Franco Micalizzi – Roma A Mano Armata
Posted by dOk | Filed under 1976, Funk

Funky Franco Micalizzi – the soundtrack to the mid 70s Italian crime drama Roma A Mano Aramata – prime pulpy grooves laid down for the Umberto Lenzi film! It’s great stuff, funky drums and bassline puncuated by brass, flute and tense strings – with a heavy, insistent groove all the way, with a few slower and quieter sequences setting up some drama to come before falling headfirst into the more action oriented style. Franco Micalizzi – Stridulum

A soundtrack steeped in Euro funk and disco from Franco Micalizzi – his work for Stridulum, also known as The Visitor – a wild film starring John Huston as Jerzy – as a being from outerspace with telekinetic earthling offspring and a crazy cast that includes Glenn Ford, Shelly Winters , Sam Pekinpah and Lance Henriksen! Somehow, this plot provides for a soundtrack filled with funky bass and drums, flute, breathlessly cooed wordless vocals and other 70s dancefloor touches! Live Tropical Fish – The Day Is Too Short To Be Selfish
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Funk, Soul

The new project of Live Tropical Fish is born from the fusion of three complementary and symbiotic creative minds: the successful encounter of the original founders Fabrizio “Doc Bix” Poli and Antonio “Lurpak” Fernè with the eclectic guitarist-composer Salvo Pignanelli: what was born out of it was a new creative push along with the unconsciousness of jumping into an enterprise that only brave visionaries of music would do. The “Fernè, Pignanelli and Poli” trio started a production that soon appeared to be timeless: with a general crisis of record industry going on the goal was to create something that would go against the flow, a “handmade” album by craftsmen-musicians, exactly like it was done in the 70’s, without the harassment of marketing logics or the frenzy of disposable music.
Due to a profound musical concept every guest artist present in the album has been chosen for personal respect, intrinsic value, interpretative originality or just pure congeniality. This is how the Tropical Fish album came to life, by an alchemic process of transformation, combining, assembling, feeding, but with the capability of giving shape to a precise and personal stylistic identity. The primordial power of the rhythmic bases has unavoidably influenced the horns’ arrangements created by Adriano Pancaldi, that result at times edgy at times symphonic, always capable of complex and articulated support to melody, at times substituting the tune, at times making it richer.
From afrobeat we borrowed the feeling of a fully played and hard-won music, perfectly identifiable, instrument by instrument, note by note, without ever taking short-cuts, that looks back to what the masters of black music have always done: play live.
After all, the name Live Tropical Fish contains the intention itself, live music has always been the core target of the project: a music that finds in live playing its highest expressive capability, of comunicating and sharing emotions.

VA – Dramatic Funk Themes Vol. 1-2-3
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2008, 2009, 2011, Funk
One would never have imagined that an unexhausted supply of amazing funky, groovy compositions and hidden treasures from the 1970s would emerge from the vaults and shed light on the world over 30 years later.
“Dramatic Funk Themes” is a collection of such gems, all of which originate from the archives of the Themes International Music Library. Soundtracks for scenes which did not exist at the time – sometimes action-packed, dramatic or driving – such as a high speed car chase – or sometimes more laid-back and relaxed like crusing in a ragtop through the city. These are the scenes played out over a musical backdrop loaded with wah-wah guitars, deep basslines, rhodes, clavinets, analogue synthesizers, hammond organs, flutes, razor-sharp brass, groovy percussion and solid drum beats.
The Themes International Library was founded in 1973 as an offshoot to its parent company KPM by England’s elite studio session musicians Alan Parker, Alan Hawkshaw, Mike Moran and Barry Morgan.
The sounds and arrangements from the Themes Library were way ahead of their time, with their classic breaks and beats, and remain today on the most wanted lists of rare groove collectors, DJs and hip-hop producers alike. Also worth noting is that, in addition to the recordings made in London, some were put to tape in Munich with the support of none less than the brass section of the Max Greger Orchestra!
Themes International Library LPs were never available for purchase by the general public and were pressed in small quantities solely for the purposes of supplying music samples to the radio, television, film and production houses. Nowadays one has to dig very deeply in the pockets in order to snap up these treasures on auction sites such as Ebay. Depending on the album, prices can lie in the range 40 to 400 US Dollars (e.g. “The All American Powerhouse”).

Shawn Lee’s Incredible Tabla Band – Tabla Rock
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2011, Funk

The original Incredible Bongo Band’s “Bongo Rock” is firmly cemented into musical history having provided the oft sampled (and completely irresistible) “Apache” drum break for a million and one producers to cut up. Also known as Michael Viner’s Incredible Bongo Band, the project was born in 1972. Viner, a record artist manager and executive at MGM Records, was making use of MGM recording facilities in down-time, recruiting whichever studio musicians were on-hand. Ringo Starr is rumored to have played on some tracks. They made two albums of funky, instrumental music filled with covers of popular songs of the day and heavily relying on bongo drums, conga drums, rock drums and brass.
Over 3 decades after its inception UK producer, and avid record collector, Shawn Lee was marveling at the fact that there had never been an Indian style, sitar and tabla-heavy, version of the Incredible Bongo Band masterpiece “Apache.” “Such an obvious track, I still find it hard to believe that one doesn’t already exist. (It is hella’ obscure if it does…) “Apache” is one of the greatest and most famous drum-breaks of all time,” says Lee. Not content with covering just “Apache,” Lee decided he’d take on the entire Bongo Band debut album; and also two of his favorite tracks from their second album for good measure. “Why cover a song when you can cover a whole album? This is the road to madness my friend, and it is my preferred route!” he adds.

The Fantastics! – All The People
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2011, Funk

The Fantastics! first began to take shape in 2003 after organist/pianist Greg Boraman departed the ranks of the acclaimed deep funk outfit The Soul Destroyers (Jazzman Records) and answered the call to fill the keyboard seat in Reverend Cleatus & The Soul Saviours, the previous incarnation of the band that released their debut album 2LBs Of Funk on French label Soul Cookers Records.
Whilst the band indeed loved heavy funk with a passion, they also wanted to incorporate other styles that had shaped their open minded musical lives: jazz, Brazilian, afrobeat, rhythm & blues, rock, boogie, latin, reggae: the full spectrum of influences which each musician individually brought to the table! Finding that they soon tired of the narrow and formulaic restrictions that the purely retro funk genre saddled them with, and a new plan began to come together.
Changing their name to The Fantastics!, they re-launched with the Cheeba’s Couch 45 (on Raw Wax), an aggressive funk-rock assault to highlight a deliberate widening of musical textures and influences the band were eager to explore.
Now in 2011, The Fantastics second album is another step in the London band’s long musical journey. The musical transition continues on All The People which features vocalist Sulene Fleming on several tracks, one of the UK’s most versatile and capable singers of her generation! Add to this great musicianship and strong original compositions such as Somewhere Finally, the shimmering and beautiful summer love song that drips with deep soulful, horn hook lines, and of course Sulenes’ soaring vocals, the moody and atmospheric Know No Gods, the southern blues inflected groove of Cold Case and the full on, strident funk-rock grit of I Breath all demonstrate how The Fantastics! have finally arrived at their musical destination with a highly eclectic sound for today which pays respect to the past without being shackled to it.

Shaolin Afronauts – Flight Of The Ancients
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2011, Funk

The mysterious afro-soul of The Shaolin Afronauts first echoed across the dance floors of Australia in late 2008. Heavily inspired by the sounds of 1970′s West Africa, Ethiopia and the pioneering avant-garde jazz artists of the same period, The Shaolin Afronauts draw on the this highly innovative and sometimes volatile era in music, using it as inspiration to create music with the same fire and intensity. Though there is something refreshing and original about the Afronauts, their music could be described as somewhere in between the heavy Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Ethio-Jazz of Mulatu Astatke. The key to the Shaolin Afronauts unique sound is the line-up, which comprises of a three piece horn section, 5 piece rhythm section and three percussionists, and this polyrhythmic approach layers the groups sound with a mesmerizing and hypnotic texture.
