Posted by dOk | Filed under 2012, Downtempo, Electronic

Can’t Kill A Dame With Soul is the second solo album from Kinny, an opera chanteuse turned singer-songwriter whose lifelong passion for reggae, jazz and soul music intertwines with her classical training for a unique and potent style. The new LP finds this self-proclaimed ‘freestyle improv vocalist’ channelling her trademark impulsive, freeform stylings into a more reflective set of deeply personal songs that explore escalating struggles with mental instability and identity.

Julien Dyne – Glimpse

Following on from the success of 2009’s “Pins and Digits”, Julien Dyne announces the release of his second full length album “Glimpse”. Stylistically a continuation of the futuristic elements hinted at on “Pins and Digits” “Glimpse” offers studies in shimmering melodies, woozy beds of rich harmonic sounds that pulsate over thick percussive backdrops. Featuring the vocal talents of She’s So Rad, Ladi 6, Parks, Mara TK (Electric Wire Hustle ) and Claire Duncan (Dear Time’s Waste) this record contains elements of soul and indie vocals against a backdrop of futuristic Hip Hop beats.

Black Sands came out in 2010 to almost universal critical acclaim and worldwide commercial success. Si Green aka Bonobo moved from being an underground producer of impeccable credentials to a poster boy for a new take on electronic music – contemporary and edgy but also soulful, song-based, sometimes lush but always emotional.
Black Sands Remixed gathers together a group of like-minded musicians and producers to interpret this classic album.

Do The Dilla 2012 “A Tribute To The Drum Master”
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2012

James Dewitt Yancey, better known under the name Jaydee or J-Dilla left us on february 10th 2006 at the age of 33. This american producer and composer has worked with a lot of artists such as Busta Rhymes, Common, Slum Village, A Tribe called Quest or Madlib. Through his creation, he in- fluenced many artists and musicians across the world which is not limited to the hip hop scene. Recognize by his peers for the imprint he has left in the musical landscape, this avant-garde is today considered like being simply a genius, a virtuoso, a precursor.
For the 6th year anniversary of his death, the Food for ya Soul collective (soundcloud.com/foodforyasoul), the silkscreen print Do the Right Print studio (dotherightprint.ch) & the label Feelin Music (feelinmusic.ch) came together around a common project in memory of J-Dilla. The Do The Dilla concept is born.
The idea is to bring together different artists to work and perpetuate J-Dilla’s art in order to give the audience a new visions of Dilla’s creations. A selection of beatmakers from across the world, as well as FFYS, DTRP & Feelin Music members worked for free to create a record containing Jaydee’s classics remixed.
The album is in line (and will be given away to the audience) with a live event called «Do The Dilla» which will take place on february 11th 2012 at Le Romandie in Lausanne with guests like Brussels own DJ Lefto from the famous jazz label Blue Note, Fatoosan from the Supafly collective along with Chief, founder of Feelin’ Music and of course the Helvetico- Belgian group Food for ya Soul in full force with Ngoc Lan, DJ Chikano, Mr Comb & Boo. Like last year, the event will be hosted by Parisian Gyver Hypman.

Shigeto – Lineage EP
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2012, Ambient, Electronic

Zach Saginaw consistently grounds his music in a deeply personal, familial context; his grandmother inspired two releases, his producer aliases, Shigeto and Frank Omura, both reference family names and it’s not for nothing that his latest release as Shigeto is titled Lineage.
While only Saginaw could speak to the ancestral motivation being referenced on the eight instrumental songs that comprise the mini-LP, Lineage, it’s easy to see it as an acknowledgement of debt to musical forebears, reverent respect due to the jazz, hip-hop, funk and folk that animates these eight songs. And while these elements aren’t new to Saginaw’s work, never has he demonstrated such complete command of his material. Each song is a complex constellation of sounds and ideas, but his compositional focus and restraint grounds songs that are otherwise cosmically inclined.

Sam Champ x Okayplayer – D’Angelo Live! [Mixtape]
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2012

You may have noticed me using the header Mixtape Mondays on a few posts recently–something we intend to make a semi-regular feature here at Okayplayer. We figured we would kick it off properly with an actual OKP mixtape; something official, something original, something exclusive. Something worthy to place alongside DJ Soul‘s incredible Best of Common and Dilla mixtapes. And then we was like, Hmm what’s happening the last monday in January that we could use as a theme? Superbowl? Newt Gingrich? Or MAYBE the phoenix-like reemergence of our beloved D’Angelo, who is currently spreading his fiery musical wings across the waters in Europe.
Accordingly, we asked super-thorough DJ/producer and Soulquarian obsessive Sam Champ (you may remember the tough remix of “Left & Right” from his remix LP) to cut together this official OKP D’Angelo Live mix for us. Most of these amazing live renditions of classic D’Angelo material have surfaced online in one form or the other before but Sam Champ has skillfully compiled them into one seamless blend to create the ultimate OKP fantasy concert for those of us not blessed enough to have been born Scandinavian. So without further ado, please find below one hour and twelve minutes (and some seconds) of streamable D’Angelo, recorded live on various stages across the world (and with a young Anthony Hamilton clearly audible on background vox in quite a few)–enough to keep all fly girls’ nipples and toes tingly with excitement until the arrival of a PURPORTED NEW D’ANGELO ALBUM SOMETIME LATER THIS YEAR. D’Angelo is back, baby. Mixtape Mondays is here. Get happy.
