Mwëslee – Eurocarne EP
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Downtempo, Electronic

Nod Navigators welcomes back Spain’s Mweslee, the Spanish production wizard is responsible for the label’s second release. As one of his country’s foremost representati ve of the new beat generation he mashes together wide ranging influences and production techniques into a heady blend from his home-base of Vigo. One of the founding members of Spain’s Arkestra Collective, he was a participant at the RBMA in ‘05 and a performer at the Sonar festival in both ’06 and ’09. His output has been rather slow since his debut, with key releases on Beat Dimensions and All City records, setting him up perfectly for a return to the fore with ‘Eurocarne’, an EP born of his desire to reflect a wider range of musical preferences that have helped shape both his sound but also his production approach, from disco to pop, R’n’B to experimental.

Paul White – Paul White & The Purple Brain
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Downtempo, Electronic, Hip Hop

This album is based entirely around the music of ST Mikael, an incredible Swedish psych-rock artist who has been recording weird and wonderful records since the 1990s. Mikael’s music is heavy on Eastern influences and otherworldly concerns, and ranges from searing electric guitar-led dirges to dreamlike ballads to ghostly atmospheric experiments. Sometimes all within the same song. Paul White has reimagined and remoulded and Mikael’s sounds, and added his own, to make an intriguing and mesmerising album that sounds unlike anyone else but him. It’s recognisably hip hop (just check ‘Marshen Signals’) but it’s psychedelic, spontaneous and free in a way that seems far from most definitions of the genre today. A fascinating album from a fascinating producer.

Daisuke Tanabe – Before I Forget
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Downtempo, Electronic

Patience is a virtue, and few know that better than understated electronic beat-maker Daisuke Tanabe. After carefully honing his craft from the age of 16, it was his first EP release in 2006 that really brought him to the attention of Gilles Peterson and Pete Adarkwah. Since then he has remixed artists such as Elan Mehler and Aaron Jerome, and released music on labels like Ninja Tune, BBE, and Brownswood Recordings. Taking inspiration from jazz, folk, and reggae as well as the whole canon of electronic music, this member of Tony Nwachukwu’s CD-R community knows that notes and melodies are just the guidelines for the feelings that lie beneath. Dig a bit deeper and you’re guaranteed to strike gold.

Funkineven – She’s Acid / Must Move
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Downtempo, Electronic

After the success of the Kleer EP, West London’s Funkineven returns for his second release, the double sided, riotous dancefloor work out that is She’s Acid/Must Move. Resurrecting the spirits of Moroder, Art Of Noise and Marshall Jefferson through a modem powered Ouija board, whilst simultaneously hand writing a love letter to the inventors of lazer technology, Roland drum machines and sex toys. It’s deep and beautiful dance music: digital, analogue, delicate and physical.

Bei Bei and Shawn Lee – Into the Wind
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Downtempo, Electronic, Nu Jazz

Into the Wind marries a unique blend of ancient tradition with studio trickery. Eschewing all notions of superficial “Asian-fusion,” this uplifting, genre-bending sound clash, recalls the afro centric harping of Dorothy Ashby and hypnotic spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane. With Lee adding equal doses of hip hop, electric jazz, and soul sensibility to the backing tracks, the captivating sound of Bei Bei’s Guzheng (a 2000 year old Chinese string instrument) comes alive on peaceful mellow joints as much as it does on Kung-Fu flavored funk tunes.

Bonobo – Black Sands

Simon Green aka Bonobo returns with his fourth, most eagerly-anticipated and most accomplished album to date, the magnificent Black Sands. Green proves once and for all with Black Sands that he is an artist and producer with his sights set on much higher prizes than to rule any dusty subgenre of dance music. This is a record of epic reach and massive emotional pull, all held together by Green’s understanding of composition and arrangement of live instruments (most of them also played by him) as well as his complete mastery of the tricks and techniques of the digital age. Black Sands is the most contemporary record he has ever made.
