This collaborative project started as a conversation between two like-minded individuals, Question and Freddie Joachim. They call it, “STUDY GUIDE: An instrumental look at scholastic development.” The concept was simple; both artists possessed a distinct sound with an emphasis on jazz. The end result is a compilation that walks you through one of the most progressive musical art form. Both artists have been spinning hip hop and jazz plus other genres since the 1990s. Freddie has produced music for many indie hip hop and soul artists worldwide. His first album, “In With Time”, was released 2008 in Japan, and featured Aloe Blacc, Blu, Munshine, Choice 37, Lauren Santiago, Profile (The Upstarts/The Sound Providers), Surreal, Othello, Son of Ran and more. Question started making beats with an ASR-10. He then moved on to the MPC and has stuck to it ever since. Question’s music is an interpretation of a timeless era, purely fueled by Jazz & Soul. Special US release limited to 100 copies.

Kan Kick – Beautiful Opus Of Love Deeper Than Flesh

Kankick is a hip-hop producer from Oxnard, CA. He was once a member of Lootpack, but has gone on to work with Declaime, Tha Alkaholiks, and DJ Babu, among others. His first album is entitled From Artz Unknown and was released in 2001. “Beautiful: Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh” continues Kankick’s tradition of low-key loops and fuzzed-out jazziness. “Thursdays at the Good Life” rocks a lounge piano and background bells, “Black Women Candle Wax” uses a little static to augment the simple synth melody, and a river of bubbling crowd noise percolates under the mellow loop that powers “Continued Togetherness.” Piano figures heavy on “Beautiful,” and some of Kankick’s best work throughout the disc’s 58 minutes is anchored on lilting, mid-range keywork (“NightTime Beauty,” “Serenade the Outdoor Visitors,” and what kind of sounds like an electric piano played in reverse on “OX Coming at Ya”). If you’re looking to get your party started, “Opus of Love Deeper Than Flesh” might not be quite the right vehicle. But once the party’s winding down, and you and your people are just settling in during the late night hours, it’s the perfect accompaniment for slowly nodding your head and drifting into a daze on the couch.

RJD2 – Inversions Of The Colossus

Following upon the success of “The Colossus”, RJD2 returns with “Inversions of the Colossus”, a companion piece of its own unique nature. The “instrumental” album is a time honored tradition in hip hop that RJD2 has taken advantage of whenever possible – without an instrumental version of “Magnificent City”, there would be no Mad Men theme! However, “Inversions” is a new twist on the idea: in essence, all 7 of the vocal songs on “The Colossus” appear here sans vocals. The remainder of the album is made up of 7 new songs – 14 tracks in all! Ranging from banging dancefloor funk to extreme psychedelia, it follows a similar “no format” approach as “The Colossus” did. Yet another solid collection of classic RJD2.

Here it is… a project I unofficially had done since 2006. It started when James Yancey a.k.a. J Dilla passed that February. To cope with the death of my favorite producer, who I liked to call my unofficial “musical mentor,” I started making ‘donuts’ …uncontrollably. I never planned to release any of the material out of respect for Dilla & his craft. I’ve shared some of the music with others, in which they would repeatedly ask me to hear it, so I decided to put a little something together and make it official. JUST FOR YA’LL.
This is a collection of beats created about 3 years ago. Some ‘donuts’ style, some just around that era of 14KT beats. “Now & Laters” were always a favorite candy of mine. I used to go to Mindell’s Pharmacy in Ypsilanti back in the day and buy ALL of them. Sadly, I even stole change from my grandma’s (RIP) purse for them. They are addictive, yet fun to eat… something I found mutual when making music at the time. Ironically, I fell back in love with “Nowalataz” around this era (ask my homey Sarah “Merk Merk,” haha). Enjoy.

Quetzal – Vision

It would be fair to call Quetzal a typical vinyl junkie; born and raised on the sounds of classic soul and jazz, by the early 90′s he had discovered a love of hip hop culture, through the New York scene. It was this music and a fascination with processes used to create it, which gave Quetzal the drive to become a producer. Sample based music and crate digging were the flavour, and by 2003 producing had become the focus of his career. ‘Vision’ follows on from the hugely popular Onra & Quetzal joint drop ‘…Present Tribute’. Onra’s follow up to this was the massive ‘Chinoiseries’ album, merging instrumental hip hop and obscure Vietnamese pop samples (leading to one track being lifted and reinterpreted for the Coka-Cola Beijing Olympics ad campaign!) Now it is Quetzal’s turn to blow up, with his own long player ‘Vision’. ‘Vision’ explores a world of smooth grooves combined with more rootsy musical elements; 70′s Latin, Caribbean and Jamaican styles are clearly present, all seamlessly melded with more hip-hop and soul flavours. This is a nomadic sound – Quetzal is clearly a well travelled individual, and listening to ‘Vision’ feels like a journey through several diverse places. This is one for the beat journeymen and fans of Dusted Soul grooves and Tru Thoughts alike. ‘Vision’ also features guest vocals from Marie M, The Outabodies and Dye. While working on “Vison”, his forthcoming new album just started in 2007,Quetzal produced three tracks featured in the Boulangerie compilation, by the Fine Equipe. He is currently also working with many other diverse artists such as Dye, Leck Lips, Marie M, Nicolas Coyez, The Outabodies, Doods Mc, Enz, Mil, Fave . Check!

The Hi-Hat Club is on a roll! After Dexter restructured the metaphysics of a jazzthing (Vol.3 / The Jazz Files), we proudly present Vol.4: “Chop Shop” by Brenk and Fid Mella from Vienna. The name says it all: the “Chop Shop” is one of the hardest and most intensely chopped records you have ever heard. Brenk Sinatra, the Austrian heayweight beatchampion (MC Eiht, Kamp, Miles Bonny, Guilty Simpson) is also introducing his protegee, the Italian-born beatmaker Fid Mella, with this volume.
About Brenk: Austria isn’t exactly the epicenter of the beatmaking world but things are changing fast with producers like Dorian Concept, DJ Buzz and The Clonius. And Branko Jordanovic aka Brenk. The Wien-Kaisermühlen homeboy is a mystical figure. A Westcoast rap fanatic and hardcore producer, Brenk is one of the most complete European beatmakers. Although you can’t pinpoint his sound you know immediately that it is him when you are hearing a Brenk production. Westcoast Gangsta-rap and grimey Detroit rap are as present in his music as sweet soul music from the 60ties + 70ties – all chopped to the max and iced out with analogue Korg lines. After releasing the slept on instro-masterpiece “Gumbo” on Supercity in 2008, Brenk has worked with Westcoast pioneer King Tee and has laced beats for an armada of Austrian MCs (Kamp, MAdoppelT, Skero, Kayo). Right now he is producing one half of the forthcoming new MC Eiht album on Year Round Records (Premo is doing the other half) and is working on S3 (Supa Soul S**t), a group he has formed with MPM singer Miles Bonny.
About Fid Mella: Fid Mella was born in Meran (Italy) where he has produced albums with Ghemon, Mistaman and Kiave. Seven years ago, Mella moved to Vienna where he hooked up with Brenk. Since than he has worked with Kev Brown, EdO G, Deph Joe, Gerard MC, Manuva and many more.

VeeBeeO aka Tim Lundblad was born in the city of Stockholm in 1981. Growing up with musicians as parents he was constantly surrounded by all kinds of music, something that came to be the foundation for the special blend he now produces, as well as his love for good music of all genres. He began playing drums at the age of 8 and a few years later he also took interest in keyboard, bass, guitar, making beats and the art of recording, with time turning him into the multiskilled muscian/producer/songwriter he is today. Veebeo appears on the already highly acclaimed Beat Dimensions project (Rush Hour) and now comes his debut 12” EP “Instrumentality”. A 6 track EP with headnodding beats for ya eardrums, CHECK!
