely for the purposes of supplying music samples to the radio, television, film and production houses. Nowadays one has to dig very deeply in the pockets in order to snap up these treasures on auction sites such as Ebay. Depending on the album, prices can lie in the range 40 to 400 US Dollars (e.g. “The All American Powerhouse”).

Both like their beats dusty and soulful with lots of crazy ish happening in between. Their DJ sets – two turntables, a stack of vinyl and a MPC are legendary. Twit and Hodn are right in the center of Cologne’s breeding hip-hop scene, working with everybody from Fleur Earth and the Retrogott to Miles Bonny, Frank Nirtty and Planet Asia. About the Hi-Hat Club: MPM have teamed up with photographer Robert Winter to take a look behind the beat, into the bedrooms and makeshift studios of today’s beat generation.

Loving executed third album by Build An Ark. Sounding like classic 70′s folk jazz! Well recommended! This record is their meditation on love – its varying forms and moods, its ecstatic and soothing powers. Build An Ark, under the production of Carlos Niño, have made an album which flows with a real range of volume and density, with arrangements and configurations contrasting against each other. The group has still kept their organic sound while adding several more layers, and charting a distinct progression from their previous two albums.

Vol.1

Will Quantic is known around the world for his blistering stage performances with his band the Quantic Soul Orchestra. His ear for a good tune, and his feel for a good rhythm didn’t come from nowhere – you see Quantic has been collecting rare funk 45s for years, and in that time he has absorbed every drum kick, every horn line and every guitar lick into his very soul. It’s hard to make good music without drawing upon good influence, so along with Quantic, Jazzman have unearthed some of the very best and rarest funk 45s known (and unknown) to man. These records are pure quality, the exorbitant prices that collectors will pay for the originals lays testament to that, and will stand the test of time as a barometer of good ol’ funky music that is truly inspirational. It’s a shame that the original 45s are so rare, with only a few hundred being pressed in many cases, but it is possible that with such rarity comes excellence, distinction and quality. Many tracks were never before reissued and all songs are fully licensed and restored from original sources.

There’s few folks we’d trust with our ears more than Will “Quantic” Holland – an artist we’ve come to love for his own funky music in recent years, and a collector who’s always driven to dig for the rarest bits possible! This time around, he’s allied with the Jazzman Records crew, in a sweet CD presentation of 16 rare tracks, some previously reissued on vinyl 45s by the label – now finally brought together in one amazing package that’s filled with vintage photos, original label scans, a “rarity guide”, and detailed notes on every single tune! Even if you’ve managed to score some of the Jazzman vinyl reissues, this overstuffed package is worth grabbing up as well – and like the first volume, the collaboration of Quantic and Jazzman means that the compilation’s about as funky as funky can be.

“Giovanni is back again in trio. His programme this time is delicately put together, ranging from traditional tunes (Dear old Stockolm), to standards (Alone Together, Impressions, Just one of those things), committed songs once again (Here’s to you, Le chant des Partisans) in the same spirit as Avanti!, new versions of Piazzola (Vuelvo al Sur) or of a film soundtrack (Convite para la Vida) and finally several personal compositions or dedications (to Pieranunzi)…It is a neat alternation between different styles and atmospheres, a smooth balance between profusion and restraint, the triggering of nostalgia and effects of surprise (the Latin treatment of Impressions). Under this avalanche of references, we will recognize the pianist’s main inspiration… the elegance of his phrasing, his mastery and generosity … excellent rhythm section and a magnificent sound…”
