Urbs & Cutex are long time Hip Hop DJs and producers out of Vienna, and when they say HipHop they mean the deep and funky way it should be. Well known for various releases on Uptight Records, they know offer us this great puristic record of 10 moving tracks, all arranged around jazzy and soulful loops. “Breks Of Dawn” doesn’t sound modern, you could say it sounds oldschool, but at the end it just sounds timeless!

Carlos Niño and Fabian Ammon have long been fulcrums of LA Black music, perfectly poised between the jazz crowd centered around Dwight Trible and classic group’s like the Army of Healers and Build An Ark, the underground hip hop scene which grew from the Good Life and Project Blowed collectives and the heavy soul-beat sound of the likes of Sa Ra and Madlib. “With Voices” is the album that Ammoncontact have been waiting to make – the point where the duo’s own loping, deep production style could be melded, as the title has it, with the voices around them. The results are scinitillating, a hip hop album bursting with spirituality and positivity and a unique ambience.

Kankick is a hip-hop producer from Oxnard, CA. The Kankick sound is dusty, crunchy and blunted, and just the right tempo to get the proper head nod going. He started out in the science of hip-hop beat making in 1988, as a freshman in high school when he hooked up with Madlib who was a sophomore at the time. Kankick later joined the Lootpack and became the 4th member. He has now split from them though and formed the Funk Farm, which also included DJ Babu (Dilated Peoples-Beat Junkies). For more info check: myspace.com/kanzuluxperience.
Live From The MPC 60 serves as a good starting point for fans of Ayatollah’s soulful production who haven’t explored his instrumental output. With 66 tracks totaling over 150 minutes of music, Live is the definitive Ayatollah instrumental collection, a dream come true for beat junkies. While most producers have swtiched to a computer-based setup, Tollah continues to churn out head-nodding concoctions on his vintage Akai MPC 60, saving each beat on an old-school floppy disc. Though he’s been perfecting his craft for over 15 years, Tollah doesn’t feel like his work is done. “I want to give more to the world,” he explains. “I’ve been sitting on a lot of material.
