40 Winks Albums!
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2002, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, Discography, Downtempo, Electronic, Hip Hop, Instrumental, Jazz Hop
40 Winks is an instrumental hip hop group made up of two producers – padmo’ and weedy – from Antwerp, Belgium.
40 Winks hit the scene in 2002, with a whole slew of laidback beats. Eager to share their sound with the world, they released a couple of albums independently. The attention they got from this, allowed them to build with people from around the world.
One of these independently released albums, More Than Loops, got reissued in Japan on Swamp Records, after that the ball kept rolling. On their first worldwide release, Extended Pleasure on Escapism Records (2005), they reached listeners well beyond the (instrumental) hip hop community with the song “melancholia”. After appearances on compilations, like Weapons of Hope on Little-D (2006), they got a chance to do their thing on the renowned label, Merck Records with Sound Puzzle (2007). All this led them back to Europe, where the German based Project: Mooncircle welcomed them with a spot on the compilation Heart on the right spot (2007) and a full album The Lucid Effect (2008). In 2009 they took some time off, doing solo stuff and remixes. In 2011 40 Winks is back with a double LP called It’s The Trip (2011) on Project: Mooncircle.

Young Montana? – Limerence
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2011, Downtempo, Electronic

Limerence is the debut album by Young Montana?, the 20 year-old producer who was plucked from obscurity out of Coventry, UK when Mary Anne Hobbs of the BBC Radio 1 anointed him as her “Favorite Unsigned Artist of 2010.”
Playful yet complex, the controlled chaos of Limerence displays Young Montana?’s pristine sense of sonic exploration. Showing remarkable skill with sample collage work, Young Montana? is running circles around anyone else attempting this sort of beat fusion right now.
A breathless and body-moving ride, Limerence has a completely new sound and is the fresh slap to the face you’ve been waiting for.

40 Winks – It’s The Trip
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2011, Downtempo, Electronic, Hip Hop

No hay banda! (“there is no band”, Mulholland Dr. 2001) pretty much sums up where 40 Winks aims to go with its instrumental hip hop: meticulously chop and paste samples together, to create an atmosphere of beats and vibes which steps beyond unimaginative loops. “Join 40 Winks on a road trip to anywhere. Bring your music player and tell your honey you won’t be home for dinner. It’s the trip, not the destination.“

Taylor McFerrin – Place In My Heart EP
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2011, Downtempo

Place in My Heart feat. RYAT is the debut single off of Taylor McFerrin’s full length LP Early Riser, due out on Brainfeeder in 2011. The song represents a style that many haven’t previously heard from the Brooklyn based producer. Leaning heavily on layered guitars and dense swirling effects, the music is dark and soulful, with a tone somewhere between beauty and pain. A fitting match for the subject matter of RYAT’s lyrics, which are a letter to a loved one contemplating suicide. RYAT is a Philadelphia based Singer/Producer, who’s album Avant Gold sparked Taylor’s desire to collaborate on the track, which he felt was a perfect match for her distinct vocals. If Place in My Heart represents one thing listeners can expect from the Early Riser LP as a whole, it’s that McFerrin is more than willing to expand his sound in all directions. The tune was recently selected as an “All Year Winner” on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Radio show on BBC 1 and remains on heavy rotation. The music video, directed by Simon Benjamin, stars Taylor’s brother Jevon McFerrin and actress Stephanie De Latour, and is a perfect visualization of the story and emotion of the single.

La Funk Mob – Tribulations Extra Sensorielles
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1994, Downtempo, Electronic

Although MC Solaar was the only French rapper of note during the ’90s, several hip-hop production crews made inroads in the quintessentially American style, including DJ Cam, the Mighty Bop, and La Funk Mob. The latter team was formed by Boom Bass and Philippe Zdar in the early ’90s, though Boom Bass had worked with Solaar on his first two solo albums, weaving samples from Black Sheep to Serge Gainsbourg. The act debuted with a track on the 1993 compilation album Jimmy Jay Présente ‘Les Cool Sessions’ and signed to Britain’s seminal Mo’Wax for two 1994 EPs, Tribulations Extra Sensorielles and Casse les Frontieres, Fou les Têtes en L’air (“Breaking Boundaries, Messing Up Heads”). Little was heard from the duo during 1997-1998, though two side-projects (Motorbass and L’homme Qui Valait 3 Milliard) saw release, and Boom Bass again provided production work for MC Solaar on his third album, Paradisiaque. The duo resurfaced as Cassius in 1999 for the purpose of French progressive house.

Skalpel – Konfusion
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2005, Downtempo, Electronic, Future Jazz

Polish duo Skalpel return with their second album for Ninja Tune and it’s a deeper, darker, more satisfying journey into the roots of Eastern European jazz and breaks than they have ever managed before. Very much one for jazzers, beat heads and strong cigarette smokers, “Konfusion” is an album to soundtrack your espresso breaks and to play so that you don’t have to read Jean Paul Sartre. These boys are celebrities in their mother country, which suggests that the Poles have slightly better taste than we do.

Ammoncontact – With Voices
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2006, Downtempo, Electronic, Hip Hop

Carlos Niño and Fabian Ammon have long been fulcrums of LA Black music, perfectly poised between the jazz crowd centered around Dwight Trible and classic group’s like the Army of Healers and Build An Ark, the underground hip hop scene which grew from the Good Life and Project Blowed collectives and the heavy soul-beat sound of the likes of Sa Ra and Madlib. “With Voices” is the album that Ammoncontact have been waiting to make – the point where the duo’s own loping, deep production style could be melded, as the title has it, with the voices around them. The results are scinitillating, a hip hop album bursting with spirituality and positivity and a unique ambience.

Andreya Triana – Lost Where I Belong
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Downtempo, Neo Soul

The widely hyped debut album from Ninja Tune’s latest rising star, Andreya Triana, Lost Where I Belong is a jazzy, noir-ish soul album that gives a full introduction to a vocal talent who’s previously worked with Flying Lotus, Theo Parrish and Mr Scruff, among others. The production and arrangements here ooze class (if, indeed, class can be a commodity that lends itself to the act of oozing) and that’s surely thanks to Bonobo’s Simon Green who man’s the controls on Lost Where I Belong. You may recall Triana gracing the latest Bonobo LP, supplying vocals to several tracks on the Black Sands tracklist, and the results on that occasion proved that these two certainly know how to bring the best out of one another. This time around, the musical accompaniment is considerably more subdued and organic, leaving Triana’s arresting vocal to take the central role. ‘Draw The Stars’ sets the scene with its ethereal plucked strings and woody rhythms, calling upon a flourish of orchestration when the moment comes. The remainder of the album is similarly well poised and resourceful, capturing a glazed over, downbeat feel that adds a little extra muscle and nuance to what might otherwise have come perilously close to a Morcheeba-esque exercise in trip-hop easy listening. Triana’s talents as a vocalist are what really come through clearest on this release though, and she proves suitably spellbinding whether she’s fronting uptempo, edgy soul numbers like ‘A Town Called Obsolete’ or the haunting chamber-folk of closer ‘X’.

TM Juke – Maps From The Wilderness
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2003, Downtempo, Electronic, Hip Hop

A cohesion of beautiful melodies and rugged beats, “Maps from the Wilderness” is an accomplished album that should earn TM Juke the same accolades as fellow Tru Thoughts album acts Quantic, Jon Kennedy and Bonobo (who now record for Grand Central and Ninja Tune respectively). Having recorded various songs for Tru Thoughts under the guise of Al Stylus, TM Juke took it upon himself to adopt a name suitable for styles and sounds he wished to explore with this album. The styles are varied and they seem to span the full orchestral range; rolling timpani drums underpin hazy beats whilst delicate guitars flitter amongst intricate strings. As a producer, TM Juke draws on funk, soul, hip-hop and jazz influences, but adds a greater depth and maturity with immaculate arrangements that belie his twenty three years and give “Maps of the Wilderness” a strikingly original yet strangely familiar feel.

Flanger – Outer Space/Inner Space
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2001, Downtempo, Electronic, Future Jazz

Flanger is the piss-take version of the Compost Records thing – Germans with samplers appropriating jazz. Not only do Burnt Friedman (Drome, Nonplace Urban Field) and Uwe Schmidt (Atom(tm)) do their wanking while wearing smirks – humor being a very rare commodity among Teutonic jazzbos – they don’t shy away from the conceptual implications of what they do either (pontificating is another no-no for cool studio cats). The liner notes, for instance, claim that the title is inspired by a J.G. Ballard essay, and offer a rambling, half-bullshit/half-on-to-something critical analysis of the album’s music in a marvelous spoof of real jazz sleeve commentary.

Comfort Fit – Never Look Back EP
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2007, Downtempo, Hip Hop

On this seven track ep you will find a broad perspective of sounds and flavours ranging from hip hop, street soul, beats to nu- jazz, with exellent vocal contributions by Mercury Waters (spitkickers.com), Blaktroniks and Nicole Hadfield. These cripsy beats are ripe with thumping funk and jazz influences, sample wizardry and daring shuffles. Composed with the help of unique sound plugins which were especially programmed to measure Comfort Fit’s needs and wishes, we think the chances aren’t bad that you’ll fall for the unique sound signature, bounce and elegance of this tight hip hop production. Like the best mixtapes this thing plays even strongly as a whole – no matter if it’s about classic jazz impressions like Miles of Smiles, scarily deep intergalactic grooves as in Astro Dancin´or the hip hop bomb State of Mind, all the tracks are locked together closely. The Never Look Back EP is more than just beat fodder for your next mixtape, “it’s a very personal diary of mine. I feel music is my natural form of expression, not words”, as Comfort Fit says. “It is very important for me to escape from the noise pollution of the cities and from the media hypes going on. I’d rather create my own”. This is the perfect masterpeice for the leftfield, opendminded dj´s and music conaisseurs.

Noorda – Noorda
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2002, Downtempo

A Swiss typical studiò between the mountains. This is the first approach of Noorda to listeners, an image even before sounds setting the mood that seems to belong to northern Europe instead of a Latin country. This confers to Noorda’s music an accessible picture for listeners able to benift from the warmth the album seems to give off, both physically and mentally.
This album finds its own place in the world of electronic music creating a soundtrack to ponder with your emotions, thoughts and states of mind. They achieve this generally starting from a simple voice or a plain guitar proving that in music less can be best. Quite particular is the constant reboiling sensation at the core of the whole sound; melodic and profound yet weaved with strong elements that sometimes find a brief second to emerge and then disappear again.

Urbs & Cutex – Peace Talks
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2003, Downtempo, Electronic, Hip Hop

Paul Nawrata and David Schuller, better known as Urbs & Cutex, Urbs & Cutex are two scientists on their own mission, leaving trends and hypes behind, to focus on what’s most important: the music. “Peace Talks!” takes the listener on a journey, discovering a whole new sound universe. Deeply rooted in mid 90´s Hip Hop, their sound has matured since “Breaks of Dawn”. While their minimalistic debut was more of a DJ Tool (still being a pure pleasure for homelistening sessions) the “Peace Talks” tracks are more structured, reminding us of classical songwriting. Paul and David are taking us back into a time when MPC 60´s and SP 1200´s were the instruments of choice, before the 303´s and Triton´s took over Hip Hop. Back into a time when rap records consisted of loops, before soul was replaced by cold electronic bleep sounds and being ‘jiggy’ was all that. But don’t be mistaken, Urbs & Cutex are not retro or strictly Hip Hop. These guys have the gift to capture the “mid 90´s New York flavour” and combine it with the state of the art sound that we all love listening to nowadaysIt’s all about the magic of a loop!
