Volume 1

This compilation brings together some of the finest producers currently working in the field of forward thinking beat-crafting, such as Flying Lotus/Samiyam (here billed as Flyamsam), Aardvarck and Steve Spacek (Black Pocket) as well as less established names. It’s rare that you come across compilations with such a unified sound as this. From its very beginnings, the collection establishes a unique brand of J-Dilla-inspired beat production and soulful instrumentation. J Todd’s ‘The Night’ encapsulates this perfectly, it’s roughly trimmed samples making for an entirely humanised take on easy going electronic music. Further into the compilation, Tom Trago’s combination of drifting synth pads and plunging low-end rhythms proves to be a winning formula. Similarly, Hearin’ Aid’s ‘Figz’ comes with jazzy grooves toughened up by a rasping bassline and a brilliantly dirty snare sound. Finally, co-curator Jay Scarlett rounds off the compilation with one of its finest tracks, the Dr Dre-indebted ‘Love Music’. A meticulously compiled body of work this, which succeeds in setting established names and newbie producers next to each other without lapses in quality control.

Volume 2

Volume 2 continues where the first left off. Exclusive beats from forward thinking producers the world over. Exciting and contrasting instrumentals from known producers such as Danny Breaks (Alphabet Zoo / Droppin’ Science), Dorian Concept (Kindred Spirits), Dimlite (All City), Ras G (Poobah) & Samiyam (Brain Feeder), Exile (Sound In Color), Fulgeance (Musique Large) + sick sounds from new kids Nosaj Thing (Alpha pup) Monopoly, Dizz1, Low Limit & Tiago, Devon and and and and and…Compiled by ‘beat connoisseurs’ Cinnaman & Jay Scarlett, the compilation touches on many different angles of ‘this music’. The Viennese producer and DJ trio – DJ Buzz, The Bionic Kid & DJ Zuzee – expanded the borders of hip-hop and dared to make trips to new musical territories without losing their orientation and spontaneity in their style of production. Live elements and sample-related production have always been a major part and a dash of turntablism habit has always given their projects its very own special flavour.

Arts the Beatdoctor (born in 1983) started producing for emcees some years ago, only to decide he liked most of the tracks better without vocals. So he continued to develop his mostly instrumental style, and his warm sound and diverse yet ever dreamy style have since then gained in reputation. After doing several little projects (The QuadraphoniQuartet) and taking the battle honors that STW didn’t claim, he released his half-instrumental EP “Fragments” on spring 2006, and also released his first solo-album.

Slow rolling moody soul sounds from Miles Bonny – a mix of relaxed beatcraft that’s rich in hypnotic atmosphere! Beats, bass and keys flavor the sound, with Miles’ vocals laid down as part of the overall atmosphere as much as the driving force of the tunes, and makes for an interesting blend of danceable keys & synth soul to more of a headphones head nodding experience. Good music is felt not heard. Gramatik apparently understood that at an age of 3 according to his mother as she used to catch him glued to the radio in his older sister’s room whenever there was an old funk or rhythm & blues joint on, tapping his leg on the floor along with the beat. The Clonious – Between The Dots
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2009, Electronic, Hip Hop

Heavyweight beat generation cosmic hip hop n’jazz featuring Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow, Muhsinah, Dorian Concept and many more. Somewhere between the past and the distant future, sparked by dusty old jazz records and beat generation hip hop, at the audio cross-roads of Detroit and Vienna, are the sound stories that have been steeping in the head of 23 year old beat navigator Paul Movahedi, also known as The Clonious. His outerworldly, astral jazz riffs burst out between booming beats and shoe-gazer future-funk to give the pulse of his electronic sounds a unique organic edge.

14KT – Nowalataz
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Hip Hop, Instrumental

Here it is… a project I unofficially had done since 2006. It started when James Yancey a.k.a. J Dilla passed that February. To cope with the death of my favorite producer, who I liked to call my unofficial “musical mentor,” I started making ‘donuts’ …uncontrollably. I never planned to release any of the material out of respect for Dilla & his craft. I’ve shared some of the music with others, in which they would repeatedly ask me to hear it, so I decided to put a little something together and make it official. JUST FOR YA’LL.
This is a collection of beats created about 3 years ago. Some ‘donuts’ style, some just around that era of 14KT beats. “Now & Laters” were always a favorite candy of mine. I used to go to Mindell’s Pharmacy in Ypsilanti back in the day and buy ALL of them. Sadly, I even stole change from my grandma’s (RIP) purse for them. They are addictive, yet fun to eat… something I found mutual when making music at the time. Ironically, I fell back in love with “Nowalataz” around this era (ask my homey Sarah “Merk Merk,” haha). Enjoy.

Numaads – Now EP
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Hip Hop

Numaads sounds different, looks different and thinks different.
Esperanzah is like a siren calling the listeners to her as she floats on the ocean of sound, created by her long time friend and musical partner SENSE (of The Q4 and Shahmen ). Her smooth earthy rap voice and angelic singing are carried beautifully by the strong drums and atmospheric vibes, and speaks to us of realignment with nature, with our roots and with ourselves.
SENSE skilfully combines original use of sampling, interweaved with organic instrumentation, to sculpt a sound that carries an almost mystical atmosphere. He is a craftsman who has been perfecting his art for many years and is now coming forth in to the light.
The record features four original songs and two remixes of the title song Now, by renowned producers Robot Koch and J Rawls .

Nicolay Albums!
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, Discography, Electronic, Hip Hop
Born and raised in the Netherlands, classically trained multi-instrumentalist and producer Nicolay played in a number of hip-hop and R&B bands around his homeland, but it wasn’t until 2000 that he decided to start producing his own beats. In 2002 Little Brother MC Phonte Coleman stumbled across one of them on /Okayplayer’s message board and asked if he could put his rhymes over it, and soon a friendship and a musical relationship was born. This transatlantic collaboration, which they called the Foreign Exchange, led to an album, Connected, in 2004, after which Nicolay continued producing tracks for Little Brother and Cesar Comanche, releasing City Lights, Vol. 1.5, first only online and then through BBE Records in 2005. The Dutch Masters, Vol. 1, which featured Nicolay DJing, came out that same year, followed by Here in 2006. In 2008 the producer teamed up with Houston rapper Kay (whom he had also met through message boards and had put on a track on Here) and issued the album Time:Line. The second Foreign Exchange album “Leave It All Behind” was released in October 2008. In 2009 time for the second installment in Nicolay’s City Lights, “Volume 2 Shibuya”.

Quetzal – Vision
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2009, Hip Hop, Instrumental

It would be fair to call Quetzal a typical vinyl junkie; born and raised on the sounds of classic soul and jazz, by the early 90′s he had discovered a love of hip hop culture, through the New York scene. It was this music and a fascination with processes used to create it, which gave Quetzal the drive to become a producer. Sample based music and crate digging were the flavour, and by 2003 producing had become the focus of his career. ‘Vision’ follows on from the hugely popular Onra & Quetzal joint drop ‘…Present Tribute’. Onra’s follow up to this was the massive ‘Chinoiseries’ album, merging instrumental hip hop and obscure Vietnamese pop samples (leading to one track being lifted and reinterpreted for the Coka-Cola Beijing Olympics ad campaign!) Now it is Quetzal’s turn to blow up, with his own long player ‘Vision’. ‘Vision’ explores a world of smooth grooves combined with more rootsy musical elements; 70′s Latin, Caribbean and Jamaican styles are clearly present, all seamlessly melded with more hip-hop and soul flavours. This is a nomadic sound – Quetzal is clearly a well travelled individual, and listening to ‘Vision’ feels like a journey through several diverse places. This is one for the beat journeymen and fans of Dusted Soul grooves and Tru Thoughts alike. ‘Vision’ also features guest vocals from Marie M, The Outabodies and Dye. While working on “Vison”, his forthcoming new album just started in 2007,Quetzal produced three tracks featured in the Boulangerie compilation, by the Fine Equipe. He is currently also working with many other diverse artists such as Dye, Leck Lips, Marie M, Nicolas Coyez, The Outabodies, Doods Mc, Enz, Mil, Fave . Check!

Paul White – Paul White & The Purple Brain
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Downtempo, Electronic, Hip Hop

This album is based entirely around the music of ST Mikael, an incredible Swedish psych-rock artist who has been recording weird and wonderful records since the 1990s. Mikael’s music is heavy on Eastern influences and otherworldly concerns, and ranges from searing electric guitar-led dirges to dreamlike ballads to ghostly atmospheric experiments. Sometimes all within the same song. Paul White has reimagined and remoulded and Mikael’s sounds, and added his own, to make an intriguing and mesmerising album that sounds unlike anyone else but him. It’s recognisably hip hop (just check ‘Marshen Signals’) but it’s psychedelic, spontaneous and free in a way that seems far from most definitions of the genre today. A fascinating album from a fascinating producer.

John Robinson & Lewis Parker – International Summers
Posted by dOk | Filed under 2010, Hip Hop

It is often difficult to describe in words the emotion that is involved in creative ventures. This is one of those situations. When we decided to record the new album “International Summers” we wondered how we could possibly capture the deep and warm sensation that lies within the heart and souls of the people world round. John Robinson and Lewis Parker both hold impressive discographies the easily boast a decade plus of gems delivered to the masses wrapped in passion, love and integrity. John is the perfect example of still waters run deep, his much reserved and calm façade belies the excitement and the imagination that explodes when he literally loses himself in the rhymes and let thoughts channel from a higher place. Lewis is a master craftsman, and his craft is one of hypnotism, seduction and satisfaction all accomplished via his bewitching SP 1200 and other Classic vintage analog machinery, which gives birth right to his Golden Sound. JR and LP are the oracles of that warmth the has been missing in the world of music and leaving so many cold and lonely searching for that same substance that forced them to fall in Love with the music in the first place! International Summers marks the continuing journey that can’t be limited to a certain place nor season, so fasten your seatbelts yall! Let’s RIDE! The Bonus Cassette includes the whole album as Instrumental Version!
