Saxophonist and composer Gianni Gebbia is deeply influenced by Ornette Coleman and the late Jim Pepper. His trio with drummer Vittorio Villa and bassist Lelio Giannetto — and guest Massimo Simonine helping out on electronics and turntables and keyboards — delves deeply into the simple repetitive melodies Coleman is so famous for, and turns them into epics. This is a music based in the most basic elements of harmonic construction, where a melody can be created and deconstructed while it continues to play through the listener’s mind as the improvisation moves over it. It is never totally absent in the ensemble’s playing, such as in the amazing “Verso Kamarina,” with either Gebbia or Villa carrying the essence of that melody through a blowing fest that is adorned with all manner of electronic trickery by Simonine. Elsewhere, on “Immer Gerardeaus,” the lyric sensibility seems absent amid the wooly free jazz improvising, but, nonetheless, it is there, somewhere between horn and bass, spitting itself out in bits and pieces like jagged shards of pretty glass. The title track (dedicated to cartoonist Berke Breathed) is a shambolic exploration of a high register line that is adorned by percussion and a droning bassline. Here, too, the melody is in the line itself that seems to come from a non-Western source. Finally, Gebbia’s true genius comes to play in “Shamal,” a monolithic work that crosses jazz boundaries into North African street music, Middle Eastern chant, and vanguard lyricism á la Don Cherry’s MU albums. The interplay between the sampled voices and Gebbia’s alto is unsettling it’s so close, and the droning rhythms of Villa and Giannetto that are guided through the knots by Simonine’s electric piano are truly hypnotic. There is no resolution in this piece as it moves through you rather than around you; it encapsulates everything within itself and then just buries it whole. This is in its own way a very confrontational, yet very listenable, work of Italian vanguard jazz. Amazing.

Flanger is the piss-take version of the Compost Records thing – Germans with samplers appropriating jazz. Not only do Burnt Friedman (Drome, Nonplace Urban Field) and Uwe Schmidt (Atom(tm)) do their wanking while wearing smirks – humor being a very rare commodity among Teutonic jazzbos – they don’t shy away from the conceptual implications of what they do either (pontificating is another no-no for cool studio cats). The liner notes, for instance, claim that the title is inspired by a J.G. Ballard essay, and offer a rambling, half-bullshit/half-on-to-something critical analysis of the album’s music in a marvelous spoof of real jazz sleeve commentary.

Skalpel are nu jazz DJs and musicians, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło, from Wrocław in Poland. Their musical style is a distinctive blend of hip hop beats, laced with samples lifted from the rich seam of Polish jazz records of the 1960s and 1970s. In 2000, after interviewing DJ Vadim for a Polish hip hop magazine, Skalpel discussed samples, obscure breaks and the Polish music scene with him. That led to a combined tour with Skalpel and Vadim’s live band, The Russian Percussion, during which they performed with four turntables. Later that year, Skalpel released a demo CD entitled “Polish Jazz”, which gained praise in from the Polish music press.

Nicola Conte is an Italian DJ, producer and guitar player known for introducing an innovative style of acid jazz that incorporates bossa nova themes, melodies drawn from Italian film scores of the 1960s, easy listening themes, and ethnic Indian music.

Conte, a classically-trained musician, is mastermind of a collective of acid jazz revivalists, “The Fez Collective,” based in the Italian town of Bari, and the Idizioni-Ishatr / Schema label, their record label for promoting their distinctly Italian approach to acid jazz.

Conte’s first album was Jet Sounds of 2000. The single “Bossa Per Due” gained international recognition and was an underground hit. It was used almost immediately for a prime-time commercial for Acura automobiles. The album was licensed for American distribution by Thievery Corporation’s Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL) label in the summer of 2001 as Bossa Per Due, and was a slightly reconfigured version of the Italian Jet Sounds album. This was followed by the Jet Sounds Revisited remix album in late 2002. Two years later, Blue Note’s French subsidiary released Conte’s next album Other Directions. In November 2008, Conte released his latest album, Rituals. In November of 2009, Nicola released “The Modern Sound of Nicola Conte”, versions in jazz-dub, on Schema records. Unlike his 2002 remix album which featured artists largely reworking his songs, this two disc set had Nicola releasing original titles and featured some of his jazz styled remixes of other people’s works.

Conte also produced albums by other artists such as Rosalia De Souza and Paolo Achenza Trio.
