Veebeeo – Instrumentality

null

VeeBeeO aka Tim Lundblad was born in the city of Stockholm in 1981. Growing up with musicians as parents he was constantly surrounded by all kinds of music, something that came to be the foundation for the special blend he now produces, as well as his love for good music of all genres. He began playing drums at the age of 8 and a few years later he also took interest in keyboard, bass, guitar, making beats and the art of recording, with time turning him into the multiskilled muscian/producer/songwriter he is today. Veebeo appears on the already highly acclaimed Beat Dimensions project (Rush Hour) and now comes his debut 12” EP “Instrumentality”. A 6 track EP with headnodding beats for ya eardrums, CHECK!

Funkineven – She’s Acid / Must Move

null

After the success of the Kleer EP, West London’s Funkineven returns for his second release, the double sided, riotous dancefloor work out that is She’s Acid/Must Move. Resurrecting the spirits of Moroder, Art Of Noise and Marshall Jefferson through a modem powered Ouija board, whilst simultaneously hand writing a love letter to the inventors of lazer technology, Roland drum machines and sex toys. It’s deep and beautiful dance music: digital, analogue, delicate and physical.

Charles Trees – The Dream

Hallucinatory bump-soul-tronics from Charles Trees courtesy of French imprint Musique Large, the first in a pan global series of producer EP’s from around the planet called Tour De Table. Trees is a Michigan producer with a clear love of psyched up R&B and slo-mo funk styles, rubbed up with the kind of schizoid beat patterns resonant of fellow Musique Large peoples, Debruit and Fulgeance. Mindesign – Lights and Tunnels

null

Born in San Diego, California, Mind spent his early years submerged in musicianship. “My uncle was a drummer and my pops played a little bit of guitar. I was real young at the time, so my memory’s a bit fuzzy, but if there’s anything I can remember, it was always being in the garage playing with the drum set. I always had a thing for drums…something about the boom bap.” After making the move to the east coast at the age of 6, he somewhat drifted away from that musical atmosphere, only to be reunited with it in his middle – high school years where he observed his older brother making beats with FruityLoops. Fully embracing the beat making culture, Mind stayed focused, diligently perfecting his craft. As time passed, it was becoming more apparent that his passion was destined for the world to appreciate. Drawing influences from a multitude of musical genres (classic rock, funk, soul, progressive jazz, electronic, & obvious hip hop producers), he strives to maintain purity in self-expression. Mind’s pieces seem to embody an organic feel, taking you on a spiritual vacation through strong buildups and complex motifs. Equipped with cosmic textures & soulful harmonies, he invites you to open your ears, as well as your heart. “If there’s anything I’m looking to achieve through my music, it’s reminding folks that Love is all you need.”

Samiyam Albums!

Sam Baker, alias Samiyam, is an instrumental Hip-Hop producer from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is best known for his work with experimental producer, Flying Lotus, and his 8-bit Video Game inspired Hip-Hop beats. Ann Arbor’s latest prodigal son and lover of sprinkles on doughnuts, takes the legacy of all Detroit’s talented musical sons and daughters and makes Hip Hop beats filled with snippets of Soul, Funk, 70’s Italian horror flick soundtracks, Nintendo bonus level music, and 90’s Hip Hop. Somehow, with this much content, the beats still manage to sound gloriously minimal and disjointed. Fans like Benji B, Andrew Meza and XLR8R have been eagerly snapping up his tracks, as Sam freeze frames Electro energy and spits it back out as twisted future Jazz. Dabrye is a fan, Daedelus describes him as “a thrilling sound to break the sameness,” and Flying Lotus is his brother in arms (they collaborate on the project FLYamSAM).

Pursuit Grooves – Fox Trot Mannerisms

null

Hyper-healthy astro-hiphop grooves from Brooklyn’s Pursuit Grooves landing quite unexpectedly on Tectonic. It’s a brave departure for a label that’s solely associated with dubstep but one that pays off in incredible style with seven tracks of unheard styles akin to Pattie Blingh plugging into Fly Lo’s Sendai and setting her vectors for Sun Ra’s space temple in sector 17. Her lyrics commendably deal with conscious issues but to be honest we’re pretty distracted by her intuitively spiraling space grooves to give them our full attention. From the stooped hiphop swing of ‘Pressure’ to the decaying astro-step rhythms and slivers of Moog on ‘Mr Softee’ through to the ultra-modern disco of ‘Shabaps’ or the lucid juke-boogie dreams of ‘Whisper’ Vanese Smith is giving us the future on a plate and we’re hungry as f*ck. ‘Fox Trot Mannerisms’ is quite a stunning collection that should take a few minutes to settle in, but a few months to really get a grip on. Recommended to fans of owt from Toro Y Moi to Ras G and back again – very very good indeed.

Take – Only Mountain

null

Alpha Pup is proud to present Only Mountain, the newest release from L.A.-based beat producer Take. His most powerful and fully realized work to date, Only Mountain serves as a complete affirmation of Take’s ten prolific years in music production. Although prominently featured on seminal releases such as From L.A. With Love and this year’s All City 10-inch, Take is poised to make the greatest impact of his career with his newest sonic creation.

From Only Mountain‘s opening salvo, “Before You Think,” it is clear that Take has claimed his rightful place amongst the beat scene’s leading luminaries. A dusty off-kilter space stomp, the track lays the ground work for an album’s worth of hazy electronic textures and intergalactic breakbeats. Case in point: “Incredibright,” a no-holds-barred haymaker of astro-hop swagger. On “Implosions,” one of the albums more introspective tracks, Take drags us through a spaced out journey of low-end stabs and bit-crushed melodies.

A dense and groundbreaking work, Take’s Only Mountain stands as a staggering collection of gorgeously brilliant melodies and deep subharmonic bass. Truly future music towards a brighter end.

Ras G – El-Alylien Part 1

null

Ras returns from planet X with a six track EP of abstract dub-hop head pressure. With ‘El Alyien Part 1′ it soon becomes obvious that we’ve caught Ras at his most esoteric. The first four tracks are a bong-eyed blend of rich field recordings and crackly samples knitted togther with a bed of psychoactively charged subbass. There’s almost no telling where each track starts and stops if you weren’t looking at the screen, lending an intuitive and expressionist collage feel to the set. GB’s remix brings up the rear with a spherical rerub of the second track, sounding a little like the Delia Derbyshire just smoked a blunt with Dilla. Recommended!

All City 7×7 Beatstrumental Series

LINKS REMOVED IN REQUEST OF ALL CITY RECORDS

This is the Beatstrumental Series of All City Records release in 2008, if I remember correctly were pressed only 500 copies per vinyl, enjoy!

Snowman – 1X7

Snowman – A member of the Jack Sample Professionals (Fat City), djing over 10 years plus beatmaking the last few he went on some Detroit I to the L.L A and swapped the blue collar and harsh winters of the Motor City for Los Angeles’s sun and herb. Locked away in the Hollywood Hills he opens the series with a bang on Street Corner Music (previewed on Benji’s Deviation some time back if you heard) and goes for the concept on the flip. Currently working with Shawn Jackson and Guilty Simpson amongst others you’re going to be seeing the name with increasing frequency over the coming year.

Tracklist

01. Street Corner Music
02. Rise

Mike Slott – 2X7

Mike Slott – Having already made a splash with his potna Hudson Mohawke as one half of the Heralds of Change the Slott Machine goes for delf in 2008. Following his recent track for the recent Nicole Willis Remix CD he hits us with yet more soulful concrete slabs of broken niceness with “Knock Knock” and flip side “My Lightbridge” . Listen Up – Two heavy slices of stuttered melodic heat reet here.

Tracklist

01. Knock Knock
02. My Lightbridge

Fulgeance – 3X7

Fulgeance – French beat maker Fulgeance steps up to the plate for the third release in the Beat Series. Fresh from his well received EP Chico on Musique Large he takes his queue from the ’84 B movie of the same name and gives us some French fonk. Check the flip and you’ll find like on many a dusty 45 a more reflective mood with “Mamie Thè”

Tracklist

01. Revenge Of the Nerd
02. Mamie The

Mweslee – 4X7

Mweslee – Spainish beat maker Mweslee of the Arkestra collective drops the fourth beat 45 in the All City Beat series. You may already know him from his Megaplast EP and he has his debut LP – Primer – out soon (both via Kindred Spirits). Mweslee is known for instrumental hip hop with an added electronic twist and this is his first vinyl release of 2008. 2 slabs of busy, layered, soulful niceness “Chandal 500″ with “Jamas Jame Jamon” on the flip side.

Tracklist

01. Chandal 500
02. Jamas Jame Jamon

Le N?ko- 5X7

Le n?ko – Up to number 5 in the All City Beat series now, this 45 on 33 comes from French beat maker Le n?ko (Le neko). Unfamilar to most, no doubt, but trust us on this one! He says: “My name is le N?KO, i do the beats my mind and fingers let me do.” We say: A double A with two Slices of bumping broken French fonk “Akedam” and “Apprendre” from the Lyon based producer who has been making some noise online over the last couple of years via myspace and ampsoul radio in particular. He has recently produced a track for Maspyke (ABB) MC Hanif Jamyls summer release “Krushed Grapes” but this is his first solo vinyl release.

Tracklist

01. Akedam
02. Apprendre

Hudson Mo – 6X7

Hudson Mohawke – Genre Defying, Experimental Scottish producer is the name on everyone’s lips right now. Many styles…in the last couple of years he has released records as part of the Heralds of Change, gone for delf on Beat Dimensions, Ubiquity, thrown out some twisted edits via Wireblock with future flavas to come via Warp. Not afraid to confound expectations and drop the completely unexpected, this record is unpredictably predictably incredible. 3 tracks, 45 on 33, present yet another twist to this remarkably multi faceted producer who can take any sound he wants ..and straight smash it!

Tracklist

01. Star Crackout
02. Root Hands
03. Everybody Else Is Wrong

Onra – 7X7

Onra – #7 of 7 from French beatmaker Onra is a double sided dose of French bruk hip hop soul with a nod to the East. The young Parisian is already 2 LP’s deep – his incredible 2007 Chinoiseries LP is paid homage to Far Eastern pop music with beats plucked from Vietnamese records picked up on holidays. Alongside Quetzal he has released two “Tribute” EPs which layered soul samples with a hip hop backbone. As if that’s not enough he has just released his second solo LP – “1.0.8” which again looks across the globe for its inspiration, made up of Indian samples so it’s a delight for us to have him round off the year and the series with the lush “My Comet” and flip side “Shhhhhhh”.

Tracklist

01. My Comet
02. Shhhhhhh

Dimlite – 7X7X0

Dimlite – #8 of 7 is the last 45 in the beat series, a bonus to coincide with a limited CD compilation of all 7 45s of the series. This 45 comes from Swiss beatmaker, Sonar Kollectiv artist and serial re-mixer Dimlite. Crossing between sick 80s style new wave Zappaesque dirt into dreamy futuristic soul tinged indie-smurf folk. 5 minutes of madness layered with vocals, scratches and a hip hop beat it comes on shiny yellow vinyl with an instrumental/dub on the flip and is an appropriately eccentric end to the series.
