Sam Baker, alias Samiyam, is an instrumental Hip-Hop producer from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is best known for his work with experimental producer, Flying Lotus, and his 8-bit Video Game inspired Hip-Hop beats. Ann Arbor’s latest prodigal son and lover of sprinkles on doughnuts, takes the legacy of all Detroit’s talented musical sons and daughters and makes Hip Hop beats filled with snippets of Soul, Funk, 70’s Italian horror flick soundtracks, Nintendo bonus level music, and 90’s Hip Hop. Somehow, with this much content, the beats still manage to sound gloriously minimal and disjointed. Fans like Benji B, Andrew Meza and XLR8R have been eagerly snapping up his tracks, as Sam freeze frames Electro energy and spits it back out as twisted future Jazz. Dabrye is a fan, Daedelus describes him as “a thrilling sound to break the sameness,” and Flying Lotus is his brother in arms (they collaborate on the project FLYamSAM).

Miami hip-hop ensemble ArtOfficial have linked up with DJBooth.net, RefinedHype, Illroots and Kevin Nottingham to drop a free project entitled The Payback.
The 12-track street album finds emcees Newsense and Logics performing over the live backing of bandmates Danny Perez, Manny Patino, Ralf Valencia and Keith Cooper, who recreate classic instrumentals by everyone from rock legend Jimi Hendrix (“Voodoo”) to jazz trio Medeski, Martin & Wood (title track “The Payback”).
Making guest appearances throughout the project are ¡Mayday!‘s Wrekonize, QuESt, K. Sparks, Swamburger from Solillaquists of Sound, LLamabeats, Jesse Jackson and Asuka Barden.

“The Gin Diaries” are about beats, love and Tanqueray. Suff Daddy is a gentleman who knows about the good life: Jamaican Kush, rare soul records and beautiful women make his day. And Suff Deezy ain’t no greedy man. On his new record, he shares his music with friends like Miles Bonny, Fleur Earth, Mariama, Mar and Jim Dunloop. We call “The Gin Diaries” a beat novel, consisting of 13 musical short stories. Some have lyrics and some have not but they are all snaphots of the life of Suff Daddy. “Özdemir” speaks about Suff’s penchant for Turkish breaks, “Vienna” reflects on a recent trip to Vienna and “Konnopke” is giving props to the best currywurst in Berlin. Whereas the songs with Miles, Fleur, Mariama and Mar deal with love, despair and everything in between.

Jun Seba (February 19, 1974 – February 26, 2010) was a Japanese hip-hop producer and DJ who recorded under the name Nujabes (Noo-Jah-Bess). His alias was simply his name “sebajun” spelled backwards. Nujabes was also owner of the Shibuya record stores, T Records and Guinness Records and founder of the independent label Hydeout Productions.
In addition to Japanese artists like Uyama Hiroto, Shing02 and Minmi, Nujabes collaborated with underground American hip-hop acts CYNE, Cise Starr (as a solo apart from the hiphop collective CYNE), Apani B, Five Deez, Substantial, CL Smooth, Terry Callier, as well as British rapper Funky DL. He was also a member of the production duo Urbanforest, an experimental collaboration with Nao T.
Nujabes was one of the most prolific contributors to the background music and soundtracks of Samurai Champloo, an anime which blends a feudal Japan setting with modern anachronisms, especially in regards to hip hop culture.
On February 26, 2010, Jun Seba was involved in a traffic accident upon exiting the Shuto Expressway late at night. He died at a hospital in Shibuya Ward after failed efforts to revive him. He was 36 years old. There was a private burial with only family in attendance. Hydeout Productions has stated that Nujabes has left behind tracks, which they plan to release in the near future.

Le n?ko – Up to number 5 in the All City Beat series now, this 45 on 33 comes from French beat maker Le n?ko (Le neko). Unfamilar to most, no doubt, but trust us on this one! He says: “My name is le N?KO, i do the beats my mind and fingers let me do.” We say: A double A with two Slices of bumping broken French fonk “Akedam” and “Apprendre” from the Lyon based producer who has been making some noise online over the last couple of years via myspace and ampsoul radio in particular. He has recently produced a track for Maspyke (ABB) MC Hanif Jamyls summer release “Krushed Grapes” but this is his first solo vinyl release.

Onra – #7 of 7 from French beatmaker Onra is a double sided dose of French bruk hip hop soul with a nod to the East. The young Parisian is already 2 LP’s deep – his incredible 2007 Chinoiseries LP is paid homage to Far Eastern pop music with beats plucked from Vietnamese records picked up on holidays. Alongside Quetzal he has released two “Tribute” EPs which layered soul samples with a hip hop backbone. As if that’s not enough he has just released his second solo LP – “1.0.8” which again looks across the globe for its inspiration, made up of Indian samples so it’s a delight for us to have him round off the year and the series with the lush “My Comet” and flip side “Shhhhhhh”.

Dimlite – #8 of 7 is the last 45 in the beat series, a bonus to coincide with a limited CD compilation of all 7 45s of the series. This 45 comes from Swiss beatmaker, Sonar Kollectiv artist and serial re-mixer Dimlite. Crossing between sick 80s style new wave Zappaesque dirt into dreamy futuristic soul tinged indie-smurf folk. 5 minutes of madness layered with vocals, scratches and a hip hop beat it comes on shiny yellow vinyl with an instrumental/dub on the flip and is an appropriately eccentric end to the series.

DJ Cam (born Laurent Daumail in 1973) is a French DJ. His tunes are almost entirely a hybrid of both hip-hop and jazz music, and is presented in an abstract manner. Parisian hip-hop devotee Laurent Daumail is one of a few but growing number of French artists updating hip-hop for the chill-out crowd, drawing on the beats’n'samples groundwork of producers such as Rakim, DJ Premier, and Prince Paul and combining it with broad, impressionistic strokes of dub, jazz, and soundtrack-y ambience. Like countrymen the Mighty Bop and la Funk Mob, Cam is stylistically closest to Mo’Wax artists such as DJ Shadow and DJ Krush; minimalist, downbeat instrumental hip-hop built from obscure samples and stomp-box turntable accompaniment, bent and twisted into new, artfully arranged compositions.

It’s lovely, spacey and soulful sounding throughout — with Mar on vocals and Full Crate handling the productions. The first time I heard Robert Glasper’s music was in the summer of 2007. I was hanging out with the homie phinydee in the jazz record shop he used to work at, in Paris. We were trying to finish Changes Of Atmosphere at the time, so quite often I would stop by the shop so we could discuss featurings, label deals, yadda yadda.. So anyway, Phinydee had In My Element playing in the background, and of course Dillalude caught my ear… “hold on, what is this ?!” But shortly we got back into babbling about distribution, mastering, budget and all that, so I didn’t get to give the album a proper listening. Until october 2009. A that time, Robert’s latest, Doubled Booked, was on heavy rotation at the crib, and after I twat (twitted ?) about it, twitters @FROactiv and @fwmj advised me to get my hands on In My Element. A couple weeks later I found a copy in Archambault in MTL, so I copped it, went home and played it and… DAYMN! This album is 1) very dope 2) absolutely full of samples. Some of the interludes are basically hip-hop beats already… So.. I was like, I can’t sample the whole album and get away with it, can I ? Can I ??? I felt guilty already, so I figured I might as well do it, but call it a remix album or something.. And I started making these beats. So there you go now, The Robert Glasper Beattape is up for free download. If you like it, please support good music by copping In My Element, you’ll like it too. Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician (born on August 8th, 1969 as John Marshall) is an American hip hop producer from Cincinnati, Ohio and one of the four members of Five Deez, alongside Pase Rock, Sonic, and Kyle David. He is also credited with some of the music in the anime series Samurai Champloo. Unorthodox producer/rapper Fat Jon is not only the beat-maker for the underground hip-hop collective Five Deez but a member of the 3582 crew and a solo artist with a string of albums that flirt with electronica, downtempo, and dub sounds. Sometimes credited as Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician, Jon started out as a rapper in his native Cincinnati. There weren’t many beat-makers on the local scene, so Jon learned how to make his own, working with a set of analog equipment that fit perfectly with his old school-loving, throwback style.
