Hank Mobley – Roll Call

null

During his tenure with Miles Davis, Hank Mobley made four Blue Note albums with band mates Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers, the most celebrated being Soul Station with Art Blakey on drums. For Roll Call, recorded nine months later, Mobley assembled the same magnificent rhythm section and added Freddie Hubbard on trumpet. The result rivals its more well known predecessor in swing, soul and incredible solos. The gospely “A Baptist Beat,” heard here in two takes, has become a favorite among club DJs and acid jazz fans.

Dorothy Ashby – In a Minor Groove

null

On In A Minor Groove, Ashby she swings with an other-wordly quality that’s simply amazing, quite exotic, and very much in the camp of players like Yusef Lateef or Les Jazz Modes, who were trying similar experiments in jazz. This session features Dorothy in a quartet with the flute of Frank Wess, the bass of Herman Wright, and the drums of Roy Haynes, whose warm lyrical touches provide the perfect melodicism for the group.

Larry Willis – Inner Crisis

null

One of the few funky albums ever cut as a leader by Larry Willis  a super-hip keyboard player who’s best known for his work with Jackie McLean and Hugh Masekela, but who sounds even better as a leader! This album’s a gem all the way through  with a free-thinking soulful sound that’s head and shoulders above the rest of the work on Groove Merchant at the time. Players include Harold Vick, Roland Prince, and Eddie Gomez and the overall groove is an incredible array of soulful rhythms, played by Larry on electric piano, in a mode that makes the record feel like a lost gem from Strata East or Black Jazz.

John Patton – Along Came John

null

John Patton, Grant Green and Ben Dixon were introduced to Blue Note by Lou Donaldson and quickly became the quintessential rhythm section for Blue Note’s funkier session. They came together for this, John Patton’s first album, with two of the label’s tenor saxophonists Fred Jackson and Harold Vick. The double tenors and organ trio make an unbeatable combination for some soulful, swinging music. The title tune and “The Silver Meter” were radio hits that remain among the most popular of Patton’s recorded performances.

Billy Cobham – A Funky Thide Of Sings

null

After a string of successful solo efforts, Billy Cobham began to slip into mediocrity beginning with this recording, originally released in 1975. While elements of funk were always a part of his band’s sound, it was now the primary focus. “Panhandler” stands out as the session’s most memorable composition, while Milcho Leviev contributes nicely on “Moody Modes.” Cobham fans will want to seek this out for the extended drum solo “A Funky Kind of Thing,” which stands as one of the most original drum solos he ever recorded.

Horace Silver – Blowin’ The Blues Away

null

Recorded in 1959, this is an early chronicle of one of the finest bands of the hard-bop genre, pianist Silver’s classic quintet with trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, bassist Gene Taylor, and drummer Louis Hayes. The group already epitomized Silver’s own virtues of precision and hard swing, with each soloist committed to direct and concise statements, at all times both emotionally and musically focused. There’s effective contrast, too, between Mitchell’s subtle turn of phrase and Cook’s raw intensity, each filling in Silver’s vision of a music that combined the complexity of bop and the immediacy of blues and gospel. This session contains the original recordings of two Silver standards, the serene “Peace” and the joyously funky “Sister Sadie,” but the collective impact of the band is just as enduring. The group was so musically close-knit that when Silver disbanded five years later, the rest continued as the Blue Mitchell Quintet, with a young Chick Corea on piano.

Augusto Martelli – Black Sounds From White People

null

If you can forgive the title of this one, you’ll find it to be a very groovy record! The album’s a killer batch of funky instrumentals (“black sound”) recorded in Italy in 1972 by Augusto Martelli (“white people”) and it’s got the groove and swing of some of the best Italian soundtracks from the time, no surprise, as Martelli had his hand in a few from that era! The package is a nice one  with a thick booklet, notes in Japanese, but some good images of Martelli and album covers  and the music is really great, with some excellent sax and flute work that takes the tracks into a jazzier mode than usual for this sort of thing!

Lou Donaldson – Here ‘Tis

null

Here ‘Tis is in the front rank of Lou Donaldson records, an exceptionally funky soul-jazz session that finds the saxophonist swinging harder than usual. As he moves from hard bop to soul-jazz, Donaldson reveals a bluesy streak to his playing while keeping the vigorous attack that defined his best bop. Donaldson’s playing is among his finest in the soul-jazz vein, but what makes Here ‘Tis such an enjoyable session is his interaction with his supporting trio of guitarist Grant Green, organist Baby Face Willette, and drummer Dave Bailey. As support, all three know how to keep a groove gritty and flexible, following Lou’s lead and working a swinging beat that keeps flowing, never growing static. Green and Willette also have their time in the spotlight, and both musicians are frequently stunning. Green’s single-note leads are clean and inventive; Willette is rhythmic and forceful, but also capable of soulful, mellow leads on the slow blues. Their talent, combined with Donaldson at a peak, results in a terrific record.

Aldo Romano – Just Jazz

null

Aldo Romano has long proven himself an innovative leader and the 2007 sessions that make up Just Jazz are no exception. Romano is not one to take a lot of solos himself, preferring to showcase his bandmates while adding color behind them. His pianoless quartet consists of clarinetist Mauro Negri, who played on Romano’s earlier Dreyfus CD État de Fait, old friend Henri Texier on bass, and the much younger Géraldine Laurent, a gifted French saxophonist whose star is rising. Most of the release focuses on Romano’s captivating originals, highlighted by the emotional “Cité-Soleil” (French for “Sun City”), named for the wretched shanty town in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. “Township” is an infectious African-flavored chant, with Laurent’s vocal-like alto recalling Eric Dolphy, and Negri’s electronically altered clarinet adding seasoning. “Chick Webb,” named for the famous swing drummer, has a fun twist in that the bassist is the featured soloist. Romano’s love for Ornette Coleman’s work is well known, so it shouldn’t be surprising to hear the dissonance within the drummer’s “Libero!!” (“Free!!”).” His powerful interpretation of Fats Waller’s maudlin “Black and Blue” and lighthearted take of Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag” round out this diverse, rewarding CD.

Rusty Bryant – Soul Liberation

Rusty leads a group that includes heavyweights like Charles Earland on organ, Virgil Jones on trumpet, Melvin Sparks on guitar, and Idris Muhammad on drums – all top-shelf players who make for a date as great as you might imagine – one that definitely liberates Rusty’s soul from older modes, and sets it free into new funky pastures! Oneness Of Juju – African Rhythms

null

A landmark of Afro-centric jazz in the 70s – and the first album by this famous underground collective! Oneness of Juju were a Washington DC-based group that grew out of the ashes of the Juju avant jazz ensemble – formed in the culturally rich African-American community of DC in the 70s, with spiritual and political aspirations that stretched far beyond the average funky combo. This first album is a masterful blend of percussion, jazz, and a slight bit of funk – alternating vocal tracks with harder-hitting jazz instrumentals, all held together under the leadership of sax player Plunky Nakabinde. The album’s one of the greatest independent soul jazz albums of the 70s – and it’s filled with great tracks, such as the breakbeat classic “African Rhythms” and “Liberation Dues”. Gianni Gebbia Trio – Outland

null

Saxophonist and composer Gianni Gebbia is deeply influenced by Ornette Coleman and the late Jim Pepper. His trio with drummer Vittorio Villa and bassist Lelio Giannetto — and guest Massimo Simonine helping out on electronics and turntables and keyboards — delves deeply into the simple repetitive melodies Coleman is so famous for, and turns them into epics. This is a music based in the most basic elements of harmonic construction, where a melody can be created and deconstructed while it continues to play through the listener’s mind as the improvisation moves over it. It is never totally absent in the ensemble’s playing, such as in the amazing “Verso Kamarina,” with either Gebbia or Villa carrying the essence of that melody through a blowing fest that is adorned with all manner of electronic trickery by Simonine. Elsewhere, on “Immer Gerardeaus,” the lyric sensibility seems absent amid the wooly free jazz improvising, but, nonetheless, it is there, somewhere between horn and bass, spitting itself out in bits and pieces like jagged shards of pretty glass. The title track (dedicated to cartoonist Berke Breathed) is a shambolic exploration of a high register line that is adorned by percussion and a droning bassline. Here, too, the melody is in the line itself that seems to come from a non-Western source. Finally, Gebbia’s true genius comes to play in “Shamal,” a monolithic work that crosses jazz boundaries into North African street music, Middle Eastern chant, and vanguard lyricism á la Don Cherry’s MU albums. The interplay between the sampled voices and Gebbia’s alto is unsettling it’s so close, and the droning rhythms of Villa and Giannetto that are guided through the knots by Simonine’s electric piano are truly hypnotic. There is no resolution in this piece as it moves through you rather than around you; it encapsulates everything within itself and then just buries it whole. This is in its own way a very confrontational, yet very listenable, work of Italian vanguard jazz. Amazing.
