The Colmans’ eponymous debut LP is at once a tribute to the brothers’ heroes, such as Dizzy Gillespie (on the track “Mr. D.G.”) Freddie Hubbard and Francy Bolland, but isn’t all about the dance floor – tracks such as the eerily cinematic “The Chief”, the evocative “On A Better Day”, and the luscious “Some Other Wonder” (featuring Sara again) are far more restrained but equally inviting pieces. With huge support from Gilles Peterson on Radio 1, Peter Young on Jazz FM and many more following in their wake, we think you’ll agree that they really are something for us to blow our trumpet about!! Skalpel are nu jazz DJs and musicians, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło, from Wrocław in Poland. Their musical style is a distinctive blend of hip hop beats, laced with samples lifted from the rich seam of Polish jazz records of the 1960s and 1970s. In 2000, after interviewing DJ Vadim for a Polish hip hop magazine, Skalpel discussed samples, obscure breaks and the Polish music scene with him. That led to a combined tour with Skalpel and Vadim’s live band, The Russian Percussion, during which they performed with four turntables. Later that year, Skalpel released a demo CD entitled “Polish Jazz”, which gained praise in from the Polish music press.

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British jazz and electronic outfit, created in the late 1990s by Jason Swinscoe. The band is signed to Ninja Tune independent record label. In addition to Swinscoe, the band includes PC (former DJ Food member Patrick Carpenter) on turntables, Luke Flowers (drums), Tom Chant (Saxophone), Nick Ramm (piano), Stuart McCallum (guitar) and Phil France (double bass). Former members include Jamie Coleman (trumpet), T. Daniel Howard (drums), Federico Ughi (drums) and Alex James (piano). The most recent addition to the band is Mancunian guitarist Stuart McCallum.
The Cinematic Orchestra’s sound, in both live and studio contexts, employs a live band which improvises along with a turntablist and electronic elements such as samples provided by Swinscoe. In their studio releases Swinscoe will often remix the live source material to produce a combination of live jazz improvisation with electronica, such that it is difficult to tell where the improvisation ends and the production begins.

Into the Wind marries a unique blend of ancient tradition with studio trickery. Eschewing all notions of superficial “Asian-fusion,” this uplifting, genre-bending sound clash, recalls the afro centric harping of Dorothy Ashby and hypnotic spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane. With Lee adding equal doses of hip hop, electric jazz, and soul sensibility to the backing tracks, the captivating sound of Bei Bei’s Guzheng (a 2000 year old Chinese string instrument) comes alive on peaceful mellow joints as much as it does on Kung-Fu flavored funk tunes.

Ben Lamdin’s creations range from heavy funk, to hip-hop based beats mixed with dusty old jazz, obscuro funk and psych bits and pieces.
Nostalgia 77 aka Ben Lamdin first burst onto the scene with his heavy, new funk based sound in 2002. In 2004 he moved away from the distinctive raw funk of his previous singles and he branched out to explore a more downtempo and jazz infused style. Nostalgia’s sound moved to hip-hop based beats fused with dusty old jazz; obscuro funk and psych bits and pieces, repolishing and rearranging them for modern day headphone junkies.
The success of this composition lead Ben to a style he describes as “a combination of soul and jazz composition with computer based production techniques”. Coming from producing hip hop style beats he had always heard snippets of jazz tracks he loved, so the fuller musical expression of actually making his own jazz music was inevitable.
His cover version of Seven Nation Army with Alice Russell has also helped bring his “Jazz Jihad” mission to a wider audience!
Aiming for an edgy sound whilst continuing to search for a more personal expression, Nostalgia 77’s influences include free and spiritual jazz as well as 60’s funk and soul and Afro sounds.
