The Incredible Jimmy Smith – Crazy! Baby

null

Unlike most of the Jimmy Smith recordings from the era, this CD reissue (which adds “If I Should Lose You” and “When Lights Are Low” to the original LP program) features organist Jimmy Smith’s regular group (rather than an all-star band). With guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey completing the trio, Smith is heard in peak form on swinging and soulful versions of such tunes as “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” “Makin’ Whoopee,” “Sonnymoon for Two,” and “Mack the Knife.” Despite claims and some strong challenges by others, there has never been a jazz organist on the level of Jimmy Smith.

Hank Mobley – The Turnaround

null

Hank Mobley’s later Blue Note sessions took on a much harder edge than his earlier efforts. The saxophonist’s round tone became funkier as he delved deeper into the popular soul-jazz style that had been introduced with Lee Morgan’s hit “The Sidewinder.” The Turnaround is one of Mobley’s best releases of this period, offering many unforgettable solo moments as well as some intense small group workouts.

Duke Pearson – The Right Touch

null

Duke Pearson rises to the challenge of writing for an all-star octet (with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, trombonist Garnett Brown, altoist James Spaulding, Jerry Dodgion on alto and flute, Stanley Turrentine on tenor, bassist Gene Taylor, drummer Grady Tate, and the leader/pianist), contributing colorful frameworks and consistently challenging compositions. The set is full of diverse melodies (the CD reissue has a previously unissued take of “Los Malos Hombres”) played by a variety of distinctive soloists; many of these songs deserve to be revived. This is one of the finest recordings of Duke Pearson’s career.

Personnel: Duke Pearson (piano); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Garnett Brown (trombone); Jerry Dodgion (alto saxophone, flute); James Spaulding (alto saxophone); Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Gene Taylor (bass); Grady Tate (drums).

Sonny Clark – Cool Struttin’

null

Recorded in 1958, this legendary date with the still-undersung Sonny Clark in the leader’s chair also featured a young Jackie McLean on alto (playing with a smoother tone than he had before or ever did again), trumpeter Art Farmer, and the legendary rhythm section of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, both from the Miles Davis band. The set begins with one of the preeminent “swinging medium blues” pieces in jazz history: the title track with its leveraged fours and eights shoved smoothly up against the walking bass of Chambers and the backbeat shuffle of Jones. Clark’s solo, with its grouped fifths and sevenths, is a wonder of both understatement and groove, while Chambers’ arco solo turns the blues in on itself. While there isn’t a weak note on this record, there are some other tracks that stand out, most notably Miles’ “Sippin’ at Bells,” with its loping Latin rhythm. When McLean takes his solo against a handful of Clark’s shaded minor chords, he sounds as if he may blow it — he comes out a little quick — but he recovers nicely and reaches for a handful of Broadway show tunes to counter the minor mood of the piece. He shifts to both Ben Webster and Lester Young before moving through Bird, and finally to McLean himself, riding the margin of the changes to slip just outside enough to add some depth in the middle register. The LP closes with Henderson and Vallée’s “Deep Night,” the only number in the batch not rooted in the blues. It’s a classic hard bop jamming tune and features wonderful solos by Farmer, who plays weird flatted notes all over the horn against the changes, and McLean, who thinks he’s playing a kind of snake charmer blues in swing tune. This set deserves its reputation for its soul appeal alone.

Personnel: Sonny Clark (piano); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Art Farmer (trumpet); Paul Chambers (acoustic bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Milt Jackson – Bags’ Opus

null

Vibraphonist Milt Jackson welcomes the two future co-leaders of The Jazztet (trumpeter Art Farmer and tenor-saxophonist Benny Golson) along with a fine rhythm section (pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Connie Kay) on this CD reissue. The repertoire (which includes early versions of Golson’s “Whisper Not” and “I Remember Clifford” in addition to two standards, a Milt Jackson blues and John Lewis’s “Afternoon in Paris”) is very much in The Jazztet hard bop vein and Jackson fits in very well with the two lyrical horn soloists. A successful outing by some of the greats.

Piero Umiliani – La Ragazza Dalla Pelle di Luna

null

This is the soundtrack for a 1970 Italian film that played out the romantically charged story of a couple coming apart against a sultry tropical island locale. Fittingly, composer Piero Umiliani’s score mixes jazzy romanticism with strong tropical rhythms to create a score that is both lush and exotic. It is built on one main theme, “Pelle Di Luna,” a hypnotic tune that is seductive and bittersweet all at once. This theme is repeated through the majority of the cues. This could have resulted in a dull score, but Umiliani makes it work because he consistently takes the theme in new and interesting musical directions through imaginative arrangements; the many forms it takes on include an acoustic guitar theme with chorus, a solo organ piece, a mellow instrumental built on steel guitar, and a full orchestral version that mixes layers of the vocal chorus over swirling strings.

Sam Rivers – The Complete Blue Note Sam Rivers Sessions

null

From the time of his first Blue Note recording in 1964 to his final session for the label in 1967, Sam Rivers made stunning progress as an avant-garde innovator. Starting with an inside/outside hard bop foundation, Rivers quickly took his music as far out as he could while maintaining a recognizable structure; his work fearlessly explored wildly dissonant harmonies and atonality, dense group interaction, cerebral rumination, and passionately intense, free-leaning solos. The Complete Blue Note Sam Rivers Sessions traces that development chronologically (and flawlessly) over the course of three discs, including the entirety of his four albums as a leader: the relatively straightforward Fuschia Swing Song [sic], the avant-bop masterpiece Contours, the radical standards album A New Conception, and the galvanizing, brilliant avant-garde classic Dimensions and Extensions (which also comprised Rivers’ half of the split double-LP Involution with Andrew Hill). Five alternate takes are also added to the program, including three of “Downstairs Blues Upstairs.” What amazes just as much as Rivers’ imaginative originality is how consistently rewarding all three discs are. Rivers may not be quite as much a household name as some of his equally forward-thinking peers, but any jazz fan remotely interested in the avant-garde should know that this set constitutes some of the finest avant-garde jazz Blue Note ever released.

Ambrose Akinmusire – When The Heart Emerges Glistening

Co-produced by Akinmusire and his label mate and mentor Jason Moran, the album’s 12 songs (10 of which were composed by Akinmusire) feature the 28-year-old trumpeter’s young quintet (tenor saxophonist Walter Smith III, pianist Gerald Clayton, bassist Harish Raghavan, and drummer Justin Brown), a close-knit group of longtime friends and frequent collaborators that breathes a remarkable collective identity. The New York Times wrote that the quintet “seems destined for much wider recognition,” and described their unique sound as “limber, straight-ahead jazz with mystery and pop instincts that gets around most of the old, pervasive mainstream influences, both of trumpet playing and bandleading.”

Joe Henderson – Power To The People

null

This album has quite a few classic moments. At that point in time, tenor saxophonist Henderson was a sideman with Herbie Hancock’s Sextet, so Hancock was happy to perform as a sideman, doubling on piano and electric piano, with the all-star group, which also includes trumpeter Mike Lawrence, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Highlights are many and include the original version of “Black Narcissus,” “Isotope,” a lyrical rendition of “Lazy Afternoon,” and the free-form “Foresight and Afterthought.”

Duke Pearson – Sweet Honey Bee

Pianist/composer Duke Pearson leads an all-star group on this run-through of seven of his compositions. The musicians (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, altoist James Spaulding, Joe Henderson on tenor, bassist Ron Carter, drummer Mickey Roker, and the pianist/leader) are actually more impressive than many of the compositions, although the swinging minor-toned “Big Bertha” deserved to become a standard. The frameworks are quite intelligent (and everyone doesn’t solo on each selection), and the improvisations are concise and clearly related to each tune’s melody and mood.

Charlie Parker – Complete Savoy & Dial Sessions

null

In his brief career, Charlie Parker transformed jazz, spontaneously extending the harmonic and rhythmic range of the music in his fluent improvisations. Only Louis Armstrong and John Coltrane have had as dramatic an influence on other musicians. Broadly considered as one of the greatest saxophonists of all time, he was crucial in the development of the bebop movement. Many of his compositions have become standards including “Billie’s Bounce”, “Ornithology” and “Confirmation”. Two of his albums, Jazz at Massey Hall and Charlie Parker with Strings, have received the Grammy Hall of Fame award.

His playing was highly acclaimed during his lifetime although his many performances were, from time to time, hampered by his growing addictions – primarily to alcohol and heroin. His prodigious output of albums belies that fact that he died aged only 34, from pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer.

John Coltrane – The Complete Africa/Brass Sessions

null

In 1961 John Coltrane’s explorations of different modes and rhythms led to several powerful works that invoked other cultures, like “Olé,” “India,” and “Brazilia.” While those pieces were all recorded with expanded versions of his quartet, “Africa” was a unique opportunity, with Eric Dolphy’s arrangements for up to 13 brass and reed instruments providing a setting of volcanic energy for Coltrane’s majestic, declamatory tenor and the surging drumming of Elvin Jones. The orchestrations, as well as the solos, vary on the two sessions heard here, and there are also thoughtful adaptations of traditional material like “Greensleeves,” a lilting feature for Coltrane’s soprano saxophone that recalls the earlier treatment of “My Favorite Things,” and “Song of the Underground Railroad.” The two-CD complete collection expands on the original release with alternate takes of “Africa” and “Greensleeves” as well as a previously unissued recording of “The Damned Don’t Cry.”

The Amazing Bud Powell – Time Waits

null

One of jazz history’s greatest pianists, Bud Powell suffered from mental illness and heavy medication that often interfered with his playing. When he recorded this session in 1957, at age 33, his most incandescent inventions were already behind him, but what remained was a pianist of extraordinary depth, capable of the deepest blues and a rhythmic incisiveness like Thelonious Monk’s. And he was still a composer of first-rate bop lines, like “John’s Abbey” and “Time Waits,” the latter a reference to his once blazing “Tempus Fugue-it.” The rhythm section of bassist Sam Jones and drummer Philly Joe Jones is absolutely masterful at the slow and medium tempos that Powell had come to favor, with Jones often prodding the pianist into exuberance. This is the finest of Powell’s later recordings, revealing a bop pianist who paled only in comparison with his former self.

Lou Donaldson – The Midnight Creeper

null

As he delved deeper into commercial soul-jazz and jazz-funk, Lou Donaldson became better at it. While lacking the bite of his hard bop improvisations or the hard-swinging funk of Alligator Bogaloo, Midnight Creeper succeeds where its predecessor, Mr. Shing-A-Ling failed: it offers a thoroughly enjoyable set of grooving, funky soul-jazz. The five songs — including two originals by Donaldson and one each by Lonnie Smith (who also plays organ on the record), Teddy Vann, and Harold Ousley — aren’t particularly distinguished, but the vibe is important, not the material. And the band — Donaldson, Smith, trumpeter Blue Mitchell, guitarist George Benson, and drummer Leo Morris — strikes the right note, turning in a fluid, friendly collection of bluesy funk vamps. Donaldson could frequently sound stilted on his commercial soul-jazz dates, but that’s not the case with Midnight Creeper. He rarely was quite as loose on his late-’60s/early-’70s records as he is here, and that’s what makes Midnight Creeper a keeper.

Hank Mobley – A Caddy For Daddy

null

Like many of Hank Mobley’s mid-’60s Blue Note dates, A Caddy For Daddy features Lee Morgan, Billy Higgins, and an attempt to recapture the funky backbeat of Morgan’s hit “The Sidewinder.” What’s different here is that Mobley leads a quintet with the addition of the fabulous Curtis Fuller on trombone, Coltrane’s pianist McCoy Tyner, and veteran bassist Bob Cranshaw rounding out the group. The vibe is bluesy and swinging, like most Mobley dates, with plenty of choice hard-bop moments from the assembled crew.

The “Sidewinder” of this disc is the title track, which once again finds Higgins easing into a quasi-Latin funk under a gutbucket melody by the horns. Beyond this opening resides the meat of the session. The dark, bouncing waltz “The Morning After” is a curiously flighty groove with crisp ensemble work by the horns and tasty solos all around. The comically titled swinger “Venus Di Mildew” follows and continues the laid-back groove that permeates the session. The most driving cut is the punchy “Ace Deuce Trey,” an intricate piece that offers some of Mobley’s best soloing of the date. Finally, the bopping “3rd Time Around,” an uptempo burner, closes the set with a frenzy.

Personnel: Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); McCoy Tyner (piano); Bob Cranshaw (bass); Billy Higgins (drums).
